Sheffield Wednesday Takeover: Arise Completes Sale as Bord and Ashley Bids Become History

Sheffield Wednesday’s takeover was completed in May 2026, when Arise Capital Partners acquired the Club. James Bord’s consortium withdrew its proposed bid in February, while Mike Ashley was reported as a bidder during an earlier stage of the sale. Neither name describes a live takeover option as of 8 October 2026.

Who owns Sheffield Wednesday now?

Arise Capital Partners completed the takeover in May 2026. The EFL identified the consortium members as David Storch, Michael Storch and Tom Costin, and said the Club under its new ownership met the League’s requirements and was no longer regarded as in Administration. BTG, the joint administrator, also announced completion on 5 May. The EFL’s announcement and BTG’s completion announcement confirm the outcome.

Storch said Arise intended to provide “stability, ambition and a clear direction.” That is the consortium’s stated aim, not a guarantee of future performance. BTG Joint Administrator Kris Wigfield said the administrators’ objective had been to protect the Club and secure its future.

What happened to James Bord’s offer?

Bord’s consortium was selected as preferred bidder in December 2025, after Sheffield Wednesday entered administration in October. Its proposed takeover was reported at £47.8 million. A preferred-bidder designation meant the consortium had been selected to progress the sale; it did not mean the purchase had completed. BBC Sport’s February 2026 report covered the withdrawal and the consortium’s account.

On 25 February 2026, the consortium withdrew. In its statement, as reported by BBC Sport, it cited historic mishandling and underinvestment and said it had provided more than £4 million to help fund the Club over the preceding two months. Those explanations and the funding figure were the consortium’s claims, not independently audited findings.

Was Mike Ashley on standby?

Mike Ashley was reported as another bidder during the earlier sale process. When Arise became the new preferred bidder in March 2026, BBC Sport reported that Ashley was understood to have bid during that renewed process. That is historical reporting, not evidence of an active bid after Arise’s purchase completed in May. The available announcements establish Arise as the successful purchaser; they do not establish that Ashley is now on standby or seeking to take over. BBC Sport’s March 2026 report describes the negotiations at that stage.

Why was the 15-point deduction dropped?

During negotiations, Arise’s proposal faced a possible 15-point deduction under EFL creditor-payment rules. The EFL ultimately exercised discretion not to impose that deduction when the Club exited administration. The 15 points were therefore a potential sanction, not a deduction that was first applied and later reversed. The EFL’s May statement sets out its decision.

The EFL attached other conditions to the Club’s continued League membership: a budget restriction for the next two seasons and player registrations in line with an agreed business plan. The points decision did not mean those conditions were removed.

Why do Companies House filings still refer to administration?

Companies House lists an administrator’s progress report filed in June 2026 and an extension of the administration period filed on 30 August 2026 for Sheffield Wednesday Football Club Limited. Those entries concern that named legal company. The EFL’s May statement concerns the Club under its new ownership and its status in the League. The two statements describe different legal and regulatory contexts; the later company filings do not, by themselves, show that the completed sale of the Club did not happen. Companies House’s filing history records the company documents.
