Sila’s silicon-anode factory in Moses Lake, Washington, is operating and ramping production—but the available announcements do not establish its current output or confirm deliveries to automakers. The plant makes Titan Silicon, a silicon-carbon anode material intended for lithium-ion batteries, not complete batteries or consumer products. Sila says the material can increase energy density; its published improvement figures are company claims with different comparison baselines.
What Sila’s factory makes
Sila’s Moses Lake facility produces Titan Silicon, the company’s silicon-carbon (Si/C) anode material for lithium-ion cells. An anode is one of the cell’s core components. Titan Silicon is designed to replace graphite in that role; it is not a finished battery, an EV, or a battery accessory. Sila describes the material as intended for automotive and other original-equipment-manufacturer applications.
The company says using Titan Silicon can raise a cell’s energy density, potentially allowing more range from a given battery size or more runtime from a given battery weight. Those are potential cell-level benefits, not a guarantee of a specific vehicle range or charge time: vehicle design, battery configuration and other factors also matter.
What is known about production so far
Sila announced on September 23, 2025, that operations had begun at the Moses Lake plant. Its opening announcement described testing and refining manufacturing recipes before initial batches of Titan Silicon. In a July 21, 2026 update, Sila said the factory had begun operations in fall 2025 and was ramping production. That supports describing the facility as operating and in a production ramp, but the announcements do not state a finished-material output figure or establish customer deliveries from Moses Lake. #1 Best Overall
- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
That distinction matters because opening a factory is not the same milestone as sustaining full-rate production or shipping qualified material to a vehicle program. The public updates describe process work and a ramp, not verified production volumes.
How large the plant is—and what its capacity figures mean
Sila says the Moses Lake factory occupies more than 600,000 square feet on a 160-acre site. Its published capacity figures have changed in framing over time; they are company descriptions of initial or planned capacity, not records of measured output.
| Source and date | Capacity statement | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Sila opening announcement, September 2025 | 2–5 GWh initial capacity | The company’s range for initial capacity at opening; not a reported production result. |
| Sila update, July 2026 | 2 GWh initial Phase 1 capacity; designed to expand to as much as 250 GWh over five years | The Phase 1 figure and longer-term design target are company statements, not evidence that the target has been built or reached. |
| Sila manufacturing page, accessed in 2026 | Up to 100 GWh by 2030 | A separately stated company target. The page’s figure is not interchangeable with actual annual output. |
The 2025 opening announcement and 2026 update do not describe the initial capacity in identical terms. Sila’s separate manufacturing-page target also uses a different horizon and framing, so these figures should be reported with their source and date rather than combined into a single realized capacity number. Sila says the facility uses ISO 9001-certified quality frameworks and identifies U.S.-based suppliers REC Silicon, Norco, Airgas and Linde on its manufacturing page.

What Sila claims about energy density
Sila has published two energy-density comparisons. In September 2025, it said Titan Silicon could deliver “up to a 20% energy density improvement over the industry’s best-performing graphite cells.” In July 2026, it described its Si/C anode as delivering “20–40% higher energy density than traditional graphite.” These statements use different graphite baselines and should not be combined into one generalized improvement figure. The available sources do not provide independent test data validating them or a like-for-like independent comparison. Energy density also refers to energy stored per unit of mass or volume; it is not the same measure as a vehicle’s miles of range, which depends on the complete battery pack and vehicle.

A 2022 U.S. Department of Energy project fact sheet named Mercedes-Benz as the intended first commercial customer for material from the facility and identified the G-Class as the planned initial vehicle application. TechCrunch reported in September 2025 that Sila had supply agreements with Mercedes and Panasonic. These are announced customer relationships and plans; the sources do not confirm that either company has received material produced at Moses Lake or that Titan Silicon is already in customer vehicles. How the factory was funded and what was planned
The DOE’s 2022 fact sheet recorded a $100 million federal cost share and a $300 million recipient cost share for the Auto Scale Silicon Anode Plant. It projected 20 GWh-equivalent full production by the project’s conclusion in 2026. Those were project expectations recorded in 2022, not proof that the plant subsequently reached that production level.
On July 21, 2026, Sila announced a separate $300 million private equity round, saying the funding would accelerate U.S. production and support a planned Phase 2 expansion. The financing announcement describes intended use of the funds, not completion of that expansion.
