Contemporaneous reports said Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds had no prenuptial agreement and that their marital property and earnings were divided equally when their divorce became final in 2011. The reports do not identify specific assets or establish that Johansson received more than Reynolds, so “held her own” is best understood as a characterization—not a documented finding about the settlement.

What was reported about the settlement?

On July 1, 2011, TMZ reported that neither Johansson nor Reynolds sought spousal support and that property and earnings accumulated during their marriage were divided 50/50. That is the clearest published account of the financial outcome in the sources reviewed.

The report does not provide the complete settlement document or an itemized asset schedule. It therefore does not establish the value of the property, which person retained particular assets, or the precise terms of the final settlement. The coverage supports an equal reported division—not a claim that Johansson “won,” received more, or secured a particular asset.

TMZ’s July 1, 2011 report is the source for the reported equal division and the statement that neither party sought spousal support.

Did Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds have a prenup?

Contemporaneous reports said they did not. In its December 2010 coverage, TMZ attributed that claim to sources; its July 2011 report also stated there was no prenup. The available coverage does not show an independent review of the complete court file, so the claim should be attributed to those reports rather than presented as a detail verified from the full settlement record.

No prenup and an equal division are separate points: the first concerns whether the couple had a premarital agreement, while the second is TMZ’s account of how their marital property and earnings were divided. The reporting does not explain the legal mechanics or provide enough detail to infer more.

Did either of them receive spousal support?

TMZ reported in December 2010 that neither party requested spousal support, and its July 2011 report said neither sought it. These reports describe the parties’ requests; they do not supply a complete account of every term in the final settlement.

When did the divorce happen?

  • 2008: TMZ’s 2011 report gives the year the couple married.
  • December 2010: They announced their separation. TMZ’s filing coverage gives December 14 as the separation date and reported that the divorce petition and response were filed at the same time. That initial report said property rights were still to be determined.
  • July 1, 2011: A Los Angeles judge finalized the divorce, according to a CBS News report from the Associated Press citing court records.

CBS News’ Associated Press report identifies July 1, 2011, as the finalization date. The change from property rights being undetermined in TMZ’s December 2010 report to an equal division in its July 2011 account reflects the timeline of the coverage; it does not reveal the full negotiations or documents.

What does “held her own” mean here?

The available reporting supports the narrower conclusion that the couple reportedly divided marital property and earnings equally. It does not provide comparative asset values or show that Johansson obtained a financial advantage. Without an itemized schedule or the full settlement terms, a stronger claim about who came out ahead cannot be substantiated.

Reynolds later described the media narrative around the breakup in an interview for Details: “There was no story and no scandal, so the narrative was just created for me.” As CBS News reported in May 2011, he was discussing media coverage and the private breakup—not the financial terms of the settlement.

What the reporting establishes—and what it does not

  • Reported: No prenup; neither party sought spousal support; marital property and earnings were divided equally, according to contemporaneous TMZ reports.
  • Confirmed through court-record reporting: The divorce was finalized in Los Angeles on July 1, 2011, according to the Associated Press report published by CBS News.
  • Not disclosed in the sources reviewed: An itemized division of property, asset values, specific assets retained by either person, or the complete terms of the settlement.

For readers considering the story as a personal-finance example, the practical limit is important: a reported equal division is not enough information to determine the couple’s overall financial positions after divorce.
