1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesShort answer: there is no single Salesforce certification that is best for everyone. Choose the credential that matches the work you want to do: Platform Administrator is the broadest foundation, Platform Developer fits software-focused candidates, Business Analyst suits requirements work, and consultant, product, architect, or Agentforce credentials are better once your direction and experience are clear.
Most standard Salesforce exams cost US$200 before tax, with a US$100 retake. Certifications also require ongoing maintenance in many cases, and Salesforce has announced significant catalog changes, including certifications scheduled to retire on February 1, 2027. Prices, exam versions, and deadlines below were checked against Salesforce and Trailhead information available on August 18, 2026.

Which Salesforce certification is right for you?
Salesforce certifications are role- and product-specific credentials, not one universal qualification. Salesforce currently organizes its catalog across administrator, architect, business analyst, consultant, data analyst, developer, designer, marketer, sales, product-focused, and Accredited Professional tracks. See the current Salesforce certification catalog before registering.
| Your goal | Likely starting point | Possible next step |
|---|---|---|
| Configure Salesforce, support users, and manage setup | Platform Administrator | Platform Administrator II, App Builder, Business Analyst, or consultant credentials |
| Build declarative apps and automation | Platform Administrator or Platform Foundations | Platform App Builder or Platform Administrator II |
| Write Apex and Lightning components | Platform Developer | Platform Developer II, JavaScript, integration, or architecture credentials |
| Gather requirements and translate business needs | Business Analyst or Platform Administrator | Consultant, industry, or product credentials |
| Implement Sales, Service, or industry solutions | Platform Administrator or a relevant foundation credential | Product and consultant certifications |
| Design data, integration, security, or enterprise solutions | Relevant administrator or developer experience | Application Architect, System Architect, or domain architect credentials |
| Work with analytics and Tableau | Tableau or data-focused foundation | Tableau Data Analyst, Server Administrator, or Architect |
| Configure AI agents and prompt templates | Platform Administrator foundation plus Agentforce preparation | Agentforce Specialist |
Use the job you want—not perceived prestige—as the selection criterion. A developer certification may be a poor fit for a no-code administrator role, while Platform Administrator alone may not demonstrate the Apex and software-engineering skills required for a developer position.

What a Salesforce certification proves
A Salesforce certification is a Salesforce-issued credential earned primarily by passing a proctored exam. Salesforce describes its credentials as validation of knowledge and experience associated with particular products and roles. Exams are generally pass/fail, and candidates cannot use hard-copy or online reference materials during the exam. The Trailhead credentials overview explains the credential system and terminology.
Certification is different from:
- Trailhead badge: recognition for completing a module or learning activity.
- Superbadge: a practical Trailhead challenge that tests applied skills.
- Trailmix: a curated collection of learning content.
- Agentblazer status: a learning and achievement pathway related to Agentforce, not automatically the same as a certification.
- Accredited Professional credential: a separate Salesforce credential category with its own price and requirements.
- Employer or partner training: useful instruction, but not the Salesforce certification itself.
A credential can strengthen a resume, LinkedIn profile, and Trailblazer profile, but it does not prove that you have delivered a production implementation, solved ambiguous business problems, communicated with stakeholders, or managed change safely. Pair it with a portfolio project, Superbadge, implementation experience, or a documented business outcome.
The main Salesforce certification paths
Administrator
The administrator path is centered on configuration, security, data, automation, applications, reporting, and user support. A common progression is Platform Foundations (optional), Platform Administrator, then Platform App Builder, Business Analyst, Platform Administrator II, product, consultant, or architect credentials.
Recommended Free Tools
Platform Administrator II is intended for seasoned administrators who understand advanced configuration, management, and application-extension capabilities. Salesforce points candidates toward hands-on experience, Trailhead trails, Superbadges, self-study, and courses such as Administer, Extend, and Automate Salesforce (ADX211) and Prepare for your Platform Administrator II Certification Exam (CRT211). Check the current Platform Administrator II guidance for availability.
Developer
Platform Developer tests programmatic development rather than simply advanced administration. Its subject matter includes Apex, data modeling, automation boundaries, Lightning components, testing, debugging, deployment, integration, security, and platform limits. The usual progression is Platform Developer, Platform Developer II, then JavaScript, integration, MuleSoft, or architecture specialization.
Business Analyst and consultant
Business Analyst credentials emphasize discovery, requirements, process analysis, and translating business needs into solutions. Consultant credentials are product- and implementation-oriented. These paths are generally more useful after you understand Salesforce fundamentals because implementation work requires solution judgment, stakeholder management, and practical configuration knowledge.
Architect
Architect credentials are advanced specializations, not sensible beginner targets. Salesforce’s catalog includes application, data, deployment lifecycle, identity and access management, integration, sharing and visibility, B2B/B2C, Heroku, MuleSoft, Tableau, and Technical Architect credentials. Review the architect overview before planning a path.

