SKY WTR was reported in July 2024 as a planned U.S. canned-water product made with water produced by SOURCE Global’s solar-powered Hydropanels. The reports expected it to reach U.S. stores later that year, but its current retail availability has not been verified. The idea behind the can is more than a new beverage: SOURCE presented it as a way to introduce people to making water from moisture in the air.
What is SKY WTR?
SKY WTR is canned drinking water associated with SOURCE Global, the company behind Hydropanel systems. July 2024 reports described a planned U.S. introduction and said the water would be produced at a Florida installation using those panels. The product was presented as a demonstration of water-from-air technology, rather than simply as a new bottled-water brand. Tomorrow’s World Today reported on the plan on July 24, 2024, and Interesting Engineering covered it on July 2, 2024.
Those stories described aluminum cans and said the packaging was chosen for recyclability. That stated rationale does not, by itself, establish the product’s overall environmental impact: a full comparison would also need to account for production, transport, recycling rates, and alternatives.
How does a Hydropanel make water from air?
In the process described in the 2024 coverage, fans draw moisture-bearing air through a material that absorbs water vapor. Solar energy helps release the captured moisture as a concentrated stream; the panel then condenses it and collects the water. The reports say the collected water is mineralized and ozonated.

This is the reported process, not an independent engineering assessment or water-quality test. SOURCE’s Hydropanels product page describes the system as producing water from air and sunlight; performance and benefit claims on a company page should be understood as vendor claims.
What production figures were reported?
The 2024 reports attributed the following figures to SOURCE. They are reported figures, not independently measured results in this article.
Rank #2
- smartwater is h2o crafted through a vapor distillation process inspired by the clouds, for a taste that is always crisp and pure
- purified water cans with a perfectly tailored pH to support your active lifestyle
- added electrolytes, like potassium, magnesium and calcium, to enhance the flavor
- a crisp, pure taste makes smartwater a hydration choice for every occasion
- 8 pack of 12 fl oz cans of smartwater water
| Reported figure | What it describes | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 3 liters per panel per day | Hydropanel output | A reported maximum, not a guaranteed daily yield in every climate or operating condition. |
| 3,000 liters per day | A Florida installation associated with the SKY WTR effort | Reported in 2024 coverage; the site’s output has not been independently measured here. |
| Installations in 56 countries | Reported geographic deployment of Hydropanels | A SOURCE figure reported in 2024, not a currently verified country count. |
Both Tomorrow’s World Today and Interesting Engineering reported the output figures in 2024. Actual production depends on conditions; the cited maximum should not be read as a promise of what any panel will produce at a particular site.
Was SKY WTR actually launched in U.S. stores?
The available reports establish a plan, not a confirmed present-day launch. In July 2024, coverage said the product was expected in U.S. stores later that year. That announcement does not confirm that the rollout happened, identify current retailers, or establish where consumers can buy it now. New Scientist’s July 2024 LinkedIn post also noted the launch plan but did not provide detailed technical or availability information.

- CANNED WATER IN ECO-FRIENDLY ALUMINUM, NOT PLASTIC - Open Water uses sustainable packaging made of 100% recyclable BPA-free aluminum. Our 12 ounce aluminum cans get recycled more often than any other beverage container material including plastic, glass, and even cartons. Aluminum is also infinitely recyclable, which means it can be recycled over and over without losing quality or volume.
- CONVENIENT AND SUSTAINABLE - Canned Water! You know what they say... Great things come in small packages. Well, now our deliciously fresh ultra-purified water is available in a compact little can that's easy to throw in a backpack, cooler, or lunchbox. Made and adventure-tested right here in the U.S.
- CLEAN, PURE TASTE - Our ultra-purified canned water has a balanced pH and goes through a multi-step purification system. We then add plenty of electrolytes for a clean, balanced taste.
- CLIMATE NEUTRAL CERTIFIED - We are the first bottled water company to go Climate Neutral That means that we are measuring, reducing, and offsetting all of the carbon emissions that we create as a company, from powering our team’s computers to producing our bottles and cans. Additionally, we are a 1% for the Planet member with a portion of each sale going to ocean conservation.
- LONG TERM EMERGENCY STORAGE - Open Water is the perfect option for long term storage as emergency water when stored in a dry environment with ambient temperatures (above 35 degrees and below 90 degrees Fahrenheit).
Readers looking to purchase SKY WTR should verify current availability directly with the company or a retailer before relying on the 2024 announcement.

The can and the panel system serve different purposes. SKY WTR was described as a consumer product intended to draw attention to the technology. Hydropanels are the underlying equipment, with reported potential uses in settings such as homes, schools, hotels, and remote worksites. Those applications are not the same as buying a can, and the reports do not provide enough information to compare Hydropanels with other water sources on cost or lifecycle impact.

For a household, organization, or site assessing a water system, useful questions include:
- How much water does the system produce under the local climate and expected operating conditions?
- What treatment and ongoing water-quality testing are provided, and by whom?
- What are the installation, operating, and maintenance costs?
- How does its energy use and output compare with the site’s existing water supply?
The 2024 coverage does not establish answers to those questions for a particular installation. A company’s product information can describe its system, but a buyer still needs site-specific performance, cost, and water-quality details.
