How Shape’s awards programs differ
Shape says that “All of Shape’s awards programs have a unique testing and assessment methodology.” The awards hub describes evaluation by editors, testers, experts, and the Dotdash Meredith testing lab, but each category article gives its own account of what was assessed. An award is therefore an editorial selection within a particular program and year, not a guarantee that a product suits every person.
The published scale also varies by program and year. These figures describe Shape’s 2025 awards, not a shared or current-cycle total:

What the awards say about evaluation
Sneakers: testing by activity and performance dimension
Shape’s 2025 sneaker coverage emphasizes activity-specific testing and factors such as comfort, support, durability, and performance. Its winners span distinct purposes, so a shoe selected for standing all day is not automatically a good running shoe, and a lifting shoe is not a substitute for either. Shape names the Brooks Glycerin 22 its Best Running Shoes winner and describes it as a cushioned road-running shoe based on its testers’ experience. Other examples illustrate the range: Shape lists ON CloudTilt for standing all day and adidas Dropset 3 for strength workouts. The winner page links readers to retailers, including Amazon for several products. Availability, price, and purchase terms can change; the award itself does not establish current stock or a particular retailer’s terms.
Skin: broad product categories and expert input
For its 2025 Skin Awards, Shape says it considered innovation alongside efficacy and consulted an expert panel that included plastic surgeons, dermatologists, a trichologist, and product formulators. The coverage spans many kinds of products and audiences, so a winner should be assessed against the reader’s actual skin concern and the product’s ingredients and intended use. Beauty: review, ingredient research, and expert perspectives
Shape’s 2026 Beauty Awards says its team reviewed a year’s worth of new launches and established products, read studies, conducted ingredient deep-dives, and surveyed dermatologists, plastic surgeons, makeup artists, editors, and Shape testers. These are reported editorial assessments and expert perspectives; they should not be treated as independent clinical proof that a product will produce a particular result. Fitness: gear, apparel, recovery, and platforms
Shape’s 2025 Fitness Awards considered brand submissions as well as products already tested for reviews, covering equipment, clothing, accessories and wearables, recovery, platforms, and shoes. Because the award list spans both physical gear and services, compare a winner with products intended to do the same job and be used in a similar training setting; durability and functionality matter as much as the award label. How to choose a winner for your needs
- For sneakers: Start with the activity—road running, trail, walking, court sports, lifting, or daily wear. Then assess fit and sizing, cushioning or support, durability, and performance for that use.
- For fitness products: Identify the job the item does and where you will use it. Compare functionality and durability with alternatives in the same gear or service category.
- For skin and beauty: Match the product type and ingredients to your concern, audience, and intended use. An award is not medical guidance; seek appropriate professional advice for persistent or medical skin concerns.
