Social Security wages are the portion of your pay subject to Social Security tax. Your employer generally reports them in box 3 of Form W-2, before payroll deductions. For 2026, the Social Security wage base is $184,500: earnings above that annual limit are not subject to Social Security tax under the general rule.
What counts as Social Security wages?
Box 3 reports wages subject to employee Social Security tax. It is a tax-reporting figure, not your take-home pay and not necessarily the same as your gross pay. The amount is generally determined before payroll deductions, and Social Security tips are reported separately in box 7.
Whether a particular payment is treated as wages can depend on the payment, worker status, retirement plan, and applicable exceptions. The general W-2 definition does not settle every specialized situation.
How the 2026 Social Security wage base works
The Social Security Administration sets an annual maximum amount of earnings subject to Social Security tax. For 2026, that wage base is $184,500, according to the Social Security Administration’s Contribution and Benefit Base information and its taxable earnings FAQ. It is a year-specific limit, not a permanent threshold.

The IRS says the total of W-2 boxes 3 and 7 cannot exceed $184,500 for 2026. This matters because tips in box 7 count toward the same Social Security wage base as wages in box 3.
For 2026, the employee Social Security tax rate is 6.2%, and the employer pays another 6.2% on covered wages up to the wage base. At the full $184,500 base, the general maximum employee withholding is $11,439 (6.2% of $184,500). These figures are for 2026; verify the applicable limit and rates for a different tax year.

How W-2 boxes 1, 3, 4, 5, and 7 differ
| W-2 box | What it reports | Why it may differ |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Wages, tips, and other compensation for federal income-tax reporting | Certain elective retirement-plan deferrals may be excluded from box 1 even though they remain subject to Social Security and Medicare taxes. |
| 3 | Wages subject to Social Security tax | Subject to the annual Social Security wage base; Social Security tips are reported separately in box 7. |
| 4 | Employee Social Security tax withheld | For 2026, the general maximum is $11,439, corresponding to the 6.2% employee rate applied to the $184,500 wage base. |
| 5 | Medicare wages and tips | Medicare wages have no wage base limit, so box 5 can exceed box 3. |
| 7 | Social Security tips reported by the employee | Added to box 3 when checking whether the Social Security wage base has been reached. |
Why box 1 and box 3 can be different
Box 1 and box 3 serve different tax purposes, so they do not have to match. For example, certain elective deferrals to retirement plans are not included in box 1 but remain subject to Social Security and Medicare taxes and are reported in box 3. The IRS describes these rules in its Topic no. 401, Wages and salaries and the W-2 instructions.
Look at the plan and payroll treatment for the specific amount if the difference is unexpected; the boxes alone do not identify every compensation item or explain every exception.

Why box 5 can be higher than box 3
Social Security tax stops applying to covered wages after the annual wage base is reached, but Medicare tax has no wage base limit. For 2026, the employee and employer Medicare tax rates are generally 1.45% each, with no annual wage cap for that tax. As a result, Medicare wages in box 5 can continue to rise even after Social Security wages in box 3 reach their limit.
The IRS’s 2026 W-2 instructions illustrate this with $199,750 in wages: box 3 shows $184,500, while box 5 shows $199,750. This is an example of how the two tax bases differ, not a rule that every worker’s boxes will have those amounts.

How to check a Social Security wage amount
- Check the tax year. The wage base changes over time; the 2026 limit is $184,500.
- Compare boxes 3 and 7. Together, they are subject to the Social Security wage-base maximum.
- Compare boxes 1, 3, and 5 by tax purpose. Box 1 is for federal income-tax wages, box 3 for Social Security wages, and box 5 for Medicare wages, so differences can be legitimate.
- Review box 4 against the applicable wage base and rate. Under the general 2026 rule, employee Social Security withholding is 6.2% of covered wages up to $184,500, or at most $11,439.
- Ask payroll about an unexplained discrepancy. If the figures do not make sense after accounting for the wage base and differing tax rules, request an explanation of how the payment was classified and reported.
Additional Medicare Tax is separate
The 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax is not part of Social Security tax and does not change the Social Security wage base. For 2026, employers generally withhold it on wages they pay to an employee above $200,000. That withholding threshold is based on wages from one employer; an employee’s final tax liability is determined under the applicable tax rules and may differ from the amount withheld.
