But the available reporting does not establish the specific “twist” or identify a message sent by former owner Dai Yongge. The message reported after the takeover was from Couhig to season-ticket holders.
What the Reading FC takeover involved
On 3 May 2025, ITV reported that a sale to Redwood Holdings Limited, associated with Couhig and business partner Todd Trosclair, had been agreed in principle. The reported transaction covered the football club, Select Car Leasing Stadium and Bearwood training ground; legal formalities were still pending at that point. ITV News Meridian reported the sale in principle.
Reading announced completion on 14 May. BBC Sport reported that Couhig took control of the club and its facilities from Yongge, who had been majority shareholder since 2017. ITV reported that Couhig became chairman and Trosclair joined the board. BBC Sport covered completion, as did ITV News Meridian.
What is known about the legal dispute
In March 2025, Couhig told BBC Sport that Yongge had sought an injunction accusing him of blocking a sale. The judge did not grant the requested mandatory injunction. Couhig denied blocking a transaction. Those are the reported positions in the dispute; the court episode should not be read as resolving every issue between the parties. BBC Sport’s account of the dispute sets out the claim and Couhig’s response.

Which owner sent a message to supporters?
On 15 May 2025, Reading Today Online reported a message Couhig sent to season-ticket holders after completion. He thanked them for their emotional and financial support and said the new owners would be guided by honesty, transparency and financial sustainability. That report identifies Couhig’s message, not a corresponding message from Yongge. Read the account of Couhig’s message.
Accordingly, the available reporting supports a takeover, a preceding legal dispute and a post-completion message from Couhig. It does not establish what a Dai Yongge message said or what the headline’s “twist” refers to.

How supporters and community groups responded
The Sell Before We Dai campaign group welcomed the change in ownership, while making clear that its gratitude depended on the new owners’ actions. It called for transparent, prudent leadership that works with supporters and respects the club’s identity. This was the group’s stated position, not a measure of all Reading supporters’ views. BBC Sport reported the group’s reaction.
The Reading FC Community Trust also welcomed Couhig and Trosclair. The Trust said community support had helped sustain the women’s team after club funding was cut, and that the Trust had taken ownership of the team. Reading Today Online reported the Trust’s statement.

What Couhig said about Bearwood and the academy in 2026
On 2 January 2026, BBC Sport reported that Couhig denied rumors of a training-ground sale and academy downgrade. He described the claims as “categorically untrue” and said there were no plans to sell the training ground or downgrade the academy. These are Couhig’s statements as reported on that date, not independent verification of future plans. BBC Sport reported his response.
