Should You Refinance Federal Student Loans Into a Private Loan?

Private refinancing may lower your rate, but can cost you federal repayment flexibility, forgiveness, deferment, forbearance, and discharge protections.

Refinancing federal student loans into a private loan can reduce your interest rate, but it permanently replaces federal debt with private debt—and can end access to federal repayment plans, forgiveness, deferment, forbearance, and discharge protections. It may be worth considering only after comparing a written offer’s rate, term, payment, total cost, and relief provisions with the federal benefits you would give up. If you need a lower payment, check your federal options with your loan servicer before refinancing.

What happens when you refinance federal student loans privately?

A private lender pays off the federal loans included in the transaction and issues a new private loan. From then on, you owe the private lender under the new contract. Your old federal loans are no longer eligible for federal loan benefits, and the change generally cannot be reversed. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) distinguishes this from federal Direct Consolidation, which combines eligible federal loans while keeping them within the federal program. Private refinancing and federal consolidation are different transactions with different consequences.

The change applies to the federal loans you refinance; it is not simply a change of servicer or a new payment arrangement within the federal program. Before accepting an offer, confirm which loans and balances it would pay off and make sure you understand the new contract. If you keep other federal loans outside the transaction, assess those separately rather than assuming the private loan changes their status.

Federal Student Aid cautions: “While refinancing your federal student loans into a private student loan can sometimes lower your interest rate, your private student loan will not necessarily have the same terms and conditions as your federal student loan.” Federal Student Aid’s refinancing guidance explains the trade-off.

Which federal benefits could you lose?

Private refinancing ends access to federal loan provisions for the loans you refinance. The importance of that loss depends on your current repayment status and what you may need later—not just your interest rate today. A benefit you do not use now may still matter if your income, employment, health, or family circumstances change during repayment.

Federal repayment plans and payment flexibility

Federal loans may qualify for repayment plans that adjust payments based on income or other eligibility rules. A private lender is not required to offer equivalent terms. If your income falls, your expenses change, or your work becomes less predictable, federal options may be more useful than a lower rate that comes with a payment you cannot sustain.

Federal plan availability is changing. Federal Student Aid reports that the SAVE Plan ended following a court order in March 2026; alternatives depend on loan type and disbursement date. Check the current information at Federal Student Aid’s SAVE Plan court-actions page and verify your own eligibility using its repayment tools and your servicer. Do not assume that a plan you have read about is currently available to you, or that your eligibility is the same as another borrower’s.

Forgiveness and discharge

Refinancing into private debt can make the refinanced balance ineligible for federal forgiveness or discharge programs. Before applying, check whether you are pursuing or may qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF), teacher forgiveness, income-driven repayment (IDR) discharge, or another federal discharge benefit. Past progress toward a federal program may not carry over to a private loan.

Look at your actual status and future plans, not just the name of a program. If you work in public service or teaching, or are counting on an IDR-related discharge, confirm your progress and eligibility with the relevant federal information and your servicer before taking a step that may end access for the loans being refinanced. Refinancing can be especially consequential if the benefit is part of your long-term repayment strategy.

Private lenders set their own contract terms. The CFPB notes that some—but not all—private lenders offer discharge or forgiveness if a borrower dies or becomes permanently disabled. Read the specific loan agreement rather than assuming its protections match federal rules.

Deferment and forbearance

Federal loans have approved deferment and forbearance options subject to program requirements. A private lender’s hardship relief is governed by its contract and may be narrower, discretionary, or unavailable in circumstances where you need it. Review what the lender promises, how to request relief, and whether interest continues to accrue during a pause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare the actual conditions for relief rather than relying on a general statement that a lender offers hardship assistance. Check what circumstances qualify, how long a pause may last under the contract, and whether the lender is required to grant it when conditions are met or retains discretion. If you value the ability to seek federal relief, account for that protection as part of the cost of giving it up.

When might private refinancing be worth evaluating?

A private offer may merit a closer look if you can qualify for a meaningfully better rate and are unlikely to rely on federal income-based payment options, forgiveness, or federal hardship protections. A strong credit history or an eligible co-signer may affect whether you qualify and what terms you receive; rates are based in part on credit history. Do not assume that an advertised rate is the rate you will be offered.

  • You have stable income and can comfortably manage the proposed payment.
  • You have checked your progress toward forgiveness and do not expect to use federal repayment or discharge benefits.
  • The written offer improves your overall borrowing cost after considering its rate type, fees, term, payment, and contract protections.
  • You have enough financial resilience to handle income disruption without relying on federal relief.

Be especially cautious if you work toward PSLF or teacher forgiveness, expect income volatility, may need hardship assistance, value federal discharge protections, or cannot comfortably afford the private loan’s required payment. A lower rate alone does not establish that refinancing is a better fit.

This is a decision framework, not a recommendation for every borrower. The trade-off depends on your loan types, repayment status, forgiveness progress, income and employment outlook, ability to manage the offered payment, and the terms you actually qualify for. If any of those details are uncertain, clarify them before comparing a private offer with your federal loans.

How to compare a private offer with your federal loans

Compare actual written terms, not a headline rate or estimated savings. Put the potential benefit and the federal protections surrendered side by side before deciding. A useful comparison should address what you pay each month, what you pay over the full term, and what happens if your circumstances change.

1. Confirm the rate and whether it can change

Check whether the private loan has a fixed or variable rate and review its APR and fees. A fixed rate offers more predictable payments; a variable rate can rise, increasing the cost. Compare the private offer with the fixed rate on your current federal loan where applicable. Ask how often a variable rate can change and what determines the adjustment.

