Re:

Should You Wait for a Market Pullback Before Investing?

Waiting for a pullback adds a second timing decision: when to invest again. Use your goal deadline, ability to tolerate losses and portfolio diversification—not a forecast alone—to choose an approach.

Usually, not solely because you expect a pullback. Waiting means making two timing decisions: when to hold back and when to invest again. For money intended for a long-term goal, a diversified plan and the ability to stay invested through losses matter more than trying to predict a market dip. Money needed soon is different: it should not be exposed to losses you cannot wait out. No historical example can tell you whether a pullback is imminent.

What waiting for a pullback really means

A pullback is a decline in market prices, but the word does not identify a dependable entry point. Even if prices fall, an investor who waited still has to decide whether the decline is large enough, whether it may continue, and when to put the money to work. If prices rise instead, the investor must decide whether to keep waiting or buy at a higher level. The strategy therefore depends on a forecast and a follow-up decision—not just on recognizing a dip.

That does not make every decision to hold cash a mistake. Money may need to remain available for a near-term goal, or an investor may not yet have a plan they can stick to through losses. The key is to distinguish a decision based on the purpose and timing of the money from a bet that the market will soon become cheaper.

Start with when you will need the money

The SEC’s Saving and Investing guide says investment choices should fit a person’s goals, timing needs and tolerance for risk. It cautions against risky investments for goals that are five years away or less. Stocks can lose principal, and a short deadline may leave too little time to wait for a recovery if prices fall.

If the goal is five years away or less

Do not treat a possible pullback as the main question. Ask whether the money can withstand a loss at the moment you need to spend it. If it cannot, exposing it to market risk may be unsuitable regardless of whether prices look high or low today. A market decline can arrive at an inconvenient time, and an investor with a fixed deadline may be forced to sell rather than wait.

If the goal is many years away

A longer horizon gives an investor more time to remain invested through volatility, but it does not guarantee a profit or remove the possibility of substantial losses. The relevant test is whether you can keep following the plan during a decline, rather than whether you expect to feel comfortable with every market move.

Check whether your plan can survive a loss

Before investing, consider the size of a decline you could tolerate without abandoning the plan or being forced to sell. The SEC guide puts it plainly: “All investments involve taking on risk.” That applies whether you invest today, stage purchases over time, or wait for a lower price. Changing the entry date changes the path you experience; it does not make a risky investment risk-free.

  • Loss capacity: Could you leave the investment alone if its value fell while your goal remained years away?
  • Behavior: Would a decline prompt you to sell, or could you continue following a written plan?
  • Concentration: Is the plan spread across investments, or does it depend heavily on a small number of holdings?
  • Timing: Is there enough time before you need the money to avoid selling simply because prices are down?

If the answer to the first or last question is no, delaying an investment may be a prompt to revisit the risk level and timing of the plan—not evidence that you should wait for a particular market signal. This is a general decision framework, not an individualized asset allocation.

Why diversification helps—and what it cannot do

Diversification spreads exposure across investments rather than relying on one concentrated position. It can reduce some risks tied to individual holdings, but it cannot ensure that a portfolio avoids losses when markets broadly fall. The SEC guide states: “Diversification can’t guarantee that your investments won’t suffer if the market drops.”

That distinction matters when deciding whether to wait. A diversified portfolio may still decline in a market downturn; diversification is not a way to call the bottom or eliminate market-wide risk. Conversely, a concentrated bet can expose an investor to risks that a broad market move alone does not describe. The right question is not simply “Will the market pull back?” but whether the investments and the amount of risk fit the goal and the investor’s ability to stay the course.

What historical examples say about timing—and what they do not

Historical performance illustrates why waiting for reassuring economic news can be difficult: prices may turn before the news feels better, and a small number of strong periods can account for a meaningful share of long-run growth. Those examples explain the risk of missing gains; they do not establish that markets will rise from current levels or that investing immediately is right for every person.

The SEC guide’s long-term context

The SEC’s Saving and Investing guide says the stock market historically returned around 10% annually over the long term, or around 6%–7% after inflation. Those are historical averages, not promised returns, and the guide’s publication date is not established here. The same guide notes that people who invested at the 1929 market peak waited more than 20 years for the market to return to the same level. Together, those points show why a long horizon matters: historical growth did not prevent a very long wait after a severe downturn.

