A Cardiff City Online forum post dated 29 November 2025, reproducing a report that could not be independently located, said former Birmingham City and Cardiff City chairman Samesh Kumar won £249,999 through the People’s Postcode Lottery. The post said the prize was shared among neighbours. The available evidence does not establish that this was a technical lottery “jackpot,” or confirm the amount through the lottery operator.
What is known about the reported cash windfall?
The £249,999 figure comes from a Cardiff City Online forum post titled “Samesh Kumar wins £1/4m on the Postcode Lottery,” dated 29 November 2025. The post reproduces a report, but that original report was not independently located. The figure should therefore be treated as reported, rather than as an independently confirmed payout.
The forum post says the prize was shared among multiple neighbours. Without an original report or an official lottery record, the evidence does not establish Kumar’s individual share, the precise prize arrangement, or whether “jackpot” was an official description.
Why is Kumar associated with Cardiff City and Birmingham City?
Cardiff City
Cardiff City’s official history says Kumar took over as chairman after agreeing a deal with Rick Wright. The club records that he resigned at the end of the 1998–99 season. Cardiff City’s history of the club from 1989 to 1999 provides the club’s retrospective account.

Birmingham City
A 1993 report in The Independent said a receiver took control after the collapse of a clothing business associated with Kumar. The report said that business held an 84% shareholding in Birmingham City. That is a statement about the company’s stake, not proof that Kumar personally owned the whole shareholding or a measure of his personal finances. The Independent’s report on the Birmingham City takeover describes the event.
What made his Cardiff chairmanship controversial?
A December 1998 profile in the supporter-facing magazine When Saturday Comes criticized Cardiff’s spending and managerial decisions. It also credited Kumar with listening to supporters and with the decision to remain at Ninian Park. That mixed account supports describing his record as contentious, but it does not show that all supporters shared the same view. “Divisive” is a characterization, not a measured consensus. When Saturday Comes’ 1998 profile of Samesh Kumar captures that contemporary mixture of criticism and praise.

The magazine printed the phrase “The fans must be patient,” attributing it to Kumar when he took over; it said the words were repeated three seasons later. The profile does not supply a named interview speaker or recording context, so the wording is best understood as a quotation printed by the magazine, rather than as a newly verified interview transcript.
What was the Phil Neal compensation dispute?
In 1996, Kumar threatened legal action over compensation after Phil Neal left Cardiff for Manchester City. The Independent reported Kumar saying: “I don’t know what the situation is because nobody from Manchester has had the courtesy to tell me.” This is evidence of a reported dispute over Neal’s departure, not proof of misconduct. The Independent’s 8 October 1996 report covers the dispute.

Do the available reports establish wrongdoing or financial hardship?
No. The sources cited here document contentious football decisions, a reported company collapse and a later reported lottery prize. They do not establish criminal conduct, Kumar’s personal financial condition, or his net worth. The company’s Birmingham City shareholding and the reported prize should not be used to draw conclusions about his personal wealth.
