Romain Jerome’s Moon Dust-DNA watches pair oversized, space-inspired design with manufacturer-described lunar and Apollo-era materials. They are not one uniform model or price point: official listings show steel models at $16,950 and $22,900 before applicable taxes, while a rare tourbillon is listed at CHF 156,000 excluding VAT. A 2024 auction result of CHF 3,000 for one chronograph is a dated, condition-specific sale—not a current valuation for the collection.
What are Romain Jerome Moon Dust-DNA watches?
RJ-Romain Jerome’s official user manual dates the Moon-DNA collection to 2009 and says it was inspired by space exploration. Its description of the family refers to Moon dust, elements of the Apollo 11 spacecraft, or fibers from an International Space Station spacesuit. The exact reference and configuration matter: the manual describes materials used across the family, not necessarily every material in every watch.
The manual says the dial has a mineral coating containing authentic Moon dust blended with natural pigments, and that the 1.4435-XI steel cases combine conventional stainless steel with steel taken from the Apollo XI spacecraft. These are the manufacturer’s descriptions; the cited material does not establish independent laboratory verification. The manual calls Moon-DNA “an exclusive and original collection, launched in 2009, inspired by the most fascinating human adventure of all : the conquest of space.” Read the RJ-Romain Jerome user manual.
How do the models differ?
Moon Dust-DNA spans more than one movement and complication. The manufacturer’s listings distinguish an automatic chronograph from automatic PVD variants, while the GPHG profile describes a separate, unusually scarce manual-winding tourbillon.

| Example | Movement and specification | Displayed price context |

Black rubber strap, or optional black Hornback crocodile leather strap partly woven with carbon fibers and ISS spacesuit fibers. | Suggested retail price $22,900 before applicable taxes; the manufacturer says prices may change. |
| Moon Dust-DNA Stainless Steel PVD, RJ.MD.AU.101.20 | 46 mm black satin-finished steel case; carbon-fibre and black-PVD stainless-steel bezel; self-winding RJ2901, 31 jewels, 28,800 vph, 38-hour power reserve. | Displayed $16,950 before applicable taxes for listed PVD and color variants; the manufacturer says prices may change. |

Specifications and displayed prices come from separate listings and profiles, so the rows are examples rather than a like-for-like price ladder. See the RJ Watches chronograph listing, RJ Watches PVD listing, and GPHG profile for The Truth about Roswell.
Why were the watches associated with high prices?
The appeal is the combination of a large 46 mm format, space-themed styling and unusual material descriptions, with complications and scarcity adding another dimension on some references. But a headline figure needs context: the official steel-model prices above concern different watches and are suggested or displayed retail prices, while the Roswell figure applies to a nine-piece tourbillon profile and excludes VAT. They do not establish one universal price for Moon Dust-DNA.

An earlier article used the same “Stratospheric Prices, Galactic Novelty” wording in its title, but its speculative $50,000–$200,000 estimate should not be treated as a verified current price. Model-specific manufacturer listings and a dated transaction provide more useful, bounded evidence.

Antiquorum records a Romain Jerome Moon Dust-DNA chronograph, reference RJMCH002, limited edition 0051/1969, sold for CHF 3,000 at its Geneva sale on November 9, 2024. Its catalog described the watch as very good overall, noted slight case scratches, and recommended an overhaul at the buyer’s expense. That is evidence of one completed sale under stated condition and service circumstances—not an appraisal, a current asking price, or a collection-wide market value. See the Antiquorum auction record.

For a meaningful comparison between two examples, check the exact reference and edition size; movement and complication; case, bezel and dial materials; condition and service history; and whether the number quoted is a suggested retail price, auction estimate or completed sale. The auction catalog’s overhaul note illustrates why service costs can affect the practical value of a pre-owned watch.

What to keep in mind before judging a price
- Match the price to the exact reference and configuration; a chronograph, PVD automatic and tourbillon are not interchangeable comparisons.
- Separate the manufacturer’s material descriptions from independently verified provenance. For the Roswell profile, GPHG says materials have legal-document authentication in Switzerland and that each piece comes with a certificate from the Association of Space Explorers; attribute those claims to the profile.
- Treat manufacturer figures as displayed suggested prices, not evidence of a completed sale. The listed pages state that suggested prices may change.
- For a pre-owned watch, use the individual condition report and service history alongside any auction result. A single transaction does not determine what another example is worth.
