Hindenburg Research accused Roblox of overstating its user and engagement metrics and allowing serious child-safety failures. The report, published on October 8, 2024, combined a challenge to Roblox’s financial disclosures with allegations involving grooming, sexual content, predatory behavior and inadequate moderation.
Those claims remain allegations, not established findings that Roblox committed securities fraud or that child exploitation is widespread across the platform. Hindenburg disclosed that it was short Roblox stock, creating a financial incentive for the share price to fall. Roblox rejected the report’s financial claims and said its operating metrics and safety measures are disclosed and established.

The controversy therefore involves two separate questions: whether Roblox’s metrics accurately communicate the number of unique human users and genuine attention on the platform, and whether its safety systems adequately protect children. Evidence relevant to one question does not automatically prove the other.

What Hindenburg alleged
Hindenburg’s report described Roblox as having “inflated key metrics” and a “pedophile hellscape.” Those are Hindenburg’s characterizations, not independent legal or regulatory conclusions. The firm said it was short Roblox shares, meaning it could benefit financially if the stock declined.

According to the report, Hindenburg relied on Roblox’s public filings, interviews with former employees, monitoring of thousands of games and servers, analysis of player data, and searches and tests involving usernames, groups, games and chats. The company’s full report is available from Hindenburg Research.
The report’s financial allegations and safety allegations should be assessed separately. A platform can have imperfect or confusing user metrics without committing fraud, while documented safety failures do not by themselves establish that the company intentionally misled investors.
The dispute over Roblox’s user numbers
DAUs are not the same as unique people
Roblox commonly reports daily active users, or DAUs. A DAU is an account-based activity measure, not necessarily a count of unique human beings. One person may control several accounts, including alternate accounts, and automated or bot accounts may also affect activity data.

The report also pointed to Roblox disclosures stating that DAUs are not necessarily unique individuals because one person can use multiple accounts.
That distinction matters to investors. A disclosed account-based metric is not automatically misleading simply because it includes multiple accounts. The harder questions are whether the company describes the limitation clearly, whether the methodology is consistent, and whether the difference between accounts and people is material to revenue forecasts, advertising reach or valuation.
Alternate accounts and bots
Hindenburg said former Roblox employees described an internal “de-alting” process intended to identify accounts linked to the same person. The report alleged that publicly reported DAUs were not fully adjusted for alternate accounts and that multiple accounts were used to farm in-game items, evade bans, manipulate followers or automate activity.

Hindenburg cited one former employee’s estimate that accounting for alternate accounts could reduce the number of real people by approximately 20% to 30%. It then estimated that reported “people” figures were inflated by 25% to 42% or more. These are Hindenburg’s estimates, not independently established reductions to Roblox’s reported user base.
Evidence from particular games or geographic markets also cannot automatically be applied to the entire platform. Botting may be significant in a popular experience while having a smaller effect on Roblox’s overall DAU figure.
Engagement hours are also disputed
Hindenburg challenged Roblox’s reported average of approximately 2.4 hours of engagement per user per day in 2023. It said its own monitoring found much shorter periods of active game time and estimated that engagement hours could be overstated by 100% or more.
The report said its researchers monitored about 7,200 games and 2.1 million servers, analyzed approximately 297.7 million rows of player data and examined about 30.4 million unique daily users. It reported roughly 22 minutes per day spent in games in its sample and described accounts that allegedly remained connected for more than 24 hours.
Those findings raise a legitimate measurement question, but connection time is not necessarily attentive play time. A user may leave a game running while away from a device, while another user may log in repeatedly or visit multiple experiences in one day. Conversely, measuring one session or one game may fail to capture a user’s total daily activity.
Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter reportedly criticized parts of Hindenburg’s interpretation, arguing that the report may have treated time in one game as if it represented a user’s entire daily activity. The methodological dispute is important: a metric can be consistently calculated and fully disclosed while still being a poor proxy for unique human reach or focused attention.

