Seattle ranked sixth among 1,000 cities in Oxford Economics’ 2024 Global Cities Index, with a No. 4 finish in Economics helping lift its overall position. The result is a broad city comparison—not a ranking of economic strength alone—and Seattle placed lower in the index’s other four categories.
Seattle’s overall and category rankings
Oxford Economics’ 2024 index placed Seattle sixth overall. Its category results show how the overall position combines economic performance with measures of people, living conditions, the environment and governance.

The category positions are reported by GeekWire’s May 21, 2024 coverage; the overall result and index methodology appear in Oxford Economics’ Global Cities Index 2024. The sources cited here establish Seattle’s position in the 2024 edition, not a later edition.
What the Global Cities Index measures
Oxford Economics compares the 1,000 largest cities using economic data and public datasets. Its 2024 index combines 27 indicators across five categories. The cities represented 60% of global GDP and more than 30% of the world’s population in 2023, according to Oxford Economics.
#1 Best Overall
- Economics: GDP size and growth, GDP per person, employment growth, economic stability and economic diversity.
- Human Capital: educational attainment, universities, corporate headquarters, population growth, age profile and foreign-born population.
- Quality of Life: life expectancy, income per person, income equality, housing expenditure, recreation and cultural sites, and internet speed.
- Environment: air quality, emissions intensity, natural disasters, temperature anomalies and rainfall anomalies.
- Governance: institutions, political stability, business environment and civil liberties.
Governance indicators are measured at the national level because national governments influence those outcomes. Cities in the same country therefore receive the same score for an individual governance indicator. The overall rank is consequently a summary of the index’s selected measures and weighting—not a universal verdict on which city is best.
Why Seattle scored well in Economics
GeekWire’s account of the report attributes Seattle’s strong Economics result to the region’s technology economy, including Amazon and Microsoft, as well as major employers in aerospace, retail and other sectors such as Boeing, Starbucks, Costco and Nordstrom. The article quotes the report describing Seattle as having “one of the highest GDP per person levels in the index, and a healthy economic stability measure.”
Rank #2
The No. 4 Economics rank reflects a category broader than company presence or income alone: its indicators also include GDP growth, employment growth and economic diversity. Oxford Economics reported that, in the decade before the Covid-19 outbreak, 70% of cities outperformed their respective countries in either GDP or employment growth. That statistic describes the period specified in the report, not the current decade.
What held Seattle back in other categories
The same report’s interpretation adds important context to the strong economic showing. It says high income per person may have contributed to high income inequality, and identifies housing affordability as an increasingly prevalent issue. Those factors matter to a broad index because the Quality of Life category includes both income equality and housing expenditure.
Rank #3
For Human Capital, the report points to slower-than-expected population growth and an aging population as factors weighing on Seattle’s result. GeekWire also noted that Seattle was outside the U.S. top 10 fastest-growing big cities in Census data available at the time of its May 2024 article; that is a historical observation, not a current Census ranking.

Seattle followed New York, London, San Jose, Tokyo and Paris in the 2024 overall top six. Los Angeles, San Francisco, Melbourne and Zurich completed the top 10. Oxford Economics’ comparison illustrates that cities can reach high overall positions through different strengths: Seattle and San Francisco stand out for economic influence, while Melbourne and Zurich score better in Environment or Quality of Life.
Rank #4
That difference is useful when interpreting any overall league table. A person weighing job opportunities, housing costs, environmental conditions or civic institutions may care more about one category than the composite rank. For decisions involving personal finances, Seattle’s sixth-place overall result should not be read as evidence that it is inexpensive or equally strong across all dimensions.
