Shapeways Holdings, Inc. and its subsidiaries ceased operations and filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on July 2, 2024. A later business acquired available assets and resumed operating under the Shapeways name, but it is not the same legal company—and says it cannot access former customer accounts, model files or unfulfilled orders.

What happened to Shapeways?

In an SEC Form 8-K, Shapeways Holdings reported that it and each of its subsidiaries ceased operations and filed voluntary Chapter 7 petitions on July 2, 2024, in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. Chapter 7 is a liquidation process: a trustee administers the bankruptcy estate and liquidates assets. The filing also reported executive and board resignations concurrent with the petitions.

The later return of the Shapeways name does not mean the bankrupt public company continued as before. In a December 2024 company announcement, Shapeways said Manuevo BV acquired available Dutch assets in July 2024 and that new management completed purchases of available assets from the Dutch and U.S. trustees. Its FAQ identifies WVS International, Inc. and Manuevo BV as the buyers. The company says the new owners acquired the Shapeways name, website and original Eindhoven facility.

What happened to an order placed before the bankruptcy?

The relaunched company’s FAQ says pre-bankruptcy orders were lost in the bankruptcy and that the new business does not have the records needed to trace or fulfill them. A new order placed with the business now operating as Shapeways is separate from an order with the former company; the relaunch does not automatically honor an unpaid or unfulfilled old order.

Can former customers access old accounts or model files?

No, according to the relaunched company’s FAQ and December 2024 announcement. Shapeways says former accounts and customer data were lost, including user-owned model data. The company says the new owners did not buy or access those customer files, and that the Dutch trustee arranged for local devices to be wiped before sale. This is the company’s account of what happened to the data.

What should someone owed money do?

For money owed by the former Shapeways entity—including store credit—the company’s FAQ directs former customers and shop owners to contact the American bankruptcy trustee and submit a claim. That is a route to raise a claim, not a guarantee of payment; no individual recovery outcome is established by the company’s guidance.

Is the Shapeways marketplace back?

Not in its former form. In December 2024, CEO Marleen Vogelaar said, “While factory operations continue smoothly, unfortunately the marketplace won’t be available in the way it existed before July 2024.” The company said marketplace data was lost and that acquired software was outdated and not scalable.

In the same announcement, Shapeways described Thangs as a marketplace connecting digital models with Shapeways manufacturing. That announcement establishes the intended route at the time; check Thangs and Shapeways directly for current availability before relying on them to sell or order a product.

Why did the former company fail?

Shapeways’ FAQ attributes the collapse to strategic direction and investor needs that drove an aggressive growth strategy, high overhead and investment that did not produce significant revenue growth. It also says a sale could not be completed without serious cost reductions. These are the company’s explanations, not a court finding established by the SEC filing.

How to distinguish the former company from the relaunched business

Question Former Shapeways entity Business using the Shapeways name after the asset purchases
Status and timing Shapeways Holdings and subsidiaries ceased operations and filed Chapter 7 petitions on July 2, 2024, according to the SEC filing. New ownership resumed operations under the Shapeways name after available assets were acquired, according to company statements.
Old orders, accounts and models Old customer relationships and records relate to the bankrupt entity. The company says it cannot access former accounts, user model data or the records needed to trace and fulfill pre-bankruptcy orders.
Money owed A claim for a balance owed by the former entity should be directed to the American trustee, per the company FAQ. The FAQ does not say the relaunched business assumes former debts.
Marketplace The pre-bankruptcy marketplace did not return in its old form. Shapeways described Thangs as a marketplace route in December 2024; check current availability.

What services does Shapeways offer now?

The company’s January 2025 FAQ described manufacturing from Eindhoven and plans to expand business-to-business offerings. Its press page, accessed October 8, 2026, lists announcements dated in 2026 and says the current business has delivered more than 16 million parts worldwide. That cumulative figure is a company claim, not an annual production number or a statistic attributable solely to the bankrupt parent. Manufacturing capabilities and availability for individual customers can change, so confirm them on the live service pages or in a current quote.
