It buys products from retailers, documents its test procedures, uses repeatable equipment, and explains how measurements become scores.
That makes RTINGS more rigorous than a typical affiliate review site. It does not make every score universally correct, however. A review usually covers one tested unit under controlled conditions, and RTINGS’ weighting may not match your priorities. For a major purchase, use RTINGS as one part of the decision—not as a guarantee of comfort, durability, customer service, or ownership experience.
Why RTINGS is considered reliable
It says it buys products from ordinary retailers
RTINGS says it purchases the products it tests from retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, and B&H instead of accepting manufacturer-selected review samples. The stated purpose is to reduce the risk that a company sends an unusually strong or specially screened unit.
This is a meaningful credibility signal because the test sample is intended to resemble what a consumer can buy. It is not proof that every unit of the same model will perform identically. Unit-to-unit variation still exists, especially with TVs and other displays.

RTINGS says its testing primarily focuses on products available in the United States. Check the exact model number and regional version before applying a result to an imported or differently configured product. Its test benches make comparisons more consistent
A RTINGS test bench defines the tests, equipment, setup, metrics, and scoring used for a category. Products tested under the same bench are intended to be compared using the same procedure rather than a reviewer’s changing impressions.
The equipment is category-specific. For example, TV testing uses tools including colorimeters, spectroradiometers, CalMAN, signal generators, and custom input-lag equipment. Headphone testing includes specialized equipment such as a Brüel & Kjær head-and-torso simulator and an Audio Precision analyzer. RTINGS describes these procedures in its TV testing guide and headphone testing guide.
The methodology is available for inspection
RTINGS publishes test explanations, test-bench changelogs, scoring details, and “Learn about…” links on many review pages. You can therefore investigate what a rating means instead of accepting an unexplained number.

This transparency is especially useful when you are spending hundreds or thousands of dollars. A shopper can check whether a TV’s score reflects brightness, reflection handling, motion, gaming features, or some other attribute—and then decide whether those attributes matter for their room and use.

It can retest products
Because RTINGS keeps purchased products, it says it can retest them after firmware updates or methodology changes. Its TV testing information says previously reviewed TVs may be retested under a new methodology or after firmware updates. Readers can also report errors through [email protected], the site’s forums, and review comments.
How RTINGS makes money—and why that matters
RTINGS lists four main revenue sources:
- Membership subscriptions
- Affiliate commissions from retailer links
- Display advertising
- Content licensing, including badges and quotations
RTINGS says its commerce team is separate from its lab and editorial operations and that it does not accept paid or sponsored reviews. Those are the company’s stated policies and useful disclosures. They are not the same as an independent audit proving that editorial decisions are free from every commercial influence.
Affiliate links create a commercial relationship with retailers, even if the commission does not determine the result. That does not automatically make the testing unreliable, but it is a reason to read the methodology and measurements rather than treating every recommendation as financially neutral.

The claim that RTINGS is permanently ad-free is also outdated. On May 15, 2025, RTINGS announced that it would begin introducing display advertising while saying advertising would remain separate from testing and editorial operations.
What does an RTINGS membership cost?
RTINGS’ membership page currently lists $7 for the first month, then $10 per month, or $31.50 for the first year, then $45 per year. Benefits include unlimited access to up-to-date reviews and no ads. Promotional pricing and terms can change, so verify the current offer before subscribing.
For a one-time purchase, paying for membership may not be worthwhile if the information you need is already accessible. For someone comparing several expensive products—or making repeated purchases—the annual fee may be reasonable if the detailed measurements save you from an unsuitable purchase. Include the membership cost in your buying budget rather than assuming the site is free.

What RTINGS scores do—and do not—tell you
A score is not a universal quality rating
RTINGS converts selected measurements into category and usage ratings. The weighting reflects RTINGS’ view of what matters, combined with user feedback. Those priorities differ by use case.
A gaming rating may emphasize input lag, refresh-rate support, motion handling, and response time. A movie-focused rating may put more weight on contrast, black levels, HDR performance, and picture processing. A product can therefore be excellent for one buyer and merely average for another.
The overall number is a summary, not the underlying evidence. Read the individual test results, written notes, and limitations before deciding.
Scores from different test benches may not be comparable
RTINGS assigns versions to its test benches. Minor revisions are generally designed to preserve comparison, but major revisions can make older and newer scores incompatible. Older reviews may display a disclaimer when direct comparison is not appropriate.
Do not compare two products solely because both have a score on a 0–10 scale. First check:

- The review or update date.
- Any warning that older and newer results should not be directly compared.
Older reviews may contain stale information
RTINGS says it cannot retest every product whenever a test bench changes. It generally prioritizes relevant products that remain available and may update the text only for more popular models. This can leave inconsistencies between older written comments, newer measurements, and current scores.
That matters financially when an older product has fallen sharply in price. A low price may still be attractive, but check whether its review reflects current firmware, current competitors, and the latest testing system.
Important limitations before you buy

Laboratory performance is not the same as home performance
RTINGS performs many tests under controlled conditions. For TVs, most picture-quality testing is done in a dark room using calibrated settings and specialized meters. Headphone fixtures standardize measurements, but your fit, seal, source device, and personal hearing still affect what you experience.
Examples where your environment can change the outcome include:
- A TV that performs well in a dark lab but struggles with glare in a sunny living room.
- Headphones whose measured isolation or bass response changes because they do not seal comfortably around your ears.
- A router or other wireless product that performs differently because of walls, interference, or the size of your home.
- An appliance whose measured noise does not capture how disruptive it feels in your kitchen or bedroom.
A normal review is not a multi-year reliability study
RTINGS’ ordinary reviews primarily evaluate performance. They are not warranty-failure surveys or multi-year ownership studies. RTINGS has conducted dedicated longevity and burn-in projects, including TV burn-in and accelerated-longevity testing, but those special projects should not be confused with proof that every standard review establishes a product’s expected lifespan.

For an expensive purchase, also check the manufacturer’s warranty, repairability, return window, replacement-part availability, and long-term owner reports. Those factors can affect the total cost more than a small difference in laboratory performance.

RTINGS’ changelogs show that its methods are revised when weaknesses are found. That is not evidence that the entire service is unreliable; it is evidence that measurements and scoring systems require ongoing review.
- In February 2026, the Air Purifier Test Bench 1.1 changelog said earlier particle-filtration results could have been erroneously inflated because of problems with the testing chamber and particle-generation method. RTINGS introduced a revised method and retested popular models.
- In the Headphones Test Bench 2.0 update, RTINGS removed or changed several measurements and verdicts, including Breathability, after finding that variation in the test rig made the result insufficiently representative.
- RTINGS has also changed its scoring structure and weighting over time.
When an older review is central to your decision, open the relevant changelog and look for a retest, a disclaimer, or a material change in the scoring system.

How to use RTINGS without overtrusting it
- Check the test-bench version and update date. This is the fastest way to avoid comparing incompatible scores.
- Read the measurements behind the headline number. Identify the attributes that affect your use, such as brightness, input lag, isolation, comfort, or microphone quality.
- Confirm the exact model and region. Similar model names can hide different sizes, panels, features, or regional configurations.
- Look for firmware, burn-in, longevity, and compatibility notes. These may matter more than a small score difference.
- Separate measurable and personal factors. Treat comfort, sound preference, software experience, appearance, and ease of maintenance as questions that require additional evidence.
- Compare ownership risks. Check owner reports, warranty terms, return policies, retailer reputation, and likely repair or replacement costs.
- Use price as part of the verdict. A slightly weaker product may be the better financial choice if it costs substantially less and meets your requirements.