These tracks suit people whose work is concentrated in analytics, Tableau, marketing technology, sales processes, user experience, or a particular Salesforce product. They can provide a stronger signal than a broad credential when a target role explicitly requires that product, but they are narrower and may not substitute for platform fundamentals.
Agentforce
Agentforce Specialist is aimed at people who configure and manage AI agents and prompt templates. Salesforce’s candidate profile includes familiarity with Agentforce Agent Builder, Prompt Builder, Data 360, Testing Center, and deployment from sandbox to production, with approximately one year of Salesforce configuration experience—including Data 360 and hands-on agent building—described as typical. Platform Administrator and Platform App Builder are useful related credentials but are not required. See the Agentforce Specialist exam guide.
That makes Agentforce Specialist a poor universal beginner recommendation. Agentforce content is evolving, and the credential is most useful when you already understand the platform and can build, test, secure, and deploy an agent responsibly.
Best first certification for beginners
Platform Administrator: the broad foundation
Platform Administrator is usually the strongest first choice for career changers, CRM support professionals, new administrators, business users moving into configuration, and consultants who need platform fundamentals. Its current preparation material covers:
- Configuration and setup: 15%
- Object Manager and Lightning App Builder: 15%
- Sales and marketing applications: 10%
- Service and support applications: 10%
- Productivity and collaboration: 10%
- Data and analytics management: 17%
- Automation: 15%
- Agentforce: 8%
Salesforce’s administrator preparation trailmix currently estimates about 59 hours 55 minutes. That is a learning estimate, not a guarantee of exam readiness. The current exam guide recommends at least six months of administrator experience but lists no formal prerequisite.
Platform Foundations: an inexpensive orientation
Platform Foundations is designed for people with foundational Salesforce knowledge. Its current guide lists 40 questions, up to five unscored questions, 70 minutes, a 62% passing score, a US$75 registration fee, and a free retake. It currently requires no maintenance. It is useful as a low-cost orientation, but it is not equivalent in depth or hiring signal to Platform Administrator. Details are in the Platform Foundations guide.
Platform Developer: for technical candidates
Choose Platform Developer first if your target work clearly involves Apex, Lightning development, testing, deployment, and programmatic solutions. It is not an “advanced administrator” exam. The guide lists 60 scored multiple-choice questions, up to five unscored questions, 105 minutes, a 68% passing score, a US$200 registration fee, a US$100 retake, and no formal prerequisite. See the Platform Developer exam guide.

Exam format and requirements
Many core exams list no formal prerequisite. That means you may be eligible to register; it does not mean you can succeed without Salesforce knowledge. Recommended experience is a readiness signal, not an eligibility rule.
Exam statistics vary by credential and release. For example, the current surfaced guides list:
- Platform Administrator: 68% in English and 65% in Japanese.
- Platform Foundations: 62%.
- Platform Developer: 68%.
- Agentforce Specialist: 72%.
Question counts, time limits, passing scores, and topic weights can change. Exam guides are release-specific: the surfaced Platform Administrator and Platform Developer guides align with Summer ’25, while the surfaced Agentforce Specialist guide aligns with Spring ’26. Always read the current guide immediately before studying and booking.
Most exams are available at an authorized testing center or online with remote proctoring. Choose a testing center if your internet, equipment, room, or home environment is unreliable. Online delivery can reduce travel but adds identity, room, connectivity, and check-in requirements. Confirm current identification, equipment, cancellation, rescheduling, and check-in rules through the official registration flow.
Salesforce certification cost
The following are official U.S. list prices checked August 18, 2026. Taxes are additional and collected according to local law. Prices and eligibility for discounts can change.
| Credential category | Initial exam | Retake |
|---|---|---|
| Foundations | US$75 | Free |
| Administrator, Business Analyst, Consultant, Data Analyst, Designer, Developer, Marketer | US$200 | US$100 |
| Product-focused, including Agentforce Specialist | US$200 | US$100 |
| Accredited Professional | US$150 | US$150 |
| Architect | US$400 | US$200 |
| Technical Architect evaluation | US$1,500 | US$750 |
| Technical Architect review board | US$4,500 | US$2,250 |
See Salesforce’s current certification pricing. Partner, Signature, and Premier customers may qualify for discounted exam vouchers.
Budget beyond the registration fee:
- Training courses or instructor-led instruction.
- Practice tests.
- Time spent learning and building in a practice environment.
- Travel and time away from work for a testing center.
- Retakes and future maintenance time.
Examples are straightforward: Foundations starts at US$75 plus tax; Platform Administrator is US$200 plus tax; Platform Administrator followed by one retake is US$300 plus tax. An architect path can cost substantially more before training or retakes.

