To get a Sarkari Naukri, choose a specific post that fits your qualifications and circumstances, check its current official recruitment notice, apply through the portal named there, and prepare for the selection stages that notice describes. There is no single application system or eligibility rule for all government jobs in India.

What “Sarkari Naukri” means

“Sarkari naukri” is a broad term for government employment, not one exam or recruitment programme. Central-government routes include examinations and direct recruitment through the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), examinations and selection posts through the Staff Selection Commission (SSC), and Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) notifications. Ministries and departments may also publish their own vacancies. State public service commissions, state departments, local bodies, public-sector entities and uniformed services can have separate recruiting authorities and rules.

The National Career Service (NCS) government-vacancy directory can help you find relevant recruitment pages, but confirm every vacancy on the employer’s or recruiting authority’s own website. Start with the post and employer, not a general promise of a “government job.”

Where to find genuine government job notifications

  • UPSC: Check its examination calendar, active examination notices, recruitment advertisements and online application portal. Its site also provides previous question papers, revised schemes and syllabi, and cut-off information: UPSC official website.
  • SSC: Use the official SSC portal for examination notices, its calendar, eligibility and qualification details, syllabi, previous papers and application instructions. SSC requires one-time registration before applying: SSC official website.
  • Railways: Check the official RRB or Railway Recruitment Cell website and the exact Centralised Employment Notification for the post. Recruitment stages and requirements are notification-specific: Indian Railways official website.
  • Other central vacancies: Use the NCS government-vacancy directory to locate a department’s recruitment page, then verify the opening on that department’s site: National Career Service.

Search results, social media, coaching sites and vacancy aggregators may point you toward an opening, but they are not the final authority. Before entering personal details or paying an application fee, verify the advertisement number, post title, dates, eligibility, fee and application address in the full official notice.

For example, UPSC’s calendar page listed the Annual Calendar 2027 as uploaded on 20 May 2026. Calendar dates can be tentative or revised, so use the latest official notice for the examination you are considering: UPSC examination calendar.

Check eligibility in the exact notification

There is no universal age limit, education requirement or experience rule for Sarkari Naukri. Requirements depend on the post and recruitment cycle; a previous year’s notice may no longer apply. Before deciding to apply, check each item in the current advertisement and its annexures:

  • Required education, subjects, marks, technical credentials or work experience.
  • Age range and the date on which age is calculated.
  • Category-based age relaxation, if offered, and the required certificate format and validity.
  • Nationality or domicile requirements, where applicable.
  • Physical, medical, language, typing or other skill requirements, if applicable.
  • Whether the opening is open recruitment, a departmental examination, direct recruitment or another route.
  • Application fee, accepted payment method, closing date and any correction window.

Keep certificates in the format the notice specifies, and resolve discrepancies in your name, date of birth or records before the application closes.

How to apply for a government job

  1. Choose a realistic target. Compare the post’s qualification, duties, location, exam format and eligibility with your situation. If you are considering more than one route, compare the time required, exam subjects and stages, language or physical requirements, and the work involved. Do not assume one route is easier based on unsupported claims about selection odds.
  2. Read the complete notification. Note the advertisement number, post and vacancy details, important dates, eligibility cut-off, selection stages, fee and official application address.
  3. Prepare your documents. Follow the notice’s requirements for your personal details, education records, photograph, signature and certificates. Check that uploaded files meet the stated specifications.
  4. Register and apply on the named portal. For SSC examinations, complete the required one-time registration before submitting an application. UPSC examination applications are made through its designated application portal. Use the link in the official notice rather than an unverified message or search advertisement.
  5. Review before final submission. Check your category, post preferences, exam centre, uploaded files and payment status. Save the submitted application confirmation and any payment receipt.
  6. Track official updates. Check the recruiting authority’s website for admit cards, schedule changes, answer keys, results, document verification and final instructions. A calendar or earlier notice may change.

Prepare for the selection process in your notice

There is no single selection sequence for government jobs. Depending on the post, selection may involve a written or computer-based examination, an interview, typing or other skill tests, an aptitude or physical test, document verification, a medical check, or a combination of stages. Follow the sequence and conditions in your own recruitment notice; another exam’s process is not a reliable guide.

Build preparation around the current official scheme and syllabus for the specific examination. UPSC and SSC publish examination resources, including previous papers and syllabus information, on their official sites. Use past papers to learn the question style and practise timing, then review mistakes. Include practice for every relevant stage, such as descriptive writing, interviews, typing, aptitude, physical tests or technical skills, where the notice requires them. Mock tests can support practice, but they do not override the official syllabus or notice.

A book of previous-year papers or an exam-specific practice guide is optional. Check that its edition matches the current scheme, and compare it with free official materials. No paid course, coaching service or product can guarantee selection.

Recognise and avoid recruitment fraud

NCS says its registration, job application and interview-processing services are free, and warns job seekers not to pay fees to employers. Treat claims of guaranteed direct joining without a selection process, employer registration charges, implausibly high pay for simple work, or messages from personal email addresses claiming to represent major organisations as warning signs.

  • Verify the vacancy and contact details through the recruiting authority’s official website.
  • Do not pay a purported employer for a job or share sensitive identity or banking information with an unverified contact.
  • If a message claims to be from NCS, check its fraud guidance and use official contact details: NCS frequently asked questions.

NCS lists its toll-free helpline as 1514 and says cyber fraud can be reported at 1930. Its fraud guidance is available at NCS jobseeker fraud guidance.
