Silver First Crossed $78 in December 2025—What Drove the Surge and What Happened Next

Silver’s first reported move above $78 came on December 26, 2025. Here’s what contemporary coverage said was behind it, how 2025 market data fit, and why later price swings matter.

Silver first crossed $78 an ounce on Friday, December 26, 2025, when Forbes reported a COMEX price of about $78.65. That was a dated milestone, not a current quote: no live silver price for October 8, 2026 is verified here. The rally reflected several reported supports, while the metal’s subsequent swings show why a supply deficit or a record price alone cannot establish where it will go next.

What happened when silver neared $78?

Forbes reported that silver crossed $78 an ounce for the first time on Friday, December 26, 2025, with a price around $78.65 attributed to COMEX. The figure describes that trading-day event; it should not be read as silver’s price today. A current quote requires a live benchmark or exchange source and timestamp.

In the same report, UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo said: “Prospect of lower U.S. interest rates is still supporting demand for gold and silver, lifting both metals to new record highs.” The remark captures one explanation offered at the time, not a finding that rates alone caused the move. Forbes’ December 26, 2025 coverage also pointed to tariff uncertainty, AI data-center-related demand, constrained supply, and investor interest as possible contributors.

Why was silver surging?

The explanations in contemporary coverage span monetary policy, industrial use, supply conditions, and investment demand. They can help explain why buyers were active, but they are contributing factors reported by Forbes—not proof of a single cause or a reliable forecast.

  • Interest-rate expectations: Expectations of lower U.S. rates were described as supportive for precious metals. Lower rates can make assets that do not pay interest relatively more attractive, but that relationship does not guarantee a particular price move.
  • Tariff and policy uncertainty: Forbes cited uncertainty around tariffs as part of the market backdrop. Uncertainty can affect investor demand, but the report does not isolate its contribution to silver’s price.
  • Industrial and AI-related demand: The report connected demand for silver with AI data centers. Silver also has a substantial industrial market, though the later annual data show industrial demand fell in 2025.
  • Constrained supply and investor buying: Forbes also cited constrained supply and investor interest. Later Silver Institute reporting described tight physical liquidity and rising exchange-traded product holdings during an earlier 2025 squeeze, adding context without establishing that any one factor drove the December record.

What the 2025 supply-and-demand figures show

The Silver Institute’s April 15, 2026 summary of the World Silver Survey 2026 reported lower total demand and higher mine production in 2025 than in 2024, but also a fifth consecutive annual market deficit. The survey was researched and produced by Metals Focus; the figures below are the Institute’s reporting of its 2025 market data.

Measure 2025 figure reported by the Silver Institute What it indicates
Total silver demand Down 2% to 1.13 billion ounces Overall demand declined year over year.
Mine production Up 3% to 846.6 million ounces Mine output increased, but the market still recorded a deficit.
Industrial demand Down 3% to 657.4 million ounces Industrial use declined despite contemporary attention to AI-related demand.
Market balance Demand exceeded supply for a fifth consecutive year A deficit means reported demand was greater than reported supply; it does not, by itself, predict the next price move.

The Institute’s summary also described falling inventories, metal moving into CME vaults, higher exchange-traded product holdings, and increased bar and coin demand as contributors to an October 2025 liquidity squeeze. It reported high lease rates and prices amid tight physical liquidity. This is retrospective context from the Silver Institute’s summary of the World Silver Survey 2026, not a real-time account of December trading. The Institute’s April 15, 2026 summary attributes its survey findings to Metals Focus.

How did silver’s price change after the $78 milestone?

The move above $78 did not mark a stable new range. In its April 2026 survey summary, the Silver Institute quoted the World Silver Survey 2026: “Having started 2025 below $29, its price broke a series of all-time records, peaking at $84 in December, before rallying further into 2026.” The same Institute summary reported that silver rose above $121 on January 29, 2026, then traded in the mid-$70s in early April. These are dated observations, not current prices.

The swing from above $121 to the mid-$70s is a reminder that silver can move sharply in both directions. A market deficit describes a relationship between demand and supply over a reporting period; it does not ensure that prices will rise, or say when a move might happen.

What was expected for silver supply in 2026?

On February 10, 2026, the Silver Institute forecast total global silver supply would rise 1.5% to 1.05 billion ounces in 2026. That was a forecast, not a reported outcome. In the same forecast-era outlook, the Institute cited tight physical supply in London, geopolitical and U.S. policy uncertainty, concerns about Federal Reserve independence, and supply-demand fundamentals as supportive factors. Its February 10, 2026 outlook reflects expectations at that time; it should not be treated as confirmation of what supply or prices ultimately did.

What should a personal-finance reader take from the surge?

The $78 crossing is useful as a historical marker, not as a buy signal or a current reference price. If you are evaluating silver, keep the time period and the kind of exposure clear: a COMEX-attributed price report is not the same thing as the retail cost of a coin or bar. The cited market reports document volatility and a persistent deficit, but they do not compare investment products or establish whether silver suits a particular investor.

For a physical purchase, the cited market data do not establish a retail price, dealer premium, availability, or a recommended product. Retail cost can differ from a benchmark price, so compare the full quoted purchase cost and terms rather than assuming the reported market price is what a buyer will pay. Nothing in the reported milestone or deficit guarantees future returns.
