Sometimes—but only when the exact refurbished laptop costs enough less to justify its condition uncertainty, battery risk, warranty terms, and remaining software support. Compare the full model and the total cost of making it usable with an equivalent new laptop; the label “refurbished” alone does not establish value.
What “refurbished” means—and what it does not
Refurbished laptops are generally restored for resale by a manufacturer or retailer, but the inspection and repair process varies by seller. A used laptop may simply be resold without the same testing or repair. Dell, for example, says its certified refurbished products are tested, repaired when needed, reimaged, and given a final inspection; that is Dell’s process, not a universal standard. Read the listing to establish who refurbished the device and what work was done.

Cosmetic grades are also seller-specific. A grade describes appearance according to that seller’s definitions; it does not by itself prove battery health, reliability, or how long the laptop will receive software updates.

Compare a specific refurbished listing with a new laptop capable of the same work—not with a broad processor label or the cheapest new model. Which? warns that an older “Core i5” can differ substantially from a current one; check the complete processor name and model.

| What to compare | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Price and configuration | What is the exact model and CPU? How much RAM and storage does it have? Are the display and ports suitable? What would a similarly capable new laptop cost? |
| Software support | Can this exact model run the operating system and applications you need, and how long will it continue receiving updates? |
| Condition and battery | What does the seller’s grade mean? Is battery condition stated or backed by a minimum? Is the correct charger included, and what would replacement cost? |
| Buyer protection | Who handles the warranty? What does it cover and exclude? How long is the return window, and who pays return costs? |
Then calculate the effective price: the listing price plus any charger or battery replacement you are likely to need. Set that against the new equivalent’s price, support runway, and warranty. There is no established universal discount percentage that makes every refurbished laptop a good deal; the right price gap depends on the actual machine and your tolerance for uncertainty.
Check updates before you buy
Software support is part of the laptop’s useful life. Which? notes that Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025 and recommends checking Windows 11 eligibility for older PCs. For a Chromebook, check Google’s model-specific Auto Update Policy. A low purchase price may not compensate if the laptop cannot meet your security, software, or work requirements.

Price in battery and charger risk
A battery that has aged may not last long unplugged, which matters especially if you travel or work away from an outlet. Ask the seller for the battery’s condition or a seller-backed minimum rather than assuming a cosmetic grade tells you anything about it. Check whether a replacement is available and what it costs. Confirm that the correct charger is included and inspect the terms for charger and charging-port coverage; these can affect the real cost and usability too. No single battery-health percentage is established as a universal pass mark.

Warranty length, coverage, exclusions, and return rules vary by seller, product, and region. For example, Microsoft’s US refurbished Surface page states a 12-month hardware warranty and sets out return-policy conditions. ASUS’s US terms illustrate that refurbished coverage can include exclusions. Those examples are not standard terms for other brands, products, sellers, or countries.

In the UK, Which? describes a 14-day cancellation period for online retailer purchases under the Consumer Contracts Regulations and a 30-day right to reject faulty, unsuitable, or misdescribed goods under the Consumer Rights Act. These are UK-specific rules, not global return guarantees. Elsewhere, check local consumer law as well as the seller’s written policy; identify who processes a warranty claim and whether service or return shipping could add cost.
When refurbished is the better financial choice
Which? laptops expert and senior researcher Oliver Trebilcock says: “Yes – provided you choose your model carefully, you can get more for your money with a refurbished versus a new laptop. However, the age of the model is important.” That is a qualified case for careful comparison, not a guarantee that refurbished is always cheaper over its useful life.

- It may suit you when the configuration meets your needs, support remains adequate, the seller explains its testing and condition, and the total price is meaningfully below a comparable new option.
- A new laptop may be the safer choice when you rely on the machine every day, need dependable unplugged runtime, require longer support, or cannot absorb the cost or disruption of a repair.
Do not treat any general savings claim as a promise for your listing: no robust market-wide comparison of refurbished and new laptop prices, failure rates, battery life, or total ownership cost is established here. Dell’s process and the warranty examples above describe particular companies’ policies, not the whole market.
Checklist for a particular listing
- Write down the exact model number and full processor name, then compare its performance and configuration with a new laptop that can do the same work.
- Confirm RAM, storage, display, and ports meet your needs.
- Verify operating-system eligibility and the update policy for that specific model; check that it supports your required software.
- Read the seller’s definition of the cosmetic grade and ask for battery condition, any minimum guarantee, and replacement availability and cost.
- Confirm the correct charger is included and check its condition.
- Identify who refurbished the laptop, what testing or repairs were performed, and who provides warranty service.
- Read warranty exclusions, the return window, return costs, and any relevant local consumer rights.
- Compare the final payable price—including likely battery or charger costs—with a similarly capable new model.
Prefer a listing that spells out testing, repairs, condition, battery terms, warranty, and returns. If you shop through a marketplace, evaluate the specific seller and listing rather than assuming every refurbished product carries the same protections.