A 1926–2002 illustration from Buffalo Funds

Buffalo Funds’ 2003 annual report, citing Ibbotson Associates data, calculated that $1 invested in the stock market at the beginning of 1926 grew to $1,775 by the end of 2002. In the report’s hypothetical calculation, missing the six best years in that 77-year period would have left $181 at the end of 2002. This is a historical illustration from a fund sponsor, tied to a particular dataset and period—not a projection of what an investor will earn or proof that every investor should invest all available money at once.

A secondary-sourced statistic for 1963–2004

A 2025 Matthew 25 Fund annual report repeats a claim about H. Nejat Seyhun’s analysis of U.S. market trading days from 1963 through 2004: missing the ten best days would have reduced returns by 41%, while 0.85% of trading days accounted for 96% of market gains. The letter cites a Forbes article; the underlying study is not independently established here. Treat these figures as a reported historical claim, not as a current-market statistic or forecast. The practical implication is limited but important: a strategy that stays out of the market can miss strong days as well as avoid some weak ones, and the timing of either is uncertain.

Investing at once versus spreading contributions

If money is already available for a long-term investment, an investor may choose to put it to work according to a plan or spread purchases over a schedule. A regular contribution pattern can spread the dates at which purchases occur and may make the process easier to follow. It does not guarantee a better average price, profit, or protection from loss.

Spreading purchases also means some money remains uninvested until later dates. If prices rise during that interval, later contributions buy at higher prices than they would have on the earlier date; if prices fall, later contributions may buy at lower prices. Which path occurs cannot be known in advance, so neither approach can be promised to outperform across every market path.

Buffalo Funds’ 2003 annual report cautioned: “Dollar cost averaging does not assure a profit or protect against loss in declining markets; investors should consider their financial ability to continue purchases through periods of low price levels.” The caution applies to the behavior as well as the arithmetic: a schedule only helps if the investor can continue it when prices are falling and finances permit.

When a schedule may be useful

  • You receive income over time and invest contributions as they become available.
  • A predetermined schedule helps you avoid making each purchase depend on a short-term market prediction.
  • You can maintain the schedule through declines without relying on money needed for near-term expenses or goals.

When staging is not a solution

Spreading purchases does not fix a portfolio whose risk is too high for the goal, make a near-term investment safe, or remove the need for a decision about the uninvested balance. It should be chosen as a practical contribution method, not presented as a guaranteed way to beat a one-time investment or to avoid losses.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Name the goal and deadline. Identify when the money is likely to be needed. If the goal is five years away or less, take the SEC guide’s warning about risky investments seriously rather than relying on a hoped-for recovery.
  2. Decide what loss you can withstand. Consider both whether you can afford a decline and whether you could avoid selling in response to one.
  3. Review the investment exposure. Check whether the plan is diversified or concentrated, while remembering that diversification cannot prevent broad market losses.
  4. Choose a contribution method you can follow. Decide whether to invest available long-term money under your plan or to use scheduled contributions. Account for the possibility that prices could rise or fall while part of the money remains uninvested.
  5. Write down what would change the plan. Use changes in the goal, deadline, finances or ability to tolerate risk as reasons to review it. Do not mistake a prediction about the next pullback for a reliable trigger to buy or sell.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Waiting for a signal that cannot be defined in advance. “After the pullback” still leaves open how much of a decline counts and whether prices might fall further.
  • Using past averages as a promise. The SEC’s long-term return figures and the dated market illustrations describe past experience, not a return an investor can count on.
  • Confusing diversification with protection from all losses. A diversified portfolio can still fall when the market drops.
  • Starting a contribution schedule and stopping during declines. The method cannot assure a profit, and the Buffalo Funds report specifically warns that investors need the financial ability to continue purchases through low-price periods.
  • Ignoring the date the money is needed. A long-term investment approach may not suit money committed to a near-term goal.

How to interpret the evidence

The historical examples come from different sources and cover different periods: the SEC’s guide gives broad long-term context and a 1929 peak example; Buffalo Funds’ 2003 report presents a 1926–2002 illustration; and the 2025 Matthew 25 Fund letter repeats a statistic attributed to a study of 1963–2004 trading days through secondary sourcing. They are not directly interchangeable measures, and none says whether a pullback is imminent or identifies an optimal schedule for a particular investor.

Past returns can show how waiting has sometimes affected hypothetical results, but they cannot settle an individual decision. The SEC guide’s central criteria—goal, timing need and risk tolerance—remain the more useful starting point than a forecast about where prices go next.