Do not treat a variable rate’s initial quote as guaranteed for the entire repayment period. Consider whether you could still afford the payment if the rate rises. Compare actual written offers based on your qualifications, because private refinancing rates depend on credit history and advertised terms may not be available to you.

2. Compare term, monthly payment, and total repayment

A low quoted rate may be paired with a shorter repayment term, which can mean a higher monthly bill. A longer term can reduce the monthly payment while increasing the total interest paid. Compare the amount due each month and the total you would repay over the full schedule; neither a low rate nor a low payment tells the whole story by itself.

Make sure the comparison uses the full repayment term for each option. A smaller monthly bill is not necessarily a lower-cost loan, and a shorter schedule may be difficult to manage even if its rate looks attractive. Consider whether the required payment fits your budget reliably, not only in a month when your finances are going well.

3. List the federal benefits you would surrender

Check your loan types, repayment plan, forgiveness progress, and likely need for deferment, forbearance, or discharge. Consider not only benefits you use now, but also those you could need if your income, employment, health, or family circumstances change. Confirm current program eligibility with Federal Student Aid and your servicer.

Use your individual records to identify what is at stake. If forgiveness is a possibility, establish what progress you have made before refinancing. If repayment flexibility or hardship relief matters to you, weigh it against the offer’s potential interest savings rather than treating it as an incidental detail.

4. Read the private contract’s relief and discharge terms

Find the exact provisions for hardship relief, payment pauses, death, and permanent disability. Determine whether relief is guaranteed when specified conditions are met or left to the lender’s discretion, and whether interest accrues. The existence of a policy at one lender does not establish that another lender offers the same protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the written contract in view when comparing lenders. Ask for clarification about provisions you do not understand before accepting an offer; a general description of a lender’s policy is not a substitute for the terms that apply to your loan.

5. Compare offers you actually qualify for

Eligibility and final terms depend on the borrower and offer. Request written terms and compare any fees, rate type, repayment schedule, and protections. Do not base the decision on a rate shown in an advertisement or on assumed savings.

If you compare more than one offer, use the same checklist for each: fixed or variable rate, APR, fees, term, monthly payment, total repayment cost, hardship terms, and discharge protections. No particular lender or offer is universally suitable; the relevant question is whether the terms available to you make sense alongside the federal protections you would give up.

If your main goal is a lower monthly payment

Contact your federal loan servicer and ask which repayment options are available for your loan types and circumstances before replacing federal debt. Federal repayment eligibility can depend on loan type and disbursement date, and available plans are subject to change. Use the current tools and guidance at StudentAid.gov and confirm the result with your servicer. A private refinance may lower a payment by extending the term, but that can increase total interest and it still removes federal protections for the refinanced loans.

When you compare a federal option with a refinance offer, check the payment and the longer-term cost separately. The goal of reducing a bill now may be different from minimizing total repayment, and a private loan’s payment relief may come from extending the schedule rather than from a lower overall cost. Verify current federal options for your specific loans instead of relying on outdated descriptions of repayment plans.

A practical decision test

Before signing, make sure you can answer these questions with your own loan records and the lender’s written offer:

  • What federal programs or relief could I lose, and have I verified my forgiveness progress?
  • What are the private loan’s fixed or variable rate, APR, fees, term, monthly payment, and total repayment amount?
  • If my income drops or I face a hardship, what relief does the contract require the lender to provide?
  • Can I afford the payment throughout the proposed term without depending on federal repayment flexibility?
  • Have I checked current federal repayment eligibility with Federal Student Aid and my servicer?

If you cannot answer these questions, or if federal protections may matter to you, pause before refinancing. The decision depends on your specific loans, goals, circumstances, and actual offer; a lower quoted rate is not enough to settle it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will refinancing federal student loans lower my interest rate?

It may, but a lower rate is not guaranteed. Private refinancing terms depend in part on your credit history and the offer you qualify for. Compare actual written terms, including the rate type, fees, repayment term, monthly payment, and total repayment cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What federal benefits do I lose if I refinance into a private loan?

The loans you refinance lose access to federal protections, which can include federal repayment plans, approved deferment and forbearance, and federal forgiveness or discharge programs. Private lenders set their own contract terms, and their relief or discharge provisions may not match federal rules.

Can I lower my federal student loan payment without refinancing?

Possibly. Contact your federal loan servicer and check current repayment options on StudentAid.gov before replacing federal debt. Eligibility depends on factors such as loan type and disbursement date, and current options can change. Federal Student Aid reports that SAVE ended following a court order in March 2026.

Is private refinancing the same as federal Direct Consolidation?

No. Private refinancing pays off the federal loans included in the transaction and replaces them with private debt, ending federal protections for those loans. Federal Direct Consolidation combines eligible loans within the federal program; it is a different transaction.

Should I refinance if I am pursuing PSLF or teacher forgiveness?

Be particularly cautious. Refinancing can end access to federal forgiveness programs for the loans refinanced, and past progress may not carry over to private debt. Check your program status and eligibility before applying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I compare before accepting a private refinance offer?

Compare the fixed or variable rate, APR, fees, term, monthly payment, and total repayment cost. Also read the contract’s hardship, payment-pause, death, and permanent-disability provisions, and weigh those terms against the federal benefits you would give up.

The Bottom Line

A private refinance may be worth evaluating if you qualify for a meaningfully better offer, can comfortably afford its payment, and are unlikely to need federal repayment flexibility or forgiveness. But refinancing replaces federal debt with private debt and can be difficult or impossible to reverse. Check your current federal options and forgiveness status, then compare written offers—including rate, term, total cost, and contract protections—before deciding.
