The former Scotland international identified in the headline is James McFadden. Scottish Financial News reported on January 12, 2026, citing details from Scotland’s Accountant in Bankruptcy, that he had been declared bankrupt, with debts of nearly £2.6 million and assets of £0. Trustee Paul Dounis said McFadden voluntarily entered sequestration in Scotland.

Who was declared bankrupt?

The January 9, 2026, Daily Bankruptcy News index listed the headline and named James McFadden. McFadden previously played for Birmingham City and Sunderland and represented Scotland. A secondary sports report gives his international total as 48 caps; that figure is attributed to that report rather than an authoritative football record.

What were the reported debts and assets?

Scottish Financial News reported nearly £2.6 million in debts and £0 in assets, citing details published by the Accountant in Bankruptcy, Scotland’s insolvency agency. The figures are reported by the outlet; the underlying official record was not directly accessed for this account.

What does sequestration mean in this case?

Sequestration is the Scottish insolvency process named in trustee Paul Dounis’s statement. Scottish Financial News quoted Dounis, an Opus Restructuring LLP partner appointed as trustee, saying McFadden had “voluntarily entered sequestration in Scotland.” This describes the Scottish process; it should not be confused with procedures used in England and Wales.

What explanation did the trustee give?

Dounis said the case followed losses connected to historic property and film investment schemes from the early 2000s and associated tax matters. That is the trustee’s explanation as reported by Scottish Financial News, not a finding here that McFadden committed fraud, evaded tax or engaged in misconduct. Dounis also said appropriate legal processes were being followed and that Opus was supporting the sequestration in line with statutory requirements.

What is confirmed about the reporting?

Scottish Financial News is the accessible report carrying both the financial particulars attributed to the Accountant in Bankruptcy and the trustee’s explanation. The Daily Bankruptcy News page is an index: its January 9 entry names McFadden and repeats the headline, but its linked story was not accessible. A separate sports report provides career context and a more precise debt figure, but the rounded figure reported by Scottish Financial News is used here because that more exact amount was not independently verified.

No later outcome of the sequestration or recovery figure is established by these accessible reports.
