As of August 10, 2026, Scout Motors is real and progressing toward production—but customer deliveries are now expected in 2028, not 2026. The Volkswagen-backed American company plans to build the electric-drive Scout Traveler SUV first, followed by the Terra pickup. Initial production is targeted for 2027, while 2026 is being used for validation vehicles and manufacturing preparation.

Scout is reviving the Scout name and its off-road heritage, not bringing International Harvester back into business. Its planned vehicles will be available as pure battery-electric models and as Harvester extended-range electric vehicles, which use a gasoline engine only to generate electricity.
What is Scout Motors?
Scout Motors was founded in 2022 after Volkswagen announced plans for a separate U.S. company focused on electric pickups and rugged SUVs. Volkswagen AG is the corporate backer, but Scout presents itself as a separately managed American company with its own design, engineering, manufacturing, retail and service plans. Scout explains its Volkswagen relationship here.
#1 Best Overall
Scott Keogh is Scout’s CEO. The company’s Innovation Center is in Novi, Michigan. Its planned manufacturing operation is in Blythewood, South Carolina, and Scout selected Charlotte, North Carolina, for its corporate headquarters, where it plans to create more than 1,200 regional jobs. Scout says it controls the design, engineering and manufacturing of its vehicles, while Volkswagen contributes financial backing and automotive expertise.
Why is Scout being revived?
The original Scout was created by International Harvester as a compact utility vehicle that could serve as a work vehicle, family transporter and off-road machine. Production began in 1961 and ended on October 21, 1980. Scout Motors is using that history, along with the name, recognizable upright styling and enthusiast community, as the foundation for a new brand.
This is therefore a heritage revival rather than a corporate reunion. Volkswagen-backed Scout Motors is a new company using the Scout name and intellectual-property heritage; International Harvester itself is not returning to vehicle production. Scout’s historical retrospective covers the original vehicle’s development and legacy.
Traveler SUV and Terra pickup: the first products
| Model | Body style | Intended use | Current projected details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Traveler | Full-size SUV | Family transport, camping, adventure and towing | Up to six seats; more than 7,000 pounds of projected towing; up to 350 miles of BEV range or more than 500 miles with Harvester |
| Terra | Full-size pickup | Work, recreation, utility and towing | Up to six seats; 5.5-foot bed; more than 10,000 pounds of projected towing; up to 350 miles of BEV range or more than 500 miles with Harvester |
Scout’s current production sequence puts the Traveler first. The Traveler Harvester is expected to enter production before the other configurations, although final timing remains subject to change. As of March 2026, Scout said nearly 75% of reservations were for the Traveler and more than 85% were for Harvester-equipped vehicles.
See the Traveler product page and Terra product page for the company’s current design and feature presentation.
Are Scout vehicles truly electric?
They are all electrically driven, but the brand will not be pure-BEV-only if Harvester reaches production as planned.
The standard version is a conventional battery-electric vehicle: a large battery supplies electricity to motors that drive the wheels. Harvester is an extended-range electric vehicle, or EREV. Its wheels are still driven by electric motors, but a gasoline engine can operate as an onboard generator when the battery needs additional energy. The engine is not intended to mechanically drive the wheels like it would in a conventional hybrid.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsScout currently projects approximately 150 miles of battery-only range for Harvester models and more than 500 miles of combined range. That makes Harvester potentially useful for remote travel, towing and buyers who cannot rely on dense fast-charging coverage. The trade-off is that it adds a gasoline engine, fuel system, emissions and additional mechanical complexity to a vehicle otherwise built around electrification.
Scout has not yet published the Harvester engine’s specifications, fuel-tank size, battery capacity, horsepower, maintenance schedule or final towing ratings. Its Harvester explanation is the authoritative description of the system so far.
Platform and off-road hardware
Scout says Traveler and Terra will use a bespoke ladder-frame, body-on-frame platform rather than an existing Volkswagen vehicle platform. Planned hardware includes:
- Four-wheel drive with an electric drive unit on each axle.
- A solid rear axle.
- Front and rear mechanical locking differentials.
- Available 35-inch tires.
- A front sway-bar disconnect.
- More than 12 inches of projected ground clearance.
- Nearly three feet of projected water-fording capability.
- Physical controls and mechanical door handles.
These features suggest that Scout is targeting traditional off-road buyers as well as EV shoppers. However, they remain manufacturer projections and design targets. Final production hardware, trim availability and independent testing are still pending. Scout’s 2024 vehicle reveal contains the current announced technical direction.

