Gunn said the choice resonated because he is an actor and filmmaker himself.
Why filmmaking was Gunn’s pick
In the interview as reported by AOL, Gunn said, “I think I have to say that because I’m an actor and a filmmaker that when Kirk would make films, Films by Kirk.” He added that he did not think anyone paid Kirk for the work, but it was hard work—and, if it counted as a job, his favorite.

The preference connects Kirk’s filmmaking to Gunn’s own creative work. The character’s black-and-white short, identified by PEOPLE as “A Film by Kirk,” is a memorable example of that side of him.

AOL’s account also says Gunn initially auditioned for a one-time DSL installer role, after which creator Amy Sherman-Palladino kept bringing him back in small parts as the town’s odd-job worker. The report presents this as Gunn’s recollection of how the recurring character developed.

Gunn’s answer has varied by interview. In a 2019 interview with Conventional Relations, he said he loved playing the hockey-game announcer because he could tell jokes and sit down. The two answers emphasize different pleasures: filmmaking’s personal connection to Gunn’s work, and the announcer job’s jokes and easygoing setup. The newer answer should therefore be read as his favorite in that interview, not necessarily a single definitive choice for all time.
