The report linked the decline to a claimed RBI rate increase and tightening stance, alongside higher crude prices, foreign-investor selling and weak global markets. The RBI action has not been independently confirmed by the official sources available for this account, so it should be treated as a report attribution, not a verified policy announcement.
How far did the indexes fall?
The PTI report carried by The Tribune said the 30-share BSE Sensex was down 264.97 points at 72,408.15 in early trade. The 50-share NSE Nifty had fallen 87.50 points to 22,507.65. These are intraday readings reported on October 8, not closing levels.
Among Sensex stocks, the report named ITC, Adani Ports, Bharat Electronics, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv and InterGlobe Aviation as laggards. Tata Consultancy Services, HCL Tech, Tech Mahindra and Infosys were among the gainers. A decline in the headline indexes did not mean every constituent was lower.
What pressures did the report identify?
The report described several pressures occurring together, rather than establishing one cause for the market move:
#1 Best Overall
- Rising crude: Brent crude was reported 2.02% higher at $102.2 a barrel. Higher oil prices can weigh on sentiment about India’s import costs, but the report does not quantify the effect on the indexes.
- Foreign selling: Foreign institutional investors sold equities worth ₹6,121.37 crore on Wednesday, October 7, according to exchange data cited by the report.
- Weak overseas markets: The report said Asian markets were lower and U.S. markets had ended Wednesday lower.
- Monetary-policy concerns: Investors were described as responding to expectations of tighter domestic and global financial conditions.
The market readings and the crude and flow figures are time-sensitive. They describe the report’s snapshot, not current levels or a verified explanation of the decline.
What did the report say about the RBI?
The report said the Reserve Bank of India raised its benchmark repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% on October 7, 2026, in what it described as the first hike in nearly four years. It also reported that the six-member Monetary Policy Committee voted unanimously and changed the policy stance from “neutral” to “calibrated tightening,” signalling that further hikes were possible and near-term cuts were off the table.

Those policy details remain unconfirmed here. The RBI material available for this account included a rates page showing a 5.25% repo rate as of July 2026 and an official result for an August 3–5, 2026 MPC resolution; neither confirms or resolves an October decision. The report’s October claims should therefore not be presented as independently verified without the contemporaneous RBI resolution.
What market commentators said
The Tribune report quoted Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, describing a cautious outlook amid tighter domestic financial conditions, elevated U.S. Treasury yields and geopolitical uncertainty. That comment relies in part on the report’s unconfirmed account of the RBI decision.

The report also quoted Hariselvan Radhakrishnan, Founder & CEO of HST Wealth, saying the broader concern was the prospect of tighter domestic and global monetary conditions persisting, with pressure on risk appetite and foreign flows. These are attributed market opinions, not evidence that any one factor caused the early decline.

The reported index levels capture one point in the trading session. They do not establish where the Sensex or Nifty closed, whether the declines continued, or how the indexes performed over a longer period. Nor does the report isolate the contribution of crude, foreign flows, global markets or monetary-policy expectations.
