Not yet—not on the evidence available. National Storage Affiliates Trust (NSA) and Solar Landscape announced plans in August 2024 to pursue at least 100 megawatts of rooftop solar across roughly 1,000 self-storage properties. The companies said development had begun at initial sites, but did not report that the full portfolio was built or operating.
What NSA and Solar Landscape announced
On August 26, 2024, NSA and Solar Landscape said they had agreed to pursue at least 100 MW of rooftop solar, representing approximately 8.5 million square feet of rooftop space. Solar Landscape received exclusive rights to evaluate approximately 1,000 NSA properties across 42 states and Puerto Rico. These are planned-project figures, not confirmation that every evaluated property will get panels or that the target capacity has been installed. The companies’ announcement said development had started on initial sites.
The scope of the evaluation should not be confused with NSA’s entire portfolio. NSA reported 1,052 properties in 42 states and Puerto Rico as of June 30, 2024; the agreement covered evaluation of approximately 1,000 properties. How the rooftop and community-solar arrangement works
Rather than describing panels that serve only the storage facility beneath them, the announcement framed the projects as community solar: electricity is intended for nearby homes and businesses, with subscribers receiving discounted electricity. Under the typical commercial rooftop community-solar model described by Nareit, a developer leases roof space and manages financing, ownership, maintenance, grid connection, and customer subscriptions. That is useful context, but the NSA announcement does not establish every one of those details as a specific term of this agreement.

For NSA, the announced arrangement was to provide roof access in exchange for monthly lease payments; the company said it would incur no capital expenditure for the projects. Solar Landscape was to develop, own, and operate the systems. The announcement did not state the lease rates or provide subscriber pricing, eligibility rules, or discount amounts.
What the announcement does—and does not—show
The 100 MW-plus figure is a target the companies planned to pursue, not measured operating capacity. The available company announcement establishes initial-site development had begun in August 2024, but it does not establish how much has since been built, connected to the grid, or subscribed. It also supplies no independently reported generation, subscriber count, realized household savings, or avoided emissions for this partnership.

Solar Landscape said its STEP-UP program had trained more than 2,500 individuals, as reported in the 2024 announcement. That is a company-reported workforce-program figure, not an independently validated outcome in the cited sources. The announcement includes statements from both companies about their aims: NSA President and CEO David Cramer called the project a step toward the company’s responsibility goals, while Solar Landscape CEO and Co-Founder Shaun Keegan described community solar as beneficial to communities, residents, and property owners. These are the representatives’ characterizations, not independent findings about achieved project results.

Nearby residents should not assume that panels on a storage roof automatically mean they can enroll or will save a particular amount. The announcement does not identify participating utility territories, subscriber eligibility, enrollment procedures, discount terms, or when any particular site will serve customers. Those details would need to be confirmed in later project or utility information.

- Capacity: Is the number planned, under construction, connected, or operating?
- Sites and geography: How many properties are being evaluated or developed, and where are they?
- Project responsibilities: Who funds, owns, and maintains the equipment?
- Power destination: Does electricity serve the host building, nearby subscribers, or both?
- Subscriber terms: Who is eligible, what discount is offered, and how is it calculated?
- Results: Are savings and generation estimates or measured outcomes?
For the NSA–Solar Landscape portfolio, the cited announcement provides no comparable operating or subscriber-savings results.