How to train and prepare
- Choose the credential from a target role. Compare job descriptions and identify the skills employers actually request.
- Download the current exam guide. Record the release version, question count, time limit, passing score, domain weights, experience guidance, maintenance rule, and retirement dates.
- Follow the official Trailhead preparation path. Use the relevant trail, modules, projects, and Superbadges. Trailhead is a strong free starting point, but completion alone does not guarantee readiness.
- Build and troubleshoot. Administrators should create objects, relationships, validation rules, security models, reports, dashboards, flows, and data imports. Developers should practice Apex, SOQL, DML, governor limits, testing, deployment, Lightning components, security, and integration patterns.
- Study by domain weight. Give the largest sections the most time, while closing gaps in smaller domains that can collectively determine the result.
- Use practice questions diagnostically. They can reveal weak areas and familiarize you with scenarios. Do not use exam dumps or memorized unauthorized answers; they violate certification rules and do not demonstrate competence.
- Book only after checking the release calendar. Make sure the exam is still open for registration and that your study materials match the current version.
- Schedule maintenance immediately after passing. Add the relevant badge deadline to your calendar and confirm that the credential is attached to the correct Trailhead account.
A four- to eight-week plan can work for someone with relevant experience and consistent study time; a beginner may need longer. Let hands-on readiness—not an arbitrary calendar—decide when to book. Paid, instructor-led options are available through Trailhead Academy. Course dates, delivery formats, and prices vary; Salesforce specifically names ADX211 and CRT211 for the Platform Administrator II path.
How to book and take the exam
- Use your Salesforce or Trailhead account and confirm the exact credential name.
- Read the current exam guide and check the catalog for retirement or version changes.
- Register through Salesforce’s official credentials flow.
- Choose an authorized testing center or online proctoring.
- Review the current identification, equipment, room, check-in, rescheduling, and cancellation requirements.
- Take the proctored exam without reference materials.
- Record the result and verify that the credential appears on the correct Trailblazer profile.
Retakes and failed attempts
Under the current retake policy, within a release cycle the first failed attempt requires a 24-hour wait before a second attempt. A second failure requires a 14-day wait before a third attempt. After a third failed attempt, you generally wait until the next release cycle. Attempts reset at the beginning of the next release cycle, and dates are subject to change. Most retakes cost 50% of the initial exam price; Foundations is the exception because its retake is free. Consult the current retake policy.
Maintaining, expiring, and reinstating a certification
Most Salesforce certifications are not permanent. Salesforce generally requires certified professionals to complete a relevant Trailhead maintenance badge once per year. The badge and deadline depend on the credential and release cycle.
For example, Platform Administrator and Platform Administrator II use the Platform Administrator maintenance badge on the Spring cycle. Salesforce says that people who earned Platform Administrator on or before April 22, 2026 must complete the Spring ’26 maintenance badge by April 16, 2027. Platform Foundations currently requires no maintenance. Verify your specific status in Salesforce’s maintenance guidance and maintenance schedule.
Missing a deadline can cause expiration or suspension. A recently expired credential may qualify for case-by-case reinstatement, but reinstatement is not guaranteed. A credential expired for more than one release cycle generally requires retaking the exam. After completing maintenance, status can take up to 24 hours to update. Check the official credential verification page rather than relying on an old resume or profile entry.
Retiring certifications and changing exam catalogs
Check retirement notices before paying or beginning a long study plan. Salesforce says 24 certifications are scheduled to retire on February 1, 2027, while 63 certifications will remain. The exact treatment of existing holders depends on the relevant retirement information.

For example, CPQ Administrator’s listed deadlines were:
- Last day to register: July 24, 2026.
- Last day to take the exam: August 31, 2026.
- Retirement date: February 1, 2027.
See the CPQ Administrator retirement notice and the applicable retirement FAQ. Retirement does not necessarily mean existing holders immediately lose the credential; transition and maintenance treatment must be checked for that credential.
Is Salesforce certification worth the cost?
It can be worthwhile when it gives structure to learning and directly supports a target role. It can help a recruiter or employer screen for baseline platform knowledge, especially when paired with a project that shows what you personally configured or built.
It is not a guarantee of employment, salary, promotion, or implementation competence. The return is weaker when someone collects unrelated credentials without hands-on evidence. A practical portfolio, Superbadge, business outcome, and clear explanation of decisions can make one well-matched certification more useful than a long list of disconnected badges.

Frequently asked questions
Can a Salesforce certification be listed as a Trailhead badge?
No. Use Salesforce’s exact certification name on your resume and LinkedIn, and list ordinary Trailhead badges and Superbadges separately.
Does a retirement date automatically erase an existing certification?
Not necessarily. Existing holders may receive different transition or maintenance treatment, so consult the credential-specific retirement information instead of assuming immediate loss.
How should employers evaluate a certified candidate?
Treat certification as evidence of structured product knowledge, then assess practical configuration or development work, troubleshooting, communication, security judgment, and business outcomes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take a Salesforce certification exam without professional experience?
Many core exams list no formal prerequisite. However, recommended experience still matters for readiness: eligibility to register is not the same as being prepared to pass.

The exams generally are not free. Platform Foundations is currently US$75, most standard exams are US$200, and taxes may apply. Trailhead learning is the main free, self-paced preparation route.
How long should preparation take?
It depends on prior experience, study time, and the credential. Salesforce currently estimates about 59 hours 55 minutes for its Platform Administrator preparation trailmix, but that estimate is not a readiness guarantee.
Which certification is usually best for a career changer?
Platform Administrator is usually the broadest foundation for a career changer targeting configuration or CRM support. Platform Foundations is a cheaper orientation option, but it is not equivalent in depth.
