SEGA of America workers represented by the Communications Workers of America (CWA) ratified their first union contract in March 2024. UNI Global Union reports that ratification concluded on March 26, 2024. The agreement covered workers across several occupations and included reported gains in wages, job protections, game credits, and workplace policies.
Who was covered by the agreement?
The bargaining unit included a broad range of SEGA of America employees, including designers, translators, editors, producers, quality-assurance testers, and marketing managers, according to AFL-CIO and UNI Global Union.

The contract followed a 2023 union-representation election. The National Labor Relations Board record lists 212 eligible voters and 117 ballots counted: 91 for CWA representation and 26 against. Those numbers are the earlier representation-election results, not the vote to ratify the contract. The ratification margin has not been established in the cited sources.
What did workers gain?
Labor-federation accounts describe the agreement as providing wage increases that build on base pay, just-cause protections, layoff protections, and commitments to credit everyone who contributes to video games. They also report clarification of SEGA’s noncompete policy. UNI Global Union additionally identifies provisions concerning artificial-intelligence use at work, hybrid arrangements, professional development, and benefits.

These are high-level summaries of the reported gains. CWA Local 9510’s publicly available 68-page document is titled “SEGA of America, Inc. Tentative Agreements with CWA, Local 9510” and contains staged materials dated December 14, 2023, January 17, 2024, and February 27, 2024. Because it is labeled tentative agreements, it should not be treated as proof of the executed contract’s exact wording. The cited public accounts do not establish every final clause verbatim.
Why the contract matters to game workers
The reported provisions address both compensation and workplace security: wage progression can affect ongoing earnings, while just-cause and layoff protections concern how discipline and job loss are handled. Credit commitments address recognition for the many roles involved in making a game, beyond the most visible contributors.

Jasmin Hernandez, a short-form animation production manager and member of AEGIS-CWA, described the contract as a “watershed moment” for video-game workers and said it showed that collective bargaining could produce substantial improvements and protections. Her statement appears in the AFL-CIO’s March 28, 2024 account.

The NLRB’s 91–26 tally records whether workers wanted CWA representation in 2023. It does not report how many workers voted for or against the 2024 contract. UNI Global Union gives March 26, 2024, as the date ratification concluded, while CWA Local 9510 says workers overwhelmingly approved the tentative agreement; neither cited account supplies a ratification vote count.
