Malka Golaja is the strongest match for the unnamed Serbian copper-and-gold discovery behind this headline, but the identification is not certain. Zijin Mining reported substantial contained-metal figures for the deposit in its 2024 year-end results. Those figures, relayed by EMX Royalty in March 2025, do not establish a mine, a production schedule or a market-changing addition to supply.
Which Serbian discovery does the headline mean?
The most plausible match is the Malka Golaja Copper-Gold Deposit, also called the MG Area in earlier disclosures. EMX Royalty said on March 27, 2025, that Zijin Mining’s 2024 annual results described Malka Golaja as a new discovery in Serbia’s Timok area, about seven kilometres southeast of the Cukaru Peki Mine.
The headline itself does not name a deposit, and Serbia has several separate copper-gold projects. Malka Golaja should not be confused with DPM’s Čoka Rakita or Rakita Camp projects, or with exploration targets associated with Mundoro and BHP.
How much copper and gold did Zijin report?
In its 2025 account of Zijin’s 2024 year-end results, EMX reported that Zijin disclosed 2.81 million tonnes of contained copper at an average grade of 1.87%, and 92 tonnes of contained gold at an average grade of 0.61 grams per tonne (g/t). EMX said those figures equate to approximately 150 million tonnes of mineralized material.

Contained metal is different from the total tonnage of rock, and neither figure says how much metal a mine could ultimately recover. The grades describe the average concentration in the reported material; they do not, by themselves, establish mining costs, recoveries or profitability.
How certain are the resource figures?
EMX said the disclosure it reviewed did not categorize Zijin’s figures under JORC or NI 43-101, and that EMX had not independently verified them. Because it lacked the underlying data, EMX assumed the figures were entirely inferred—the lowest-confidence mineral-resource category. They should therefore be described as reported resource figures, not reserves, independently confirmed estimates, mineable inventory or expected future production.

Zijin’s statement, reproduced in EMX’s March 27, 2025 release, said: “In addition, the deposit remains open at the periphery, indicating significant potential for mineral exploration.” An open margin means further exploration may be warranted; it does not guarantee that additional mineralization will be found or that any increase would be economic.

The reported figures alone do not show that it could. The available disclosure does not establish Malka Golaja’s potential production rate, development timeline, mine economics or likely contribution to global copper or gold supply. Without those pieces, it is not possible to quantify an effect on prices or supply.

Other Timok-area projects illustrate why discovery figures should not be mistaken for near-term supply. DPM announced a feasibility study for its separate Čoka Rakita project in November 2025. That study assumed a gold price of $1,900 per ounce and forecast construction starting in early 2027, with first concentrate production in the first half of 2029. These are study assumptions and company forecasts for Čoka Rakita—not development plans or forecasts for Malka Golaja. DPM’s Rakita Camp page describes inferred resources across Dumitru Potok, Rakita North and Frasen, with exploration continuing during 2026.
For a market impact to become more than a possibility, investors would need evidence about project development and economics, followed by a credible estimate of production and its scale relative to global supply. The reported discovery figures do not provide that evidence.

What should a personal-finance reader take from the announcement?
- Treat the headline as a discovery story, not a supply forecast. Contained-metal figures do not tell you when, or whether, a mine will produce.
- Keep the project identities separate. Malka Golaja, Čoka Rakita, Rakita Camp and the Mundoro-BHP exploration targets are distinct projects; figures or timelines for one cannot be assigned to another.
- Read the classification and verification caveats alongside the scale figures. Here, EMX reported that the disclosure lacked a JORC or NI 43-101 category, and EMX had not independently verified it.