Charging, battery and software
Scout has announced an NACS charge port, CCS charging through an adapter, an 800-volt electrical architecture, planned bidirectional charging and charging capability of up to 350 kW in the 2024 reveal. The vehicles are also expected to work with broad public-charging networks, including Tesla Superchargers where compatibility and access allow.
These are announced targets, not a complete charging specification. Scout has not disclosed usable battery capacity, battery chemistry, charging curves or production charge times. It also does not plan to operate a standalone Scout charging network; instead, it expects to integrate charging partners. Details are expected closer to production. See Scout’s high-voltage architecture FAQ, battery FAQ and charging-time FAQ.
Scout vehicles will use the zonal electronics architecture developed through the Volkswagen–Rivian joint venture. Scout says its own Community UX, physical controls and vehicle design will remain distinct. This relationship concerns software and electronic architecture; it does not mean Traveler and Terra are rebadged Rivians or use a Rivian chassis.
Over-the-air updates and remote diagnostics are planned. Final driver-assistance and autonomy features have not been specified. Scout’s explanation of the Rivian relationship provides the current distinction.
Price: what the $60,000 target actually means
Scout currently targets a retail price below $60,000 for both Traveler and Terra. The original reveal described entry pricing of approximately $50,000 with available incentives, including a Terra entry target of $51,500 with available incentives.
Those are targets, not final transaction prices. Scout has not published final MSRP, trim levels, option pricing, destination charges, taxes, financing terms or incentive eligibility. Government tax credits and other incentives may also change before customer deliveries begin. Scout says incentives available at the time of sale may vary.

The eventual purchase cost could depend heavily on battery choice, Harvester equipment, off-road options, destination fees, insurance, home-charging installation and the state where the vehicle is purchased and registered.
Should you pay the $100 reservation fee?
Reservations are currently available in the United States and Canada. The fee is $100 in the U.S. and $150 Canadian dollars in Canada. A reservation is not a preorder, does not guarantee a purchase, does not lock the final price and does not guarantee a delivery date.
Scout says U.S. reservations are refundable until they become configured vehicle orders. U.S. refunds typically take three to five business days. Once a reservation becomes a configured order, it may become non-refundable under the applicable terms. Read the reservation rules and refund policy before paying.
You can currently change between Traveler and Terra and between BEV and Harvester without losing your queue position, although the change may affect delivery timing. Scout does not currently show customers their precise place in line.

In April 2026, CEO Scott Keogh reportedly said Scout had approximately 160,000 reservations. That figure should be understood as a company-leader statement reported by the media, not as an audited order book. Reservations may not convert into completed sales. SAE Mobilus reported Keogh’s comment.
Factory progress: real construction, but not customer production yet
Scout’s Blythewood, South Carolina, Production Center represents a planned $2 billion investment. The project covers roughly 1,100 acres within a larger approximately 1,600-acre site and is designed for as many as 200,000 vehicles per year at full capacity.
The planned facility includes a Body Shop, Paint Shop, Final Assembly, training facilities and a supplier park. Scout separately announced an additional $300 million supplier-park investment, expected to support approximately 1,000 supplier jobs. The company projects more than 4,000 permanent jobs at the production operation.
A $25 million Training Center opened in 2026. Scout said it had hired more than 600 people in South Carolina and almost 1,400 company-wide by the training-center announcement. In June, Scout announced its first welded Traveler body for manufacturing validation. By July, prototype-production activities were underway, and the company named Todd Johnson as vice president of manufacturing.
These are meaningful manufacturing milestones, but a welded validation body is not a customer vehicle. Validation, supplier qualification, regulatory testing, production-ramp work and final quality checks still stand between factory preparation and volume deliveries.
Scout’s June factory update, July manufacturing announcement and Training Center announcement provide the latest official progress.
Current Scout launch timeline
| Date | Milestone |

| 1961 | International Harvester Scout enters production. |
| 1980 | Original Scout production ends. |
| May 2022 | Volkswagen announces a separate U.S. company for electric pickups and rugged SUVs. |
| March 2023 | Scout selects Blythewood, South Carolina, for a planned $2 billion production center. |
| February 2024 | Production-center groundbreaking. |
| October 2024 | Traveler and Terra production-intent concepts are revealed and reservations open. |
| November 2025 | Volkswagen–Rivian joint venture reports progress on Scout reference vehicles and software testing. |
| November 2025 | Charlotte is selected as Scout’s corporate headquarters. |
| March 2026 | Scout confirms Traveler first, a 2027 initial-production target and expected 2028 customer deliveries. |
| April–May 2026 | Training Center opens and workforce training begins. |
| June 2026 | First welded Traveler body is completed for validation. |
| July 2026 | Scout announces prototype-production activity and appoints Todd Johnson as manufacturing chief. |
Some 2026 reports suggested the launch could slip until 2028 because of technical and financial issues. Scout responded that its initial-production target remains 2027. The apparent conflict is resolved by separating milestones: validation vehicles are expected in 2026, initial production is targeted for 2027, and customer deliveries are expected in 2028. Further delay reports should be treated as unconfirmed unless Scout or Volkswagen formally changes the schedule.
Direct sales and service: the biggest unresolved business issue
Scout plans to sell directly to customers rather than through Volkswagen dealers. Its proposed ownership model includes an app-based purchasing and ownership journey, Scout retail stores and service Workshops.
The company plans approximately 100 retail locations across the U.S. and Canada by 2032, along with 100 Workshops. Scout says more than 85% of Workshops would be within 200 miles of targeted buyers and that approximately 80% of repairs would be handled through mobile or non-Workshop service. These are future plans, not an operating service network today.
The model is legally contested. South Carolina direct-sales legislation stalled in 2025, even though the state is hosting Scout’s factory. South Carolina law also creates challenges for manufacturer-owned service operations.

