Netflix has not announced a permanent free plan or named any countries where one will launch. On its Q2 2026 earnings call, co-CEO Greg Peters said the company would continue considering a free offering but had no near-term plans to launch one. Separately, Netflix said it was re-testing free trials for some new members in certain markets; a limited trial is not an ongoing free subscription.
What Netflix has said about a free plan
On the Q2 2026 earnings call, Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters said a free offering could make sense in some markets, but the company needed to consider whether it would draw customers away from paid plans. The third-party transcript records his conclusion: “free is something that we’re going to continue to consider, but we have no near-term plans to launch something.” (Earnings Whispers, Q2 2026 call transcript, July 16, 2026)

That leaves the idea under consideration, not announced. Netflix has not specified launch timing, countries, eligibility, content selection, advertising terms, or any other conditions for a permanent free tier. The clearest statement available is that there were no near-term launch plans at the time of the call.
Free trials are not the same as a free plan
Netflix’s Q2 2026 shareholder letter says the company began re-testing free trials for non-rejoining new members in a number of markets, excluding the United States and the United Kingdom. A trial is a temporary promotion with eligibility conditions; a free plan would be a continuing subscription option. Netflix has not disclosed the trial duration or a full list of participating countries in the cited letter, so the trial announcement does not establish whether a particular reader can sign up.
What Netflix offers instead: a lower-priced ad-supported plan
Netflix already offers an ad-supported experience in selected countries, but it is a paid plan, not a free one. Netflix describes it as a lower-priced option with commercial breaks in most shows and movies. Most of the catalog is available, but a small number of titles may be unavailable because of licensing restrictions, and the experience is not offered in every region. Netflix’s investor FAQ lists ads plans in 12 markets as of 2026: Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It also lists 15 additional ads-plan markets for 2027: Austria, Belgium, Colombia, Denmark, Indonesia, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, the Philippines, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, and Thailand. These are ads-plan markets, not announced free-plan countries. (Netflix Investor Relations, “Top Investor Questions”)
Netflix’s May 2026 Upfront announcement said its ads plan would expand to 15 new countries in 2027 and that the ads experience had reached more than 250 million global monthly viewers. That company-reported audience figure refers to ad-supported viewers; it is not a count of paid plan subscriptions or free users. (Netflix, “Netflix Upfront 2026: Get Closer,” May 13, 2026)

Why Netflix may be cautious about making a free tier
Peters identified two considerations: whether a free offer could cannibalize paid plans and whether a market has a scaled advertising business. A free tier would need to attract enough advertising value to make sense without undermining subscriptions. Netflix has not said which markets, if any, meet those conditions, or that these factors guarantee a launch.

There is no confirmed country list for a permanent free tier. Check Netflix’s current plan and signup information for your region before relying on a social post or a report about a trial. A promotion may be limited to eligible members, while the ad-supported plan remains a paid subscription and may not be available in every country.