Roblox’s reported figures should be checked against the company’s original filings and earnings materials available through its investor-relations site. The available dossier identifies average DAUs of 79.5 million in the second quarter of 2024 and 68.4 million in 2023, but those figures should not be treated as unique-person counts without reviewing the precise filing language.
What Hindenburg alleged about child safety
The report also alleged that Roblox’s social features and user-generated content systems allowed adults to contact or target children. Hindenburg said its tests found grooming and sexual solicitation risks, explicit or pornographic material, sexualized roleplay, violent or hateful experiences, offensive usernames and groups, and inappropriate content accessible to accounts identifying as under 13.
Hindenburg said it searched and tested usernames, groups, games and chats and cited earlier media reports, nonprofit investigations and criminal cases involving abuse connected to Roblox or other online platforms used by children.
These claims require careful distinctions:
- An offensive username, group or game title does not prove that its operator was a child predator.
- The existence of a game or the number of visits to it does not establish how long it remained online, how many people saw it or whether Roblox later removed it.
- A criminal case involving a Roblox user can demonstrate a real risk or alleged incident, but it does not prove that Roblox knowingly enabled every incident.
- Predators may use Roblox to initiate contact and then move conversations to another service. That makes Roblox part of a potential chain of conduct, not necessarily the only venue.
- Self-reported age is not reliable age verification. A user may misstate whether an account belongs to a child or an adult.
The available material supports saying that Hindenburg documented or alleged serious moderation and child-safety failures. It does not establish the prevalence of exploitation across Roblox or prove that every account identified by the report belonged to a predator.
How Roblox responded
As reported by Engadget, Roblox said Hindenburg’s financial claims were misleading, emphasized that its operating-metric definitions had been disclosed to investors and pointed to its trust-and-safety systems and preventative measures.
That response addresses the central issue of disclosure, but a broad statement that the company takes safety seriously does not independently resolve every allegation about a particular account, game, moderation decision or enforcement delay. The relevant questions include what Roblox knew, when it knew it, how quickly it acted and whether its controls worked as represented.

Hindenburg also discussed a reported 2% year-over-year decline in trust-and-safety expenses in the second quarter of 2024. That comparison should be checked against the original filing and the precise expense category. A spending decline alone would not prove that safety failures caused harm or that management prioritized growth over child protection.
Why Hindenburg’s short position matters
Short selling creates a clear conflict of interest for evaluating the report. Hindenburg stood to gain if negative publicity contributed to a lower Roblox share price. That incentive should make readers scrutinize its definitions, data selection, calculations and causal claims.
It does not, however, make the report false. A short seller can identify genuine accounting, disclosure or operational problems. The appropriate response is neither to dismiss the report as biased nor to accept its headline conclusions as proven.
For investors, the key distinction is between an operating metric that is imperfect but transparently defined and one that is presented in a way that could reasonably cause investors to believe it measures something materially different. Establishing intentional securities fraud would require much more than showing that multiple accounts, bots or inactive sessions exist.

What investors should watch
Anyone assessing Roblox’s stock should look beyond the headline dispute and examine the company’s original filings, metric definitions and later disclosures. Useful questions include:

- Disclosure: Does it explain the effect of multiple accounts, bots and repeated sessions?
- Consistency: Has the methodology changed over time, and were changes disclosed?
- Materiality: Would removing suspected alternate accounts materially alter revenue, advertising or valuation assumptions?
- Independent verification: Can the report’s estimates be replicated from public information?
- Safety reporting: Does Roblox provide meaningful information about reports, removals, response times and enforcement?
- Governance: What do filings, regulators or courts—not just company statements or short reports—establish about knowledge and intent?
Investors should also avoid treating engagement hours as interchangeable with unique users, active play, advertising reach or revenue-producing attention. Each measure has a different meaning.

What parents should take from the controversy
The allegations do not justify declaring Roblox categorically safe or categorically unusable. They do reinforce that parental controls reduce risk rather than eliminate it.
Parents should review Roblox’s current parental-control guidance and Safety Center, then check account age settings, chat and privacy controls, friend lists, spending permissions and the content their child is accessing. Children should know how to block and report users and should be encouraged to tell a trusted adult about requests for secrecy, personal information, images or off-platform contact.
Controls cannot substitute for supervision, especially because users can misrepresent their age and harmful behavior may move between platforms.

Hindenburg produced a detailed, interested-party critique that raises credible questions about whether Roblox’s account-based metrics overstate unique human users, whether engagement figures include inactive or automated time, and whether moderation systems consistently protect children. Roblox disputes the financial interpretation and points to its disclosures and safety measures.
The available evidence does not prove that Roblox committed accounting fraud, that most Roblox users are bots or that child exploitation is widespread across the platform. The central unresolved issue is whether Roblox’s metrics are merely imperfect but adequately disclosed, or whether the company’s descriptions and controls materially misled investors or failed to meet legal and safety obligations. Resolving that question requires original filings, reproducible methodology, internal account-linking and moderation data, enforcement records, and independent regulatory or court findings.
