Saxo is usually the stronger choice for investors and experienced traders who want a broad range of shares, ETFs, bonds, funds, options and futures in one account. IG is generally the better fit for traders who prioritise spread betting, CFDs, a simpler trading experience and a well-known UK-focused platform.
Your country matters before anything else. Saxo and IG operate through different legal entities, and the available markets, tax wrappers, leverage, dealing fees and investor protection can change by residence. The comparison below focuses mainly on the features commonly available to UK clients, while highlighting where the conclusion may differ internationally.
Quick verdict
| What you want to do | Better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Buy and hold shares and ETFs | Saxo | Typically offers a broader investment and exchange-traded product range, although dealing and custody charges need checking. |
| Trade forex, indices or commodities with CFDs | IG | IG has a particularly mature CFD offering and a straightforward trading workflow. |
| Use spread betting in the UK | IG | Spread betting is a core IG product and can be tax-efficient for eligible UK residents. |
| Trade options, futures or bonds | Saxo | Saxo is generally more investment-bank-like in its instrument range and market access. |
| Use a broad set of professional charting and trading tools | Either, depending on strategy | SaxoTrader offers depth and multi-asset functionality; IG offers strong charting and widely used integrations. |
| Keep the account simple | IG | Its core trading products are easier to understand than a multi-asset account containing complex instruments. |
For a long-term portfolio, Saxo deserves the closer look. For active leveraged trading, especially spread betting, IG is usually the more natural starting point. Neither broker should be selected on headline spreads alone.
Saxo and IG are not interchangeable businesses
Saxo began as a specialist trading and investment platform with a strong emphasis on multi-asset market access. Depending on the local entity, clients may be able to trade listed shares, ETFs, bonds, mutual funds, forex, CFDs, options, futures and other derivatives.

IG is best known for leveraged trading: spread betting and CFDs on forex, indices, shares, commodities, interest rates and other markets. In some countries it also offers share dealing, investment accounts and tax-advantaged wrappers. The non-leveraged investment range is not identical in every jurisdiction.
That distinction matters. A broker can be excellent for short-term trading but unsuitable as the only home for a retirement portfolio. Conversely, a platform with thousands of instruments may be unnecessary if you only buy a global equity ETF once a month.
Product range and market access
Saxo: broader for sophisticated investors
Saxo is the more compelling option if you want to combine several types of investment in one account. Its platform is designed to support instruments that many mainstream trading apps do not offer, including listed options, futures and a wide selection of bonds.
This can be valuable when you need to:
- Buy shares on overseas exchanges;
- Build an ETF portfolio across several regions;
- Trade government or corporate bonds;
- Use options for hedging or defined-risk strategies;
- Trade futures rather than a broker-created CFD; or
- Hold investments and trading positions on the same platform.
The trade-off is complexity. A wider catalogue also means more product screens, contract specifications, exchange fees and suitability considerations. Some instruments may require additional permissions or a higher level of trading experience.

IG: stronger for leveraged markets
IG’s main strength is its trading range for leveraged products. UK clients commonly encounter spread betting and CFDs covering major forex pairs, stock indices, individual shares, commodities and other markets. The exact list depends on the account and the market being traded.
Spread betting and CFDs let you gain exposure without buying the underlying asset. They also permit leverage, which magnifies both gains and losses. A position requiring only a fraction of its full market value can still lose more quickly than a cash investment if the market moves against you.
IG may also offer share dealing, ISAs or similar investment products in selected markets. Do not assume that the existence of an IG investment account means every CFD market is available in the same account, or that the same account types exist outside the UK.
Fees: compare the whole transaction
Saxo and IG charge in different ways, so a single “cheapest broker” claim is unreliable.

| Cost | What to check at Saxo | What to check at IG |
|---|---|---|
| Buying shares or ETFs | Commission by exchange, minimum ticket charge, currency conversion and possible custody fee. | Share-dealing commission, foreign-exchange conversion and any account or custody charge. |
| CFD or spread-bet trade | Spread, commission on share CFDs, overnight financing and guaranteed-stop charges. | Spread, share-CFD commission, overnight funding and guaranteed-stop charges. |
| Forex | Quoted spread, financing adjustment and conversion cost. | Quoted spread, financing adjustment and conversion cost. |
| Holding investments | Custody or platform fee, if applicable to the local account. | Account, custody or administration fee, if applicable. |
| Moving money | Deposit, withdrawal, bank-transfer and currency-conversion terms. | Deposit, withdrawal, bank-transfer and currency-conversion terms. |
Before choosing, price the trade you actually expect to make. A useful calculation is:
Total cost = dealing commission + bid/offer spread + currency conversion + exchange or regulatory charges + financing or custody costs
For example, a cheap-looking commission on a US share may be outweighed by an expensive currency conversion if you regularly buy small sterling-to-dollar trades. For a leveraged position held overnight, financing can matter more than the opening spread.
Spread betting, CFDs and investing are different
UK spread betting can be attractive because profits are generally free of capital gains tax for ordinary personal accounts, and trades do not normally attract stamp duty. Tax treatment can change with legislation and personal circumstances, and losses generally cannot be used in the same way as losses from an investment portfolio.
Recommended Free Tools
CFDs provide leveraged exposure but are not ownership of the share, fund or index. They can incur overnight funding and may have a commission when trading individual shares. Most retail CFD accounts lose money, and the FCA requires firms to display risk warnings for that reason.
Buying a share or ETF in a dealing account is a different proposition. You own the asset, or an interest in the fund, and normally pay the full purchase price rather than margin. That does not remove investment risk: the value can still fall, and overseas assets add currency risk.
Do not compare the tax treatment of an IG spread bet with the fees on a Saxo share purchase as though they were competing versions of the same product. They are different financial activities.
Platforms and usability
SaxoTrader
SaxoTrader is built for multi-asset use. It generally provides detailed instrument information, advanced charts, order types, portfolio views and access to multiple asset classes from one interface. This suits investors who want to inspect a bond, compare ETFs or manage options alongside shares.

