Re:

Samsung T7 Shield 1TB at $99.99: Was the 41% Deal Real, and Is It Still Available?

The $99.99 Samsung T7 Shield deal was real in June 2024, but it is not verified as live now. Here’s what the 1TB SSD offers and when it’s worth buying.

The Samsung T7 Shield 1TB really was advertised for $99.99 in a June 17, 2024 Amazon deal—$70 below its stated $169.99 list price, or about 41% off. That price is historical, not a verified current offer: the deal cannot be confirmed as live, and Samsung’s U.S. product page showed $287.99 when checked for this article. If $99.99 returns, the Shield is a compelling buy for someone who needs a rugged 1TB SSD; at a much higher price, compare alternatives first.

What was the 41% discount?

The original Phandroid report, published June 17, 2024, described the 1TB Samsung T7 Shield at Amazon for $99.99, down from a stated $169.99 list-price reference. That is $70 off, and the calculation is ($169.99 − $99.99) ÷ $169.99 = 41.18%. PCWorld separately reported the 1TB model at about $100 against a $170 MSRP in May 2025, but that later report does not establish a current offer.

The percentage is mathematically sound, but it uses the stated list price—not proof that $169.99 was the product’s usual street price. The headline deal concerned the 1TB model, not the 2TB or 4TB versions. Read the original June 2024 deal report or PCWorld’s May 2025 report.

Is the $99.99 deal available now?

No current $99.99 offer is verified here. Samsung’s U.S. page showed $287.99 for the 1TB model in the available pricing information, but retailer availability and prices can vary by location and change over time. That observed Samsung price is not a market-wide price check or evidence of a live discount. Check the retailer’s current listing, stock, seller, condition, exact 1TB SKU, shipping, tax, coupons, and warranty before buying.

Rugged, but not waterproof for immersion

IP65 means the enclosure is rated for dust protection and resistance to water jets; it is not a rating for unrestricted immersion. Treat the connector and its cover as vulnerable points: keep the port protected from moisture and debris, and do not use the drive while wet. Samsung’s 3m drop rating applies to its stated test conditions, not every impact or real-world accident. Neither rating guarantees that stored data will survive damage.

  • Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)

  • Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
  • Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
  • From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.

Fast on a compatible connection

Samsung’s read and write figures are “up to” sequential speeds, not a promise for every transfer. The drive cannot use its maximum connection speed if the computer’s port, cable, hub, or dock is slower. USB-C describes a connector shape, not a guaranteed data rate. Small-file and random workloads, a nearly full or hot drive, file-system overhead, encryption software, or a slow source drive can also reduce transfer speed. Confirm the host connection supports 10Gbps USB and test the complete setup before relying on the drive for a demanding video workflow.

Who should consider it—and who should pass?

It makes sense if

  • You travel or work in dusty, splash-prone settings and want more enclosure protection than a basic portable SSD offers.
  • You move large photo, video, or work files between computers with compatible USB ports.
  • You want an external drive for a selection of PC or console games, after checking the platform’s storage and game-running rules.
  • You want an extra copy of files and will keep another backup elsewhere.

Look elsewhere if

  • Your main goal is the lowest cost per terabyte for bulk storage; a hard drive may be more economical.
  • You routinely need more than 1TB for game libraries, video projects, or backups.
  • Your devices have only slow USB connections, so you cannot make practical use of the SSD’s faster interface.
  • You need Thunderbolt, USB4, or USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 performance; the T7 Shield’s stated interface is USB 3.2 Gen 2 at 10Gbps.
  • You need a drive rated for submersion or sustained heavy writes without first checking independent testing for your workload.

Is 1TB enough?

Samsung defines capacity in decimal units: 1TB is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. After the operating system’s unit conversion and formatting, the available figure will look smaller. One terabyte can suit documents, photos, moderate video projects, or a curated selection of games, but 4K footage, multiple system images, and large game collections can consume it quickly. If you expect to keep substantial free space or your library is growing, compare the 2TB price before choosing the smaller drive; a lower upfront price is poor value if you soon need another purchase.

Price and purchase checks

At or below $99.99, a new, correctly identified 1TB T7 Shield is compelling for buyers who value its rugged enclosure and need 1TB. At a substantially higher price, compare the current price of the standard Samsung T7, the T9, and other rugged SSDs rather than treating the old 41% figure as a reason to buy. The T7 family and T9 are listed on Samsung’s U.S. portable SSD page; the T9’s higher-performance positioning is useful only with compatible USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 hardware, while a standard T7 may suit buyers who do not need the Shield’s rugged protection.

Compatibility, formatting, and safe setup

Match the drive to the device

The included USB-C-to-A cable can connect to an older USB-A system, but the port still sets the connection speed. Hubs and docks can limit or share bandwidth. Phones and tablets may require USB OTG support and sufficient power. Consoles can impose their own requirements, including reformatting and restrictions on running games from external storage. Check the device maker’s compatibility guidance for your particular hardware.

Choose a file system with your devices in mind

exFAT is generally convenient for exchanging files between Windows and macOS. NTFS and APFS may be preferable for platform-specific use, but can make cross-platform access less convenient. Formatting erases the drive, so copy off any existing files and verify that the destination device supports your chosen file system before reformatting.

Use encryption deliberately

AES 256-bit hardware encryption is a feature, not proof that files are automatically password-protected. Configure Samsung’s security functionality if you want password protection, and keep a secure record of the password: losing it may make protected data inaccessible. Encryption does not provide another copy if the drive is lost, damaged, or fails.

Why the SSD should not be your only backup

A portable SSD is useful for backup storage, but one copy on one drive is not a backup strategy. For irreplaceable files, keep another copy on a separate device or in a separate location. A 3-2-1-style approach—multiple copies, on different kinds of storage, with one copy off-site—helps reduce the risk that one failure or accident takes out every copy.

If transfers are slower than expected

Before concluding that the SSD is faulty, check the entire connection and workload:

  1. Connect the drive directly to the computer rather than through a hub or dock.
  2. Try the included cable, then another known-good cable, and test a different USB port.
  3. Confirm the port’s negotiated speed; USB-C alone does not establish a 10Gbps connection.
  4. Update relevant system, chipset, and Samsung software.
  5. Test with a large sequential file; thousands of small files produce a different workload.
  6. Check available space and drive health. Back up important files before repair attempts or reformatting.

Slow source storage, heat, a nearly full drive, file-system overhead, and background security software can all affect results. Troubleshoot one variable at a time so a cable or port bottleneck is not mistaken for an SSD performance problem.
