Has Sheffield Wednesday been taken over?
Yes. Arise Capital Partners LLC completed the purchase on 2 May 2026, ending Chansiri’s ownership, according to BBC Sport. On 5 May, the club’s joint administrators, BTG, confirmed the sale was completed in accordance with relevant regulatory requirements.
The acquiring group was led by David Storch and included Michael Storch and Tom Costin. The club had identified Arise as its preferred bidder in an update on 10 March 2026; the later completion announcement confirmed the transaction.
The sources establish completion in May, but do not establish whether ownership or the club’s financial restrictions changed after that. The sale price has not been disclosed in the cited reporting.

What does the £30m figure mean?
In summer 2025, Chansiri said he had rejected offers of £40m and £30m, with the latter from a US-based group, BBC Sport reported. The same report said his valuation was understood to be about £100m. These were reported claims and an attributed valuation—not a verified later price reduction or the eventual sale price.

Why was a 15-point deduction expected—and why was it waived?
Wednesday entered administration, bringing the EFL’s insolvency policy into play. BBC Sport reported that the policy ordinarily required unsecured creditors to receive 25p for each pound owed. Chansiri claimed loans of £64m; at that rate, the amount would have been £16m. BBC also reported that an approximately £7m loan secured against the stadium was cleared.
According to the BBC’s 6 May account, the proposed settlement treated creditor groups differently: football creditors and HMRC were to be paid in full, while other unsecured creditors received 25p in the pound promptly. Arise also offered deferred payments to Chansiri linked to future success and made a firm commitment to immediate stadium investment. The BBC reported that Chansiri accepted after a deadline, but his response arrived late.

The EFL exercised its discretion and decided not to impose the anticipated 15-point deduction. Its statement, reproduced by ITV News, described the matter as “an incredibly challenging and complex situation” and said the board concluded a deduction would not be appropriate. Wednesday could sign players but remained subject to budget restrictions for two seasons, according to BBC Sport’s completion report.

The available July 2026 article does not substantiate the description “ex-chairman speaks out.” FourFourTwo interviewed Mel Sterland, a former Sheffield Wednesday player, about the period under Chansiri. Sterland is not identified there as a former chairman, so his comments should not be attributed to one.

Sterland told the magazine: “Oh, it was horrendous, absolutely horrendous,” and said he felt sorry for supporters, who he believed had been treated badly. The identity of any former chairman intended by the headline wording is not established in the available sources.