The downside is a steeper learning curve. A new investor may find contract details, expiry dates, margin requirements and exchange-specific order rules more demanding than a basic share-dealing app.
IG’s web and mobile platforms
IG’s web platform and mobile app are familiar to active traders. They typically make it easy to search markets, view charts, place orders and monitor open leveraged positions. IG also supports popular third-party tools in some jurisdictions, including MetaTrader and TradingView connectivity, although availability and account compatibility should be checked before opening an account.
IG’s simplicity is an advantage for a trader who wants to follow a watchlist of forex pairs or indices. It is less of a differentiator for someone who needs access to a large selection of listed bonds, options and futures.
Safety, regulation and account protection
Both firms operate through multiple regulated entities. The relevant entity is the one named in your account-opening documents, not necessarily the brand’s headquarters or the entity discussed in an online review.
Check four things before depositing money:
- Regulator: confirm the firm appears on your national regulator’s register.
- Client-money rules: understand whether cash is segregated and how the firm treats collateral.
- Compensation scheme: check the applicable scheme and its limits for your country.
- Product protection: understand whether your account is an investment account, a derivative account or both.
Regulation does not protect you from a falling share price or a leveraged trading loss. It governs the firm’s conduct, capital and handling of client assets; it is not a guarantee of investment performance.
Account choice: which broker suits which person?
Choose Saxo if:
- You want shares, ETFs, bonds, options and futures in one established platform;
- You trade overseas markets often enough for market access to matter;
- You understand the difference between cash investing, margin and derivatives;
- You want more detailed multi-asset research and order functionality; or
- You are building a sizeable portfolio and have compared custody and currency costs carefully.
Choose IG if:
- Your main interest is spread betting or CFDs;
- You trade forex, indices or commodities actively;
- You want a simpler route into leveraged markets;
- You value IG’s charting, alerts and trading education; or
- You want to keep spread betting separate from a conventional investment portfolio.
Consider neither as your first choice if:
- You only need a low-cost stocks-and-shares ISA for a handful of funds;
- You are not comfortable with leverage or overnight financing;
- You need a very small regular-investment facility and either broker’s dealing minimums make it uneconomic; or
- You are choosing solely because an advertisement shows a very low minimum spread.
How to make the comparison before opening an account
- Enter your country of residence and identify the exact legal entity serving you.
- Decide whether you need ownership of investments, spread betting, CFDs or a combination.
- List the instruments you will actually trade, including the exchange and currency.
- Request or calculate the full cost for a typical trade, a typical monthly holding and an overnight leveraged position.
- Check account minimums, withdrawal rules, inactivity or custody charges and available tax wrappers.
- Open a demo account if you are considering leveraged trading, and test order placement before risking money.
Also read the broker’s current tariff rather than relying on a comparison table copied from an older review. Fees change, and a charge may apply only to a particular country, account type or exchange.
FAQ
Is Saxo better than IG for long-term investing?
Usually, Saxo is the stronger fit for investors who need broad access to shares, ETFs, bonds and other exchange-traded products. IG may still be suitable if its local investment account and pricing meet your needs. Compare custody, dealing and currency-conversion charges before deciding.
Is IG cheaper than Saxo?
Not across every product. IG may be competitive for spread betting and CFD trading, while Saxo may be more suitable for certain shares, ETFs, bonds or options. The answer depends on trade size, exchange, holding period, currency and financing.

Which broker is better for beginners?
IG is often easier for a beginner interested in basic trading because its core platform is relatively direct. Saxo can also serve beginners buying shares or ETFs, but its wider range of complex products requires more care. Beginners should avoid leveraged products until they understand margin and overnight funding.
Can I use Saxo or IG for an ISA?
Availability depends on your country and the specific local entity. UK clients should check each broker’s current ISA offering, eligible investments, charges and transfer rules directly. An account available in the UK may not exist for residents elsewhere.
Does Saxo offer spread betting?
Saxo’s product range varies by jurisdiction, but it is generally associated with multi-asset investing and trading rather than being a specialist spread-betting provider. UK traders specifically seeking spread betting will usually find IG the more direct comparison.
Which is safer, Saxo or IG?
Both operate regulated businesses, but protection depends on the legal entity, product and country. Confirm the regulator, client-money arrangements and compensation scheme shown in your own account documents. Regulation cannot prevent market losses.
Can I hold shares and trade CFDs with the same broker?
Potentially, but the account structure differs by jurisdiction. Check whether the broker separates investment and derivative accounts, how cash is allocated, and whether the products have different charges and protections.
The Bottom Line
Pick Saxo for breadth; pick IG for leveraged trading. Saxo is the better all-round candidate for an experienced investor who wants international shares, ETFs, bonds, options or futures and is prepared to compare a detailed fee schedule. IG is the better fit for a trader whose priority is spread betting, CFDs, forex, indices and a simpler active-trading platform.
For either broker, confirm the local legal entity and price a realistic trade before opening an account. The cheapest headline spread, the largest market count and the best-known brand do not, by themselves, determine the lowest-cost or safest choice.
