Those were advertised rates from a secondary listing—not a government ranking or a guarantee that every saver qualified. The FDIC’s 0.41% national average for January was published later in the month and measures something different.
Which savings accounts were listed at 5.00% APY on January 3?
A January 3, 2025 listing reported three savings accounts at 5.00% APY. The terms shown varied, so the rates were not interchangeable. The listing was secondary and did not claim to audit every account available nationwide.
| Account | Reported APY | Terms reported on January 3, 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Pibank Savings | 5.00% | No minimum or minimum opening deposit was shown; the rate was not guaranteed. (January 3 listing) |
| Roger Bank Savings | 5.00% | Required an active Roger checking account. (January 3 listing) |
| ZYNLO Bank Tomorrow Savings | 5.00% | $0.01 minimum balance and $10 opening deposit. (January 3 listing) |
The listing also noted that a 5.10% APY online promotion for Bank of Hope High Yield Savings was no longer available by January 3, even though its landing page remained active. It should not be counted as an available offer for that date. (January 3 listing)
Why the January 2025 national average was much lower
The FDIC’s January 2025 national savings deposit rate was 0.41%, based on the $2,500 product tier. The FDIC table was revised January 21, so it is a later monthly benchmark, not a January 3 quote. It reports a weighted average of rates at insured depository institutions and credit unions for which data were available; it does not rank the highest advertised accounts. (FDIC national rates)

Other figures are also not direct comparisons with the January 3 offers. Bankrate’s FRED-hosted series reports a 0.47% annual average savings APY for 2025, based on a survey of ten large institutions in ten large U.S. markets, with bank and thrift rates weighted equally. NCUA reported fourth-quarter 2025 averages of 0.19% at credit unions and 0.32% at banks. These later annual and quarterly figures provide context, not a substitute for a dated offer list.
Product type and term matter too. Tremont Bank’s rates effective January 3, 2025 included 4.05% APY on a seven-month CD and 0.05% APY on Basic Savings. A CD commits funds for a stated term and may impose an early-withdrawal penalty; it is not the same product as an accessible savings account. What to compare before choosing a savings account
A headline APY matters only alongside the conditions that determine whether you can earn it and use the account as intended. Check the institution’s rate sheet and account disclosure on the day you apply; a current webpage may show a changed rate or omit rates for your location.
- Rate and how long it applies: Savings APYs are generally variable, not locked for a term. U.S. Bank says savings rates can change at the bank’s discretion; APY reflects compounding. (U.S. Bank savings-rate FAQ)
- Eligibility and relationship requirements: Confirm whether the rate requires another account, a qualifying balance, or specific activity. For example, the January 3 listing tied Roger Bank’s reported rate to an active checking account; relationship rate bumps at other banks may have qualifying-product or balance conditions.
- Opening deposit, minimum balance, and fees: A low opening minimum does not necessarily mean every balance earns the advertised APY. Review balance tiers and monthly fees in the disclosures.
- Access to funds: Consider withdrawal options and timing, particularly if the money is for emergencies or a near-term expense. A CD can restrict access or charge a penalty for early withdrawal.
- Account type and insurance: Verify whether the product is an FDIC-insured bank deposit, an insured credit-union share account, or an investment. A money-market deposit account is not a money-market mutual fund; mutual funds are not FDIC-insured. Confirm the institution and account’s coverage and keep balances within applicable ownership-category limits. (AP cash options explainer)
How to use this dated rate snapshot
For January 3, the useful takeaway is that selected listed savings offers reached 5.00% APY, while eligibility and minimum requirements differed. The listing is a historical snapshot, not evidence of rates available now. Do not use a current account page to reconstruct a past rate, or a national average to identify the best individual offer on a specific day.
