Sky Dayton’s exact net worth is not publicly verifiable. As of August 18, 2026, the clearest current public estimate is GuruFocus’s figure of at least $53 million in modeled public-company holdings, while Celebrity Net Worth publishes a much higher $300 million estimate without enough disclosed detail to confirm it. The $53 million figure is not a complete balance sheet, and the $300 million figure should be treated as unverified.
Sky Dayton’s estimated net worth
Published figures differ because they do not measure the same thing. One is a holdings calculation with an important data-age caveat; another is a broad media estimate whose underlying assets are not itemized.

| Figure | Date | What it represents | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| At least $53 million | July 20, 2026 | GuruFocus’s estimate based principally on reported Boingo Wireless and EarthLink holdings | A partial, modeled holdings figure. GuruFocus says it assumes Dayton made no transactions after August 28, 2013, so it is not a verified current total. |
| $300 million | Celebrity Net Worth page published about three years before the August 2026 research date | Editorial net-worth estimate | Unverified: the page does not provide enough asset-by-asset evidence to establish the amount. |
| $139 million | June 14, 1999 | Forbes estimate during the dot-com boom | Historical context only, not a current valuation. |
GuruFocus’s calculation is the most concrete recent public figure identified, but its own qualification makes it unsuitable as a precise 2026 net-worth total. Celebrity Net Worth’s larger number may be repeated online, but without a transparent breakdown it cannot be independently checked. Forbes’s 1999 estimate is nearly three decades old and cannot establish what Dayton owns today.

What the $53 million estimate counts
GuruFocus attributes approximately $48 million to about 3,420,249 Boingo Wireless shares and more than $5 million to about 972,160 EarthLink Holdings shares, as of July 20, 2026. Those are reported or modeled holdings, not proof that Dayton still owns the shares in those amounts. GuruFocus says its calculation assumes no transactions after August 28, 2013, so later sales, transfers, or other changes may not be reflected.
Historical SEC filings do show Dayton’s connection to Boingo ownership. A 2011 filing identifies him in relation to the company’s public offering, and a 2013 Form 4 records a reportable transaction. These filings establish historical reporting, not his full present-day portfolio or balance sheet. See the 2011 Boingo filing and 2013 Boingo Form 4.
How Sky Dayton built his wealth
EarthLink
Dayton founded EarthLink in 1994. His official website says he began with approximately $100,000 and describes his net worth before the company’s growth as less than $100,000. In a 2002 Forbes account, EarthLink was described as having reached a billion-dollar market capitalization. That company valuation gives context for its scale, but it is not Dayton’s personal proceeds or a measure of his wealth today. Sources: Dayton’s official website and Forbes (2002).
eCompanies and Boingo Wireless
Dayton co-founded eCompanies, an incubator and venture fund, with Jake Winebaum. He founded Boingo Wireless in 2001 to aggregate Wi-Fi networks. Boingo later went public in 2011, giving investors a public-market route to hold or sell shares; the existence of that route does not establish what Dayton retained or realized. Dayton’s company history and investment record are summarized in his Craft Ventures biography.
Venture investments and company exits
Craft Ventures lists Dayton’s involvement with companies including JAMDAT Mobile, LowerMyBills, Business.com, Helio, Ring, Swarm, and Joby Aviation, among others. Some businesses were acquired for substantial sums, but transaction prices belong to the companies or their shareholders collectively. Without Dayton’s ownership stake, dilution, sale timing, taxes, and other terms, a company’s exit price cannot be converted into his personal earnings.
Major exits are not personal net-worth figures
The transactions below show the scale of companies associated with Dayton, not the amount he personally received. The cited company biography does not disclose his proceeds from each deal.
Rank #4
| Company | Reported transaction or outcome | What it does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| JAMDAT Mobile | Electronic Arts acquired it in 2005 for approximately $680 million. | Company-level acquisition value; Dayton’s personal proceeds are not established. |
| LowerMyBills | Experian acquired it in 2005 for approximately $380 million. | Company-level acquisition value; not a personal payout figure. |
| Business.com | Reportedly sold to RH Donnelly in 2007 for approximately $345 million. | Reported company sale price; Dayton’s share is not stated. |
| Helio | Acquired by Virgin Mobile USA in 2008. | The cited biography does not state a transaction value or Dayton’s proceeds. |
| Ring | Amazon acquired it in 2018 for approximately $1 billion. | Company-level acquisition value; Dayton’s personal return is not stated. |
| Swarm | Acquired by SpaceX in 2021. | The cited biography does not state a transaction value or Dayton’s proceeds. |
Craft Ventures says companies Dayton founded or helped build reached an aggregate market value exceeding $20 billion. That is a company-level measure, not an estimate of Dayton’s personal net worth. Source for the company list, transactions, and aggregate-value claim: Craft Ventures.
Why no public source can verify his total wealth
A person’s net worth is assets minus liabilities, but public records usually reveal only fragments of a private individual’s finances. Public-company shares may appear in filings; other components can be difficult or impossible to value from outside.
Best Value
- Used Book in Good Condition
- Private-company equity and venture investments: Stakes may be illiquid and valued using a funding round rather than a completed sale.
- Trusts and family entities: Public records may not make beneficial ownership or control straightforward.
- Real estate, cash, and debt: These can materially change a balance sheet but may not be publicly itemized.
- Taxes and charitable transfers: Gross asset values do not account for tax liabilities or gifts.
- Sales, dilution, and transfers: A historical share count can become outdated as a person sells, receives, or transfers shares.
Even public holdings need a date, share count, price, and ownership context to support a valuation. GuruFocus’s stale-transaction assumption is especially important: the page’s 2026 estimate date does not mean every underlying ownership record is current through 2026.
How to judge a net-worth estimate
Before treating a headline figure as a fact, check whether the source discloses:
- the valuation date and the assets included;
- share counts and market prices, plus whether holdings are direct, indirect, or trust-held;
- how it values private investments;
- whether it deducts debt, taxes, and charitable transfers; and
- whether the result is a lower bound, a range, or a point estimate supported by current filings.
A company’s sale price, market capitalization, or cumulative portfolio value can explain how an entrepreneur built wealth, but none alone establishes the entrepreneur’s net worth. For Dayton, the public evidence supports a cautious distinction: a modeled public-holdings figure of at least $53 million and a separate, unverified $300 million media estimate—not a confirmed total.
