Salesforce’s 2023 plan was to market more than 200,000 square feet of Tableau-related office space in the Seattle region for sublease—not to abandon Seattle outright. The reported package included nearly 120,000 square feet at Data 1 in Fremont and about 92,000 square feet at Kirkland Urban. But the plan later changed: the Puget Sound Business Journal reported in July 2026 that Tableau renewed a roughly 114,000-square-foot Data 1 lease.
That makes the clearest reading of the episode a partial real-estate retrenchment. Salesforce sought to reduce excess capacity after layoffs and a shift toward hybrid work, while retaining at least one important Fremont base for Tableau employees.

What Salesforce originally put on the sublease market
Reports in April 2023 described an approximately 212,000-square-foot package:

The roughly 212,000-square-foot total is an approximation assembled from the reported component figures. It should not be treated as a precise Salesforce disclosure or as proof that every listed suite was successfully subleased.

Sublease is not the same as abandoning a building
A sublease generally means the original tenant remains responsible for its lease while another occupant uses some or all of the space. It is different from terminating a lease, returning space to the landlord, selling a property, or closing an office.
Accordingly, “Salesforce shed 200,000 square feet” is useful shorthand but imprecise. In April 2023, the space was reported as being marketed for sublease. The evidence does not establish that the entire package was permanently exited.
What are Data 1, Kirkland Urban and the other Fremont property?
Data 1
Data 1 is in Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood. Tableau opened the building in 2018, making it a prominent part of the company’s local identity. The 2023 reporting referred to nearly 120,000 square feet being offered for sublease. In July 2026, the Puget Sound Business Journal reported that Tableau renewed a 114,000-square-foot lease, allowing the Salesforce division to remain after the existing lease was due to expire in 2029.

Rank #2
The 114,000-square-foot renewal and the earlier “nearly 120,000 square feet” listing are not necessarily identical measurements. They may reflect differences in suite boundaries, measurement methods or lease scope.
Kirkland Urban
Kirkland Urban is across Lake Washington from Seattle. Tableau occupied space there as part of its broader regional footprint, and approximately 92,000 square feet was identified for sublease in the 2023 reports. The supplied later reporting does not confirm whether that space was subleased, retained, reduced, returned or otherwise disposed of.
Tableau’s other Fremont headquarters property
In May 2023, Salesforce also confirmed that Tableau’s headquarters building in Fremont would be listed for sublease. This property should not be confused with Data 1. Public descriptions of the announcement did not clearly specify the headquarters building’s square footage or its final disposition.
The separate 701 N. 34th Street property also appeared in subsequent local commercial-real-estate reporting, which said Salesforce renewed approximately 21,255 square feet there in late 2023.

The move fit a company-wide effort to lower costs and consolidate real estate. Salesforce announced a workforce reduction of about 10% in January 2023. Its fiscal 2023 annual report discussed consolidating and subleasing additional real estate and exiting or reducing space in selected markets.
Several pressures were operating at once:
- Lower office utilization: Hybrid work reduced the need to keep every pre-pandemic desk and collaboration area available every day.
- Cost control: Subleasing can help offset rent and operating costs when a company occupies more space than it needs.
- Post-acquisition overlap: Salesforce acquired Tableau in 2019 in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $15.7 billion. Integrating organizations can leave a company with overlapping offices and leases.
- A weaker technology-office market: In early 2023, GeekWire reported Seattle-area office sublease availability at 18%, up from 16% the prior quarter, citing Kidder Mathews. That was a time-specific market snapshot, not a current 2026 rate.
A large sublease listing can add competition to an already weak office market, potentially putting pressure on rents and making it harder for landlords to fill conventional space. It does not, by itself, prove that Salesforce caused a citywide pricing change.
Did Salesforce abandon Seattle or Tableau?
No. Salesforce said Tableau remained an important business and that Seattle employees would continue to have access to office space. The later Data 1 renewal is consistent with a targeted reduction in excess capacity rather than a complete withdrawal from the region.
That does not mean Salesforce’s Seattle strategy was unchanged. Tableau had been a major Seattle technology employer, and Salesforce’s 2019 acquisition helped fuel ambitions for a larger local presence sometimes described as an “HQ2” strategy. The 2023 sublease announcements showed a more cautious approach to physical space.
Real estate, however, is only one part of a company’s strategy. The office changes do not establish that Tableau’s product business was being discontinued, that the company had left Seattle, or that the subleases directly caused layoffs.

Timeline: from cost cutting to Data 1 renewal
- January 2023: Salesforce announced a workforce reduction and broader cost-cutting measures.
- April 18–19, 2023: Reports identified approximately 120,000 square feet at Data 1 and approximately 92,000 square feet at Kirkland Urban for sublease.
- May 26, 2023: Salesforce confirmed that Tableau’s Fremont headquarters building would also be listed for sublease.
- December 2023: A local commercial-real-estate summary reported that Salesforce renewed approximately 21,255 square feet at 701 N. 34th Street and had reconsidered subleasing the roughly 120,000-square-foot Data 1 space.
- July 2026: The Puget Sound Business Journal reported a 114,000-square-foot Data 1 lease renewal, with the Salesforce division remaining in the building after the prior lease expires in 2029.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
The evidence supports these conclusions:
- Salesforce pursued a major reduction in Tableau-related office capacity in 2023.
- The originally reported package totaled more than 200,000 square feet on an approximate basis.
- Data 1 was later retained or renewed, according to 2026 reporting.
- Salesforce’s Seattle presence was being optimized, not demonstrably eliminated.
The evidence does not provide a complete property-by-property accounting. In particular, the final outcome for the Kirkland Urban space and Tableau’s other Fremont headquarters property remains unclear in the supplied sources. The 2026 Data 1 renewal also does not establish that all other Tableau-area properties were retained.
Why this matters beyond Tableau
For Salesforce, the decision illustrates the trade-off between reducing fixed occupancy costs and maintaining physical space for recruiting, collaboration, customer events and employee identity. That trade-off is especially visible for Tableau because its Seattle offices were closely tied to the company’s history and brand.
For Seattle’s office market, a large technology-company sublease adds meaningful available inventory and gives prospective tenants another option, but its broader effect depends on whether the space is actually subleased, at what economics and for how long. For employees and investors, the later Data 1 renewal is a reminder that a headline about shrinking office space is not the same as a complete business exit.
