If you received an email about the Amazon return-policy settlement, verify it by independently visiting ReturnSettlement.com, the court-authorized settlement website. The proposed settlement covers certain U.S. Amazon physical-product return and refund problems—not the separate Amazon Prime subscription case. Some class members are slated for automatic payment; others must file a claim by December 1, 2026. The settlement is not final, and no payment will be made unless it is approved and becomes final.

What is the Amazon returns settlement?

The case, In re: Amazon Return Policy Litigation, No. 2:23-cv-01372-JNW, is pending in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington. Plaintiffs alleged problems with Amazon’s return and refund practices. Amazon denies wrongdoing, and the court has not found that Amazon is liable. The proposed $309.5 million settlement is separate from the FTC’s Amazon Prime subscription refund settlement.

Amazon would pay $309.5 million into a non-reversionary common fund under the 2026 settlement agreement. The fund also covers administration, attorneys’ fees, costs, and service awards, subject to court approval. The agreement allocates 92.7% of the net settlement fund to Subclass A and 7.3% to eligible Subclass B claimants. Those allocations do not establish an individual payment amount.

The agreement discusses approximately $81 million in Subclass A transaction values estimated eligible for full refunds from the fund; this is transaction value, not a promised payout. It also describes approximately $604 million in Subclass A transaction values for which Amazon had already issued approximately $570 million in refunds, with members also to receive interest payments. For Subclass B, Amazon estimated a potential claim pool of approximately $400 million, while stating that the estimate is descriptive and does not admit any individual claim is valid. As of December 1, 2025, the agreement says approximately $570 million in refunds had been issued and approximately $34 million remained unpaid. None of these figures guarantees a personal award.

How to check whether a notice is legitimate

The settlement website says it is authorized by the court. Rather than trusting an email’s sender name or link alone, type ReturnSettlement.com into your browser and review the notice and FAQs there. The court-authorized notice lists the administrator at [email protected] and 1-888-553-4246. Contact the administrator through those details if you want to ask whether a notice relates to the settlement. The official materials also point readers to “Your Transactions” on Amazon.com to review return and refund status.

The filed notice plan provides for email to the last-known address in the class data. If delivery fails, the administrator will try an alternate email associated with the Amazon account when one is available; the plan also calls for at least three reminder emails. Those procedures do not prove that any particular message is genuine or that its recipient qualifies.

Who may be included in the settlement?

The notice describes a settlement class of people who initiated a return or requested a refund for a physical product purchased and, according to Amazon’s records, received in the United States through Amazon.com between September 5, 2017, and February 12, 2026, and who allegedly did not receive the refund, received an untimely or incorrect refund, or were later incorrectly charged again for the returned product.

The notice lists exclusions, including purchases from Amazon affiliates and subsidiaries, except when the purchase was on Amazon.com and the return was handled through Amazon fulfillment channels. If you are unsure whether you or a transaction qualifies, check the official notice or contact the administrator; an email alone does not establish eligibility.

Which subclass applies, and do you need to file?

Group What the notice says to do Payment process
Subclass A No claim form is required. Select a preferred payment method by 105 days after the court grants final approval. Payment is intended to be automatic, subject to the settlement becoming final.
Subclass B Submit an eligible claim online or by mail by December 1, 2026. A mailed claim must be postmarked by that date. A claim form is required to receive payment.

A person may have transactions in both subclasses and may receive both amounts together. The notice describes supporting documentation and a claim-review process. Follow the form’s instructions and keep your own transaction and return records; no specific award or payment date is guaranteed. Payments are issued only after approval and finality, and appeals may affect timing.

For a mailed Subclass B claim, the notice gives this address: Amazon Return Policy Litigation, Attn: Claim Forms, PO Box 10, East Brunswick, NJ 08816-9998.

Key dates and the approval hearing

  • December 1, 2026: Claim, exclusion, and objection deadline. A mailed claim must be postmarked by this date.
  • March 16, 2027, at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time: Final approval hearing, subject to change.

Confirm current dates and instructions on the official settlement website. The court still has to decide whether to approve the proposal; the scheduled hearing is not proof that approval has been granted.

Your options—and what each one means

Choice Payment and effort Effect on released claims
Stay in the settlement Subclass A payment is intended to be automatic; Subclass B members must file an eligible claim. If the settlement becomes final, claims covered by the settlement are released.
Opt out Send a written exclusion request by December 1, 2026; you give up settlement benefits. Preserves the ability to pursue released claims independently.
Object Tell the court why you oppose approval by December 1, 2026. Objecting does not replace a Subclass B claim. You remain in the settlement and bound by it if it is approved.
Do nothing The administrator will attempt direct payment for Subclass A. Subclass B members receive no settlement payment without an eligible claim. If you remain in the class and the settlement becomes final, you may give up rights to sue over released claims.

Opting out and objecting are different: an objection asks the court not to approve the deal but does not remove you from it. These choices can affect legal rights. Read the court-authorized notice and consult your own attorney about personal legal questions; this article does not recommend a particular choice.

What Amazon has agreed to change if the settlement takes effect

The notice describes operational commitments for return and refund handling. They include monitoring processing timelines; troubleshooting technical problems that block refunds or cause erroneous repeat charges; automatically retrying approved refunds that remain incomplete after 30 days because of payment-processing issues, with manual reprocessing when needed; messaging customers when refunds are approved or denied; and taking reasonable steps on certain returns that have not completed grading after 90 days.

The measures have different durations—generally 12, 18, or 24 months after the settlement’s effective date—and are subject to stated operational, fraud, and legal exceptions. They are proposed settlement commitments, not a finding that Amazon violated the law.
