Sheffield Wednesday’s takeover is complete. The EFL announced on 2 May 2026 that administrators had agreed to transfer the club’s assets to Arise Capital Partners LLC, and joint administrators BTG confirmed the sale was completed on 5 May. The widely repeated headline reference to a £30m hurdle is not established by those announcements or the other cited reporting.
Has Sheffield Wednesday been taken over?
Yes. The EFL’s 2 May 2026 announcement said the administrators had concluded an agreement to transfer the club’s assets to Arise Capital Partners LLC. BTG, the joint administrators, confirmed completion on 5 May 2026. This is a completed sale, not a pending bid or continuing takeover process.
Who bought the club?
The buyer was Arise Capital Partners LLC, a consortium led by David Storch, with Michael Storch and Tom Costin named alongside him in the EFL and BTG announcements. The sources establish the purchaser and the named consortium members; they do not set out a detailed breakdown of ownership shares.
How did the sale process reach completion?
Sheffield Wednesday Football Club Limited entered administration on 24 October 2025, according to BBC Sport’s account of the process. An earlier preferred-bidder deal fell through. In March 2026, BBC Sport reported that Arise had become the new preferred bidder; the administrators subsequently reached the agreement announced by the EFL in May.

The process also involved financial and sporting consequences that should be kept distinct. BBC Sport reported that the earlier Arise bid’s terms implied a return of about 6p in the pound for unsecured creditors, and that the club had already been deducted 18 points during the 2025–26 season. Those reports describe the earlier bid and that season’s existing penalty; they do not establish a £30m hurdle or describe the final sale price.
Will Wednesday receive another points deduction?
A professional adviser to Arise said the EFL Board exercised discretion not to impose an additional 15-point deduction when the club exited administration. On that adviser’s account, Wednesday would start the 2026–27 season in League One without that further deduction. This is a statement attributed to the buyer’s adviser; it should not be confused with the points already deducted during 2025–26.

What is known about the £30m hurdle?
The exact £30m figure in the headline is not substantiated by the cited material. The EFL and BTG confirmed the transfer and completed sale but did not identify a £30m threshold. BBC Sport’s reporting discusses bid terms, estimated creditor recovery and a possible sporting penalty—separate issues that do not verify that figure. Without the original reporting that established it, £30m should not be presented as a confirmed condition of the takeover.
