It also involves the systems banks use to connect services, share data and process financial messages. Examples from the US, India and the UK show different layers of that change—not a like-for-like contest between national fintech systems.
What does fintech infrastructure include?
A financial app is the visible front end; underneath it sit services that move payments, provide authorized access to financial data, connect businesses to banks and carry messages between institutions. These layers can change independently. A new payment service does not, by itself, show that a country’s banking APIs or data-sharing arrangements have changed too.

- Payment execution: services that process payments between participants.
- Payment networks and interfaces: systems through which consumers and merchants initiate or receive payments.
- Data access: arrangements that let authorized services access financial information.
- Bank integration and messaging: APIs and financial messaging used to connect businesses, banks and transaction processes.
How do the US, India and UK examples differ?
The examples below cover different layers and evidence types. FedNow is an official US instant-payment service; UPI is NPCI’s Indian payment product; Open Banking Limited provides a UK ecosystem source; and the API and messaging changes are an example reported by one Indian bank.

| Example | Infrastructure layer and role | Scope and evidence |
|---|---|---|
| FedNow | Payment execution: an instant-payment service. | US service described by the Federal Reserve. It is one example, not a proxy for all US real-time payment activity. |
| UPI | Payment network and interface within India’s wider financial ecosystem. | NPCI’s product overview describes UPI. It should not be treated as the entirety of Indian fintech infrastructure. |
| UK open banking | Data access and open-banking ecosystem work. | Open Banking Limited’s insights archive documents ecosystem publications and activity. The available material does not provide a directly comparable adoption figure for the US or India. |
| IDFC FIRST Bank APIs and messaging | Business transaction integration and financial messaging. | The bank’s FY2026 annual report describes its own modernization; it is a single-institution example, not a national measure. |
What is changing beyond consumer payments?
Bank APIs for business transactions
IDFC FIRST Bank’s FY2026 annual report says it had more than 25 active cash-management APIs and describes integrated onboarding and transaction APIs, along with real-time visibility. These are bank-specific features for connecting transaction banking services and processes. They may be less visible to a retail customer than a payment app, but they are part of the infrastructure businesses use to interact with a bank.
#1 Best Overall
The count of more than 25 applies to the APIs reported by IDFC FIRST Bank. It does not establish how many such APIs other banks offer, or how widespread API-led transaction banking is across India.
Financial messaging modernization
The same report says IDFC FIRST Bank moved from SWIFT MT to SWIFT MX messaging aligned with ISO 20022. This is a change in the bank’s financial messaging infrastructure, not a consumer-facing payment feature. It illustrates why infrastructure modernization can happen behind a familiar banking interface: the systems that carry or structure transaction messages can change even when customers do not see a new app or chatbot.

What can a personal-finance reader conclude?
These examples help explain why a smooth payment screen is only one part of fintech. Payment services, data-sharing ecosystems, business APIs and financial messaging serve different purposes and affect different participants. A bank’s API catalogue or messaging migration can matter to its business operations without proving that a retail customer will immediately notice a change in speed, access or cost.
For a consumer, the practical question is therefore not simply whether a country has “advanced fintech.” It is which layer a particular service uses, who can access it, and what the provider says it does. The examples here do not establish specific consumer benefits, universal availability or performance comparisons across the three countries.
Rank #3
Can these examples rank the three markets?
No. The evidence covers a US payment service, an Indian payment product, a UK open-banking ecosystem source and a single Indian bank’s operational changes. Those are not matching measures of payment speed, adoption, innovation or overall fintech maturity. A defensible country ranking would require comparable metrics with consistent definitions, populations and dates; none is established by these examples.
