When Gradable launched its Carbon program in February 2021, the advertised control was about timing: growers could sell program-generated credits or bank them for a possible later sale. That gave participants a choice rather than requiring them to accept one sale price at enrollment. It was a historical offer; Gradable’s current materials describe broader sustainability services and do not establish that the 2021 credit product or its pricing remains available.
What “control” meant in the 2021 Gradable Carbon launch
Gradable said it would generate credits on growers’ behalf and let them choose whether to sell or hold them. Banking credits could preserve exposure to a later market price, but it did not guarantee that prices would rise or that waiting would produce a better return. The choice concerned sale timing; it should not be read as proof that growers controlled every aspect of credit ownership, pricing, or resale.
In the February 25, 2021 launch announcement, Gradable president and chief executive Devin Lammers said, “We believe the best way to create meaningful, long-term change is to provide farmers with the choice and power to participate in the carbon market on their own terms.” The statement describes the launch rationale, not a current contractual promise.
Practices and services described at launch
February 2021 coverage identified cover cropping, conservation tillage, and nitrogen management as practices related to generating credits. A grower’s use of any of these practices did not, by itself, establish eligibility, a credit quantity, or a payment. Cover crop seed mixes may be one input to cover cropping, but buying seed alone does not qualify a farm or ensure credits.

The launch package also described Gradable Plan, a separate optional agronomy service. It was presented as a multi-year, per-acre service that included soil sampling and custom crop-nutrition recommendations, with those services charged separately from the carbon-credit offer. The agronomy package and the credit program were distinct parts of the offering.
What the launch coverage said about payment
The two contemporaneous accounts describe different launch-era figures and units. Successful Farming reported a minimum of $10 per ton of stored carbon. Gradable’s February 25, 2021 announcement, carried by No-Till Farmer, described a first-year floor of $20 per credit and said Gradable retained a portion of credits for insurance, administration, and fees. The reports do not reconcile the $10-per-ton figure with the $20-per-credit figure, so they should not be treated as equivalent or combined. Neither figure is a current quote.

What Gradable describes today—and what remains unconfirmed
As of October 8, 2026, Gradable’s Sustainability materials describe support for regulatory and voluntary market programs, including farm-level data, measurement, reporting and verification (MRV), chain-of-custody support, claims, and dedicated program-lead assistance. The page reports 10 million acres enrolled, 5,000 farmers submitting data annually, and more than $30 million in premiums paid annually. These are company-reported platform figures; they do not establish a particular farm’s eligibility or expected payment.
Gradable’s current pages do not confirm whether the specific 2021 Carbon credit offer is still open, nor do they publish its current enrollment status or complete terms. The homepage also reports 20,000+ farmers on platform across 38 states, 10 million sustainability-program acres, 200 million+ bushels scored to date, and 140+ active grain originators. These are company-reported figures, not independently audited figures in the cited page.

Separately, an ADM announcement in 2022 characterized grain produced by farmers using Gradable environmental scoring and regenerative practices as having carbon-intensity footprints 20–30% below average. That company characterization is not a universal result or a guarantee that a particular practice caused a particular reduction.

Gradable’s current Terms of Service say sustainability participation is voluntary, that eligibility may depend on geography, crop, practices, or certification, and that a separate agreement may be required. Submissions may include agronomic data, field boundaries, land use, rotations, inputs, and management practices. Review the applicable written terms rather than assuming the 2021 launch description governs a current offer.

In February 2026, the National Corn Growers Association and Ag Data Transparent announced Ag Carbon Transparent principles and third-party contract verification intended to clarify what farmers sign, what assets are created and sold, payment terms, and future obligations. The announcement named Indigo and Bayer Carbon Program as the first programs to complete verification; it did not identify Gradable as verified under that process.
