No new takeover offer from Prince Abdullah is verified by the reporting available through 25 September 2026. The confirmed development is a £35 million payment dispute between Sheffield United’s former and current ownership groups, followed by a High Court winding-up order against the company that bought the club. An analysis published in September reported that Abdullah had been sounded out in 2025 about an adviser or minority-investor role, but that is not evidence of a current bid to retake control.
What is the latest on Prince Abdullah and Sheffield United?
Sheffield United was sold in December 2024 by United World, the group associated with Prince Abdullah, to the COH Sports group, led by Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy. Published estimates of the sale value vary: The Guardian reported about £100 million in July 2026 and £110 million in its August report, while The Esk’s September analysis put the reported range at approximately £100–111 million. These are reported estimates, not one settled figure.
The current dispute concerns unpaid sale consideration. United World says roughly £35 million remains due. The Guardian reported on 19 August that 1919 Partners acknowledged that £35 million was outstanding, while disputing that the debt prompted a change in the ownership structure.
What happened in the £35 million dispute?
| Date | Established development | What remains a party’s position or unresolved |
|---|---|---|
| June 2026 | Sheffield United announced 1919 Partners LLC as its parent company and central entity in the ownership structure. | United World alleged that the transfer of shares from COH Sports Bidco Limited to the new company was intended to avoid payment. 1919 Partners said the restructure and the debt were unrelated, describing the change as a way to support long-term investment and financial sustainability. The motive has not been established as an adjudicated finding. |
| July 2026 | United World said about £35 million remained due from the sale and brought a winding-up petition against COH Sports Bidco Limited. | The EFL said it had requested observations from relevant parties and could not comment further while the process was ongoing. |
| 19 August 2026 | The High Court issued a winding-up order against COH Sports Bidco Limited. The Guardian reported that 1919 Partners conceded £35 million was outstanding. | 1919 Partners denied that the debt caused the restructure. The court order was against the purchasing company, not an order winding up Sheffield United Football Club. |
The competing explanations should not be collapsed into a single account of why the corporate structure changed. United World made an allegation about avoiding payment; 1919 Partners gave a different rationale. The reported court order and acknowledged outstanding amount do not, by themselves, establish the disputed motive.

Does the High Court order mean Sheffield United is being wound up?
No. The 19 August order concerned COH Sports Bidco Limited, the company that bought the club, rather than Sheffield United Football Club itself. The club was quoted by The Guardian as saying: “This is a matter between the current owners and former owner.” That is the club’s description of the dispute, not a court or regulatory finding about its financial position.
Has Prince Abdullah made a new takeover bid?
The reporting reviewed does not verify a new takeover offer, an accepted proposal, or a return by Abdullah as Sheffield United’s owner. The Esk’s analysis, published in September 2026, reported that Abdullah had been sounded out in September 2025 about returning as an adviser or minority investor. That reported earlier contact is neither a current proposal nor a takeover bid.

What has the EFL said about possible consequences?
After the High Court order, the EFL said it would consider the implications under its regulations and was still considering other regulatory matters. Its spokesperson was quoted by The Guardian saying: “The EFL notes the high court’s decision to issue a winding-up order on COH Sports Bidco Limited.” The cited August reporting does not establish the final result of the EFL’s review or any sporting sanction. In particular, it does not report that a points deduction has been imposed.