Dealer groups argue that Scout is effectively a Volkswagen affiliate trying to bypass existing Volkswagen and Audi franchise dealers. Scout argues that it is an independent, separately managed company with a separate brand.
Current litigation includes:
- In March 2026, a California federal court denied part of defendants’ motions to dismiss, allowing the California New Car Dealers Association challenge to continue. Read the federal court order.
- Florida Volkswagen and Audi dealers filed a complaint alleging that Scout’s reservation and deposit system violates Florida dealer law. Read the Florida complaint.
- The Washington State Auto Dealers Association filed a June 2026 lawsuit challenging Scout’s direct-sales plans.
Scout says people may reserve from states that do not currently permit direct automotive sales, but the eventual purchase and service process may depend on state law and litigation outcomes. A reservation therefore does not guarantee that the buying experience will be identical everywhere in the U.S. or Canada.

South Carolina incentives and the reported $150 million overrun
South Carolina approved approximately $1.3 billion in incentives connected to the Scout project. In 2026, state officials sought an additional $150 million after site-preparation cost overruns. Reporting attributed approximately $72 million of that overrun to wetlands mitigation.
The additional money was described as funding state contractors and site work, not as a direct payment to Scout Motors. It is inaccurate to summarize the story as “Scout’s factory is $150 million over budget.” The verified issue concerns South Carolina’s infrastructure and site-preparation obligations, including wetlands, roads, utilities and related work. AP reported on the incentives, while The State covered the overrun context.

Secondary reports have circulated a 5,000-pound Harvester towing figure, but Scout’s own support material says final towing figures for all configurations remain pending. That number should not be treated as finalized.
Traveler or Terra: which makes more sense?
Choose the Traveler if you need enclosed cargo space, up to six seats, family practicality or an SUV layout for camping and recreation. It is the first vehicle planned for production, which may also make it the earliest path into Scout ownership.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Choose the Terra if you need a 5.5-foot bed, job-site utility or the highest projected towing capacity. Its longer body and pickup layout may be more useful for equipment and recreational loads, but the final payload and towing figures will depend on configuration.
BEV or Harvester: which powertrain makes financial sense?
The BEV is the simpler choice for drivers who can charge at home and whose regular travel fits within the available electric range. It avoids gasoline-engine maintenance and can provide the lower operating cost typically associated with home-charged electricity, although Scout has not published energy-consumption figures.
Harvester may be worth considering for long-distance or remote use where charging access is uncertain. It offers a projected 150 miles of battery-only driving before the gasoline generator becomes relevant and more than 500 miles of combined range. However, it will likely have more drivetrain components and fuel-related maintenance than the pure BEV. Scout has not released enough information to calculate the total-cost difference.
Should you reserve now or wait?
Reserving may make sense if you want a place in the queue, are comfortable with an uncertain 2028 delivery and can treat $100 as a refundable holding fee rather than a purchase commitment.
Waiting is more sensible if your decision depends on EPA range, final battery capacity, confirmed towing numbers, tax-credit eligibility, exact pricing, independent testing or a settled service and sales pathway in your state.

The most important financial point is that the reservation does not lock the price. Before converting it into a configured order, compare the final vehicle price with insurance, charging installation, financing costs, registration, expected fuel use for Harvester models and the availability of service near your home.
Bottom line
Scout Motors is a genuine Volkswagen-backed attempt to rebuild the American Scout identity around electrically driven trucks and SUVs. The Traveler and Terra have ambitious off-road hardware, range and towing targets, and the Blythewood factory effort has moved beyond announcements into training, validation and prototype-production work.
But the buyer-facing story is still unfinished. Deliveries are expected in 2028, the figures remain projections, Harvester is not a pure EV, pricing is not locked, and Scout’s direct-sales and service model is facing lawsuits. The $100 reservation buys a place in line—not a guaranteed vehicle, price or delivery date.
