Sheffield United’s acquisition by COH Sports was completed in December 2024; the available reporting does not establish that a new takeover is now close to completion. The current story is a dispute over purchase money and a later ownership restructuring, followed by a High Court winding-up order against COH Sports Bidco Limited. The EFL has said it will consider the implications under its rules, but no points deduction is reported as imposed.
What is happening with the Sheffield United takeover?
The deal at the centre of the latest reports is the completed 2024 sale to COH Sports, led by Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy—not a newly announced acquisition nearing completion. United World, the former owner, says part of the purchase consideration remains unpaid. The current owners dispute the connection between that claimed debt and a subsequent restructuring of the club’s ownership.
The reported sale price differs by source: The Guardian described the transaction as about £100 million in its 8 July 2026 report, and as £110 million in its 19 August 2026 report. Those are attributed figures, not a single independently established total. The Guardian, 8 July 2026; The Guardian, 19 August 2026.
What does each side say about the claimed debt and restructuring?
| Issue | United World’s position | Owners’ position |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase consideration | United World says £35 million remains due. The Guardian’s 8 July report described an approximately £100 million sale, an initial payment of about £30 million and an alleged unpaid balance of £35 million. | The owners accepted that about £35 million was outstanding, but disputed that it was connected to the restructuring. Figures are reported by The Guardian on 8 July 2026. |
| Purpose of the restructuring | United World alleged that the share transfer was related to avoiding payment of the outstanding balance. | The owners said the debt and restructuring were unrelated, and presented the new structure as a platform for future investment. A 1919 Partners LLC spokesperson said it was intended to create “a stronger platform, more efficient and flexible ownership structure that further supports the long-term financial sustainability of Sheffield United.” |
| Regulatory status | United World’s allegations are claims; the reports do not establish that the alleged purpose of the restructuring was proven. | The EFL said it was considering regulatory matters. The reports do not say that the league had reached a final decision or imposed a points deduction. |
The club announced in June 2026 that 1919 Partners LLC, a Delaware corporation, was its parent company. The announcement and the opposing explanations do not, by themselves, resolve the dispute over the purchase balance or the purpose of the restructuring. The Guardian’s 8 July 2026 report details the competing positions.

Why did COH Sports Bidco receive a winding-up order?
On 19 August 2026, the High Court issued a winding-up order for COH Sports Bidco Limited after United World’s petition, according to The Guardian. Bidco was the acquisition company; the report does not say that Sheffield United Football Club itself was wound up. Nor does the order establish that United World’s allegation about the restructuring was proven.
The distinction matters: the order concerns a specific company involved in the acquisition, not an announcement that the football club has ceased operating. The Guardian reported that the EFL would consider the implications of the court decision under its regulations. The Guardian, 19 August 2026.

Has the EFL imposed a points deduction?
No points deduction is reported as imposed in the available coverage. The Guardian reported in July that the EFL had requested observations from relevant parties and was considering compliance with its regulations. Following the winding-up order in August, the league said it would consider the implications under its rules while continuing to consider other regulatory matters. These are ongoing processes, not a reported final sanction.
In the July report, an EFL spokesperson said: “As this process is ongoing, we are not in a position to make any further comment at this time.” The later report described the league as considering the implications of the High Court decision. July EFL update; August update.

Who owns Sheffield United now?
COH Sports acquired the club from Prince Abdullah’s United World in December 2024. In June 2026, Sheffield United announced 1919 Partners LLC as its parent company. The reporting reviewed here does not establish a later completed sale or identify a new buyer poised to take over. It also does not establish the outcome of any subsequent settlement, investment or remaining EFL proceedings.
