Saturday Night Live’s “Trump Tariff Cold Open” puts Donald Trump’s tariffs and their impact on the stock market at the center of a political parody. James Austin Johnson plays Trump in the clip, published April 5, 2025. The sketch’s framing is satire, not an independent measure of market performance.
What happens in the SNL cold open?
The official clip is titled “Trump Tariff Cold Open – SNL.” SNL describes it as a speech in which President Donald Trump, played by James Austin Johnson, addresses his tariffs and their impact on the stock market. The Guardian’s review of the episode reports a “MAGDA” gag, short for “Make America Great Depression again”; that is a reported joke, not a complete transcript of the sketch.

When did it air, and what was the context?
The cold open was part of the April 5, 2025, episode hosted by Jack Black. NBC lists it as Season 50, Episode 17, with the episode and clip information. The episode followed the White House’s April 2 publication of a fact sheet on the administration’s tariff policy by three days. That document sets out the administration’s stated policy and rationale; it does not establish how markets performed.

No. The clip’s description says the sketch addresses tariffs and their stock-market impact, and its jokes use that subject for satire. A comedy sketch is not market data or evidence that a particular policy caused a particular market move. The sources cited here do not establish a specific index decline, dollar loss, or comparative performance figure, so none should be inferred from the sketch or quoted as its factual finding.
For a verified market-performance claim, consult a source that reports the relevant index or measure, dates, and comparison directly. Keep that evidence separate from the White House’s policy announcement and from SNL’s satirical portrayal. The Guardian’s April 6 review offers a secondary description of the cold open and its MAGDA joke, rather than a full transcript.
