Should I Sell My Old MTG Cards? How to Decide

“Old” does not determine value. Identify your cards, compare realistic net proceeds with a concrete offer, and keep the cards you still value.

Sell your old Magic: The Gathering cards if the money or space matters more to you than keeping them—but check what you own and compare realistic net proceeds before accepting an offer. “Old” alone does not tell you what a card is worth. A practical middle ground is to keep cards you still play or care about, sell worthwhile singles individually, and bundle the low-value remainder.

How do you decide whether to sell?

Start with what you want from the collection. Keeping cards has play and sentimental value that a price estimate cannot capture; selling converts them to cash and frees storage space, but gives up the cards. Consider the trade-offs that matter to you:

  • Keep cards you still play, have personal attachment to, or would regret replacing.
  • Sell individually when identified cards appear valuable enough to justify separate listings, accurate descriptions, packing, shipping, and buyer support.
  • Sell to a dealer or local game store when convenience and speed matter more than doing the work to sell each card yourself. Compare a specific offer rather than assuming a standard payout percentage.
  • Split the collection when a few cards merit individual pricing but the rest is not worth handling one by one.
  • Pause and seek another assessment if the collection may contain valuable older printings or an offer is based on a quick look while version, condition, or authenticity is uncertain.

When comparing routes, weigh net money after fees and shipping, time and effort, payment speed, risk of pricing mistakes or condition disputes, and whether the route can reach suitable buyers in your region.

How do you find out what your old Magic cards are worth?

First identify the exact version and condition. Cards with the same name can differ by set, promo status, language, artwork, foil status, or printing. Those details affect which listing or price reference is relevant. Cardmarket’s seller guidance stresses matching the correct product page, including for distinct editions and promos.

Magic the Gathering 50 Cards Includes 25+ Rares/Uncommons MTG Cards Collection Foils & mythics possible!
  • Includes a mix of AT LEAST 25 Rares/Uncommons which is half of the cards.
  • Absolutely NO... Basic lands, Foreign, or silver/gold bordered cards.
  • Some may contain Foils or Mythics but not all.
  • Sets can range from Beta to the current Magic the Gathering set.
  • Mint/Excellent condition only.
  1. Make an inventory or take clear photographs. For a large collection, start with likely standouts—older cards, rares, foils, promos, and alternate printings—before deciding whether a full catalogue is worth your time.
  2. Match each card to its exact version. Check set, language, foil status, promo or alternate-version details, and other distinguishing features. Do not treat every card with the same name as interchangeable.
  3. Inspect condition in good light. Look at edges, corners, surface wear, creases, water damage, bends, and foil curl. TCGplayer’s condition guide considers physical structure, playability, and authentication markers; it also notes that foils can curl. Describe what you see, and do not imply a grading service examined the card unless it did.
  4. Compare references for the same version and condition. eBay’s card price guide supports collectible card games and uses details such as set, year, variant, and grade where applicable. A listed asking price is not proof that a card sold for that amount. eBay says its market value updates every few minutes, but rare or infrequently sold cards may have little or no guide data.
  5. Calculate likely net proceeds. Subtract selling and transaction fees, postage, packing materials, and the value of your time. Account for possible returns or condition disputes when comparing an online sale with a direct offer.
  6. Get more than one concrete offer or route for a significant collection, if feasible. Keep a record of what is included and of any cards removed before a bulk sale.

Prices, buyer demand, fees, and local offers change. No current price for a particular card—or universal percentage paid by stores—is established here, so a personalized valuation requires the exact inventory, versions, conditions, location, and urgency.

Where should you sell old MTG cards?

The best route depends on how much effort you are willing to spend and whether you can use the platform in your region. Each route shifts work, control, and convenience differently.

Route Best suited to Main trade-off
Individual listings on TCGplayer Identified cards with enough likely value to justify listing and fulfillment You control listings but handle accurate cataloguing, fees, shipping, and buyer support. TCGplayer’s seller agreement requires accurate, complete descriptions and timely seller responses; fees can change.
eBay listings Cards where photos, buyer reach, and card-specific price references are useful You still need to identify variant and condition accurately and fulfill the sale. The price guide is a reference, not a guaranteed transaction value.
Cardmarket Sellers who can access its market and match the exact card listing Using the wrong edition or promo page can cause listing problems or disputes, and condition grading can be subjective. Check current access in your region and follow the seller guide.
Local game store or reputable dealer People who want an in-person discussion or one collection offer A concrete offer may trade potential proceeds for speed and less work. Wizards recommends reputable dealers in its authenticity guidance, which is purchase-oriented and does not promise a buylist rate. Ask what the offer assumes and includes.
Keep or sell only part Collectors who still value playing with or owning some cards Retained cards bring no immediate cash, and their future prices are uncertain.

What fees should you account for?

Use the fee schedule for the exact selling arrangement you plan to use; one platform’s program terms do not apply to another route. TCGplayer says marketplace fees are deducted from seller earnings and can change. Its Direct Reimbursement Invoice FAQ describes a schedule effective June 18, 2026: for Direct, cards priced at $2.49 or less have a 50% fee; cards priced at $2.50 or more have a $1.12 reimbursement fee plus standard marketplace and transaction fees. For that latter band, the FAQ lists 8.95% commission, 2.5% transaction, and a possible 2.5% Pro fee. This is a specific Direct-program schedule, not a general estimate for TCGplayer sellers or other marketplaces. Check the current terms and calculate your own inventory’s likely costs.

Alongside platform fees, include postage and packing, the time to identify and list cards, and the possibility of returns or disputes. Compare the resulting net with the actual amount and convenience of a dealer’s offer—not with an optimistic asking price.

Does tournament legality affect whether you should sell?

Legality and resale value are separate questions. A format’s rules may affect the buyers interested in a card, but legality alone does not establish its market value or casual appeal. Wizards’ December 20, 2022 announcement described a tabletop tournament-legality policy tied to prerelease availability. For a specific card, check the current format rules and banned or restricted list; do not use that older policy announcement as a current value guide.

How can you reduce mistakes before accepting an offer?

  • Be cautious if a buyer values the whole collection after only a quick look, especially when older printings or unusual versions may be present.
  • Record what is included in a collection offer and keep track of any singles you remove before selling the remainder.
  • Wizards advises caution around proxy copies of valuable cards and recommends reading auction fine print in its collecting guidance. Do not assume a card is authentic from its age or appearance alone.
  • Use sleeves if helpful while sorting or photographing cards. They are a handling accessory, not evidence of value and not a way to improve a card’s existing condition.
