Somerset County’s September 15, 2026, upset tax sale was scheduled to offer nearly 700 properties tied to unpaid 2023 and 2024 county real-estate taxes. The available reporting does not confirm that the auction generated $283,000, so that figure should be treated as unverified—not as a final sale result.

What is known about the 2026 sale

The Daily American reported on August 17, 2026, that nearly 700 properties were scheduled for public sale on September 15 because of unpaid 2023 and 2024 county real-estate taxes. Its report named Tax Claim Bureau Director Natasha Knopsnyder. The Daily American’s pre-sale report described the planned auction; it did not provide a post-sale accounting.

As a result, the reported $283,000 proceeds figure cannot be verified from the available sources. They also do not establish how many properties sold or how any proceeds total was calculated. Somerset County’s Tax Claim Bureau page explains the bureau’s role and contact details, but does not report the auction outcome.

If your property was listed

The pre-sale article said owners had until September 14, 2026, to pay the listed amount or contact the bureau to arrange payment. Knopsnyder urged owners to call, saying, “Don’t be afraid to call and talk to us,” and that the bureau wanted to help people stay in their homes rather than sell their property.

  1. Check the parcel and amount against the county’s current information; a news report is not a substitute for confirming your account directly.
  2. Call the Tax Claim Bureau at (814) 445-1550 to ask about the balance, payment status, or available arrangements. The county lists office hours as 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  3. Confirm acceptable payment methods and any deadlines with the bureau before sending payment. The county says it accepts certified funds and personal checks with approval, and explicitly states that it accepts no cash.

The September 14 deadline was reported before the scheduled 2026 sale; it should not be read as a current or continuing payment deadline.

What an upset sale means for buyers

Somerset County says its Tax Claim Bureau collects delinquent real-estate taxes referred by local tax collectors and conducts an annual upset sale. A third-party 2026 guide describes the planned event as an in-person courthouse auction with advance bidder registration, but prospective bidders should confirm current sale procedures and parcel availability with the county rather than relying on a guide. Tax Sale Atlas’s Somerset County guide also cautions that liens and other recorded obligations may survive an upset sale. Buyers should verify title, outstanding obligations, payment deadlines, and total costs directly with the bureau and relevant public records before bidding.
