Slate Auto’s announced Slate Truck starts as a two-seat electric pickup and can be configured as a five-seat SUV. Slate lists a $24,950 starting price for the pickup, before a separate $1,450 destination charge, taxes, fees, and optional equipment. The SUV forms start at $29,950, according to the company’s June 24, 2026 announcement. The vehicle remains preproduction: its projected 205-mile pickup range is not an official EPA estimate, and Slate says specifications may change.

What Slate is offering

Slate describes its vehicle as a simple, customizable electric platform rather than a conventional pickup with a fixed trim lineup. Every vehicle starts as a two-seat pickup, and buyers may choose an SUV configuration at delivery or convert it later. Slate’s FAQ names three five-seat forms: Squareback, Fastback, and Open Air. Slate’s FAQ describes the Squareback as a traditional SUV shape, the Fastback as sportier, and Open Air as a rear bench without a hardtop or rear windows.

Those are Slate’s descriptions of the designs, not independent assessments of comfort, cargo capacity, or performance. The core financial question is whether the lower announced entry price fits your needs once destination, the SUV body configuration, and any desired accessories are included.

What the announced prices include—and leave out

Slate’s current FAQ lists the Blank Slate pickup at $24,950 and a $300 preorder deposit credited toward the purchase price. The company lists destination separately at $1,450. Its June 24, 2026 release says the Squareback and Fastback SUVs start at $29,950; that is a starting price, not a promise that every customization is included. Slate’s FAQ and June 24, 2026 release provide those figures.

Blank Slate pickup $24,950 Current listed starting price; Slate’s FAQ says the $300 preorder deposit is credited toward the purchase price.
Destination $1,450 Listed separately from the pickup’s base price.
Squareback or Fastback SUV Starts at $29,950 Starting price stated in Slate’s June 24, 2026 release; customization may add cost.
Taxes, title, license, registration, government fees, documentation, optional equipment Not included in the base price Slate’s specification sheet says these may add to the total.

For a personal-finance comparison, treat the advertised price as a starting point, not an out-the-door number. The pickup and SUV starting prices are not directly interchangeable: the SUV configuration costs more before optional accessories, and the final purchase total depends on charges and choices. Slate’s June 24, 2026 specification sheet says specifications and pricing-related details may change.

How the pickup-to-SUV choice changes utility

The two-seat pickup and five-seat SUV share the basic platform, but the published utility estimates differ. Slate’s preproduction specification sheet lists lower maximum payload and towing figures for the SUV than for the pickup. These are manufacturer estimates, not independently verified ratings.

Configuration Seats Maximum payload Maximum towing
Pickup 2 Up to 1,550 lb Up to 2,000 lb
SUV 5 Up to 1,263 lb Up to 1,824 lb

Slate lists those maxima in its June 24, 2026 specification sheet. It does not establish here how a specific accessory combination, passenger load, or real-world use would affect those figures. If you regularly carry passengers, compare the SUV’s seating with its lower listed payload and towing capacities; if hauling or towing is the priority, the pickup’s announced numbers are higher.

Range, charging, and what remains unproven

Slate currently projects 205 miles of range for the pickup. That number is an estimate that approximates the EPA test cycle, not an official EPA estimated range. Slate’s specification sheet identifies the truck as preproduction and says specifications may change. No real-world range or ownership testing is established in the company materials cited here.

The same sheet lists a single rear-wheel-drive motor, a 65 kWh battery pack (63 kWh usable), 135 kW output, and NACS charging. Slate estimates a 20–80% DC charge in 30 minutes using 120 kW charging, and a 20–100% Level 2 AC charge in four hours at 11 kW. Those are company charging estimates under stated charging-power conditions, not guaranteed times in every situation. Battery temperature, charger output, and other conditions can affect actual charging.

Slate says the vehicle includes a charging cable and J1772 adapter, can charge from a 120V household outlet, and can use 240V outlets with the included cable. It also names Treehouse as a partner for home charging installation. For budgeting, consider whether you can charge at home and whether your routine trips fit comfortably within a range estimate that has not yet been confirmed by an EPA rating or real-world testing. Slate’s specification sheet and FAQ outline these details.

“Low-tech” mostly means bringing your own infotainment

Slate says there is no built-in infotainment system. Instead, the cabin is designed around mounting and charging a phone; Slate says connected phones can run apps, rather than relying on Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Its FAQ also describes a bracket for a large tablet, a holder for a portable Bluetooth speaker, and optional Slate audio accessories.

This approach may reduce built-in electronics, but it shifts part of the experience—and potentially some spending—to the owner’s phone and chosen audio setup. Buyers who expect an integrated touchscreen and factory infotainment should account for that difference before comparing the vehicle with more conventionally equipped cars. Slate also says heating and air conditioning use analog controls.

“Low-tech” does not mean Slate says the vehicle lacks safety equipment. The company lists traction control, electronic stability control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, airbags, a backup camera, pedestrian identification, and automatic high beams. Slate says it is designing the vehicle to achieve a five-star US NCAP crash rating; that is a design target, not a published crash-test result. Slate’s FAQ lists the cabin and safety details.

Accessories, warranty, and ownership costs to verify

Slate says its marketplace will offer more than 200 accessories, with over 80% priced below $500, and more than 100 wrap colors at launch. These are company claims in its June 24, 2026 release; accessory availability and prices may change. The modular approach lets buyers add features over time, but the total cost of a customized vehicle can exceed the base price.

Slate states a 10-year/110,000-mile battery and powertrain warranty, a 4-year/50,000-mile standard limited vehicle warranty, and four years/50,000 miles of roadside assistance. The company says it plans to use RepairPal-certified shops for service and accessory installation. Warranty terms and service arrangements should be confirmed in the purchase documents that apply to a specific order.

Preorders and timing are still company projections

Slate says first deliveries are slated for late 2026. Its June 24, 2026 release reported more than 180,000 reservation holders; that is a reservation count, not completed sales, firm orders, or deliveries. Because the vehicle is preproduction, price, specifications, configurations, timing, and availability can change.

The launch story has also evolved. Slate’s April 24, 2025 announcement projected a starting price under $20,000 after federal incentives, 150 miles of standard range, and a 240-mile estimate with an accessory battery. The company’s June 24, 2026 materials instead list a $24,950 pickup starting price and a projected 205-mile range. The earlier figures are historical projections, not the current announced figures. See Slate’s June 2026 release and April 2025 announcement.

Who should watch Slate—and what to compare

Slate may be worth tracking if you want an electric vehicle that can be configured for either two-seat pickup use or five-seat SUV use, and you are comfortable with a phone-based cabin and a preproduction vehicle’s uncertainty. It is harder to evaluate as a settled purchase today because the key figures are company-announced estimates and first deliveries are not yet established as completed.

  • Compare the pickup’s lower entry price with the SUV’s higher starting price and your actual passenger needs.
  • Budget for destination, taxes, fees, and any conversion or accessory costs rather than relying on the base figure alone.
  • Check whether the estimated range and home-charging setup suit your regular driving.
  • Wait for final specifications, purchase documents, and independent range and safety results before treating estimates or targets as verified outcomes.
