Is it normal to shop for an engagement ring together?
It is common, but there is no single right way to choose a ring. The Knot’s 2024 Jewelry & Engagement Study surveyed more than 7,000 recently engaged couples: 77% of proposees said they had some involvement in selecting or purchasing the ring. That included 39% who gave hints or discussed preferences, 29% who shopped with their partner, and 9% who were present when the ring was purchased. Those categories describe different kinds of involvement; 77% does not mean that 77% went shopping together. The Knot’s study and guidance also report that 23% of proposees had no involvement in ring selection.
Those figures describe the couples surveyed, not every couple. The useful takeaway is that involvement can range from a conversation to choosing the ring side by side—or none at all. The choice should reflect your preferences, not a rule about how a proposal is supposed to work.
What are the benefits of going together?
Less guesswork about style and fit
The wearer can point out what they like, try on different settings, stone shapes, and metal colors, and judge comfort directly. Trying rings on can also change someone’s mind about a style they expected to prefer, notes The Knot.

A wearer with an active lifestyle might prefer a lower-profile solitaire or bezel setting to a design with many pavé stones, according to gemologist Lorraine Brantner, quoted by The Knot. If you want some input without choosing the finished ring together, share a few pictures, identify must-haves and deal-breakers, or try on styles without settling on the final stone. You can also agree on size, broad design preferences, and budget while leaving the gemstone choice to the proposing partner. Does shopping together ruin the surprise?
No. Choosing the ring together does not reveal when, where, or how a proposal will happen. Decide which parts you want to keep private: perhaps the ring is settled, but the proposal date and setting remain unknown. Or you can agree on broad preferences while your partner chooses the final ring.

- Ask about timing before choosing a proposal date. GIA says a semi-mount setting may take a few days to a week to make, while a custom ring can take several weeks. These are general estimates, not a guarantee for a particular jeweler, ring, or order. Confirm the seller’s current lead time before relying on it.
- Check how a wedding band might sit. Ask whether a future band will fit alongside the engagement-ring setting, a practical consideration highlighted by Jewelers Mutual.
- Agree on what stays secret. Decide whether the final stone, proposal date, location, or the whole proposal will be a surprise.
