Sheffield United has not been reported as being taken over again. The major development is a High Court winding-up order against COH Sports Bidco Limited, the acquisition vehicle used in the 2024 purchase. United World, Sheffield United’s former ownership group, sought the order over more than £35 million it says remains due from the sale; that figure is a claim, not an established final debt.
What happened in the Sheffield United takeover dispute?
On 19 August 2026, The Independent reported that the High Court granted United World’s request for a compulsory winding-up order against COH Sports Bidco Limited. United World had petitioned over sale proceeds it claimed were unpaid and exceeded £35 million. The reporting describes an order against Bidco, the company used for the acquisition—not an order winding up Sheffield United Football Club.
The distinction matters: the court order is a development involving the buyer’s acquisition vehicle, while the claimed amount and any resulting payment dispute remain separate questions. The cited coverage does not establish that a court finally determined that more than £35 million is owed.
Is Sheffield United being taken over again?
No new completed takeover is reported in the cited coverage. Sheffield United’s audited annual report says COH Sports completed its acquisition of the club on 23 December 2024. COH Sports was a Delaware-based consortium led by Helmy Eltoukhy and Steven Rosen.

The subsequent ownership developments concern the structure around the existing ownership and the EFL’s regulatory review, rather than a reported sale of the club to a new buyer. The Guardian reported on 22 June 2026 that a club board update named 1919 Partners LLC, a Delaware company, as the club’s parent company and at the centre of its ownership structure.
Companies House lists Blades Leisure Limited as Sheffield United Football Club Limited’s active person with significant control, holding 75% or more of its shares and voting rights. Companies House cautions that it does not verify the accuracy of information filed with it. That entry should not be read as a complete account of the parent-company chain, particularly alongside the Guardian’s reporting about 1919 Partners.

What is the EFL reviewing, and could the club lose points?
The EFL said on 19 August 2026 that it would consider the implications of the winding-up order under its regulations, including whether further action was required. It also said it was still considering other regulatory matters after changes to the ownership structure and wider-group developments. The cited reports give no final EFL decision and do not establish that a breach has occurred.
The Independent reported that Sheffield United could face a 12-point deduction if the EFL ruled that ownership regulations had been breached. That was a conditional possibility, not a penalty announced or imposed in the cited coverage.

Earlier, on 8 July 2026, The Guardian reported that the EFL had asked relevant parties for observations about regulatory compliance. The former owner alleged the restructuring was connected to unpaid sale proceeds. The new ownership group denied that the restructuring and debt were related, describing the restructuring as a move toward a more flexible, sustainable structure. The EFL said its process was ongoing and it could not comment further at that time.
Sheffield United told The Independent it was in contact with the EFL and that day-to-day operations were unaffected. That is the club’s stated position; it does not determine what the EFL may decide later.

What do the reported figures establish?
| Figure | What it refers to | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| More than £35 million | Sale proceeds United World says remain unpaid | A claim reported by The Independent in 2026, not a final determination of the amount owed. |
| 12 points | Possible EFL deduction | Reported by The Independent in 2026 as conditional on an EFL finding of an ownership-regulation breach; not reported as imposed. |
| £11 million | Loan from COH Sports Bidco to the club | Paul Quinn’s 28 September 2026 analysis of the audited accounts for the year ended 30 June 2025 describes it as interest-free, unsecured and repayable on demand. Its treatment after the balance-sheet date is not established here. |
| £2.8 million | Club cash balance | Reported in the same analysis as the balance at 30 June 2025; it is a historical figure, not the club’s current cash balance. |
The audited accounts cover the year ended 30 June 2025, so their figures should not be mistaken for a current snapshot of the club’s finances. The reported loan terms also do not, by themselves, establish what the ownership dispute means for the club’s present cash position.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What remains unresolved?
- Whether the EFL will find any ownership-regulation breach, and whether it will impose a sanction.
- Whether the payment dispute between United World and the current ownership group will be settled or litigated further.
- What any eventual regulatory or financial developments will mean for the club beyond the positions stated in the cited coverage.
The EFL’s August statement confirms that its review was continuing, but does not announce an outcome. The court order against Bidco, the former owner’s claim, and any possible sporting sanction are distinct matters; none should be treated as a final ruling against the football club.
