NVIDIA announced the price and an April 13, 2023 availability date; the $599 figure is the card’s historical launch MSRP, not a guarantee of today’s retail price.
What the RTX 4070 price leak said
On March 30, 2023, PC Gamer described a newer $599 rumor as more appealing than earlier speculation that the RTX 4070 would cost $749.99. Tom’s Hardware reported on April 2 that a leak put the card at $599 and listed 200W total graphics power, while noting that many specifications circulating at the time came from leaks rather than NVIDIA. Tom’s Hardware’s report is the source for the price and power figures.

Notebookcheck later characterized the reported shift as a reduction from $749.99 to $599.99 and said the final MSRP reportedly surprised add-in-board partners. That partner reaction was part of leak coverage, not a statement confirmed by NVIDIA. The earlier $749.99 figure was an expectation reported before launch—not the official price.
NVIDIA confirmed a $599 starting MSRP
NVIDIA’s official GeForce announcement said: “Introducing the GeForce RTX 4070, available April 13th, starting at $599.” The company’s April 12, 2023 newsroom release identified the card as an Ada Lovelace GPU with DLSS 3 and real-time ray tracing. NVIDIA also advertised performance above 100 frames per second in most modern games at 1440p. That is the company’s launch performance claim, not a guarantee for every game or system.
#1 Best Overall
- Powered by NVIDIA DLSS3, ultra-efficient Ada Lovelace arch, and full ray tracing
- 4th Generation Tensor Cores: Up to 4x performance with DLSS 3 vs. brute-force rendering
- 3rd Generation RT Cores: Up to 2x ray tracing performance
- OC edition: Boost Clock 2550 MHz (OC Mode)/ 2520 MHz (Default Mode)
- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
The distinction between MSRP and what a buyer pays matters: $599 was the starting MSRP, and individual add-in-board models and retail listings can differ. The announcement establishes the launch price, not current availability or a current selling price.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the launch price compared with the RTX 3070
The RTX 3070 launched at $499, according to PC Gamer’s March 2023 report. On launch MSRP, that made the RTX 4070 $100 more expensive than its predecessor. So the $599 figure was much lower than the earlier $749.99 expectation, but it was not a lower generational price than the RTX 3070’s launch MSRP.

- AI Performance: 767 AI TOPS
- OC mode: 2632 MHz (OC mode)/ 2602 MHz (Default mode)
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
For a purchase decision, compare actual listings available to you rather than treating either card’s historical launch MSRP as today’s price. Also consider the performance you need at your target resolution, ray tracing, DLSS support, memory capacity, power requirements and the specific model’s price.
