The forecast that Rob Couhig’s takeover of Reading FC would be finalised the following week did not come true on that timetable. The negotiations reported in 2024 broke down; a later sale process led to a completed, English Football League-cleared acquisition by Redwood Holdings Limited on 14 May 2025.
Did Reading FC announce the takeover the following week?
No. On 7 October 2024, Reading announced an exclusivity period with a potential purchaser and said the parties were working to finalise terms. The club did not announce a completed sale the following week. Its statement said the proposed transaction would include Dai Yongge’s shareholding, Select Car Leasing Stadium and Bearwood Park Training Ground. At that time, the club also reported an EFL registration embargo for late filing of its 2022–23 accounts. Reading FC, 7 October 2024.
The October announcement did not establish that a Couhig purchase was imminent. BBC Sport later reported that the negotiations with Couhig had broken down in September 2024. BBC Sport.
When was the Rob Couhig Reading takeover completed?
The eventual acquisition was completed on 14 May 2025, when the EFL cleared and ratified the deal, according to BBC Sport. Redwood Holdings Limited acquired 100% of Reading FC’s shareholding; the transaction included Select Car Leasing Stadium and Bearwood Park training ground. Couhig became chairman, and both Couhig and Todd Trosclair joined the board. BBC Sport, 14 May 2025.

How the proposed sale became a completed takeover
| Date and stage | Buyer or parties | Status and EFL position | Assets identified |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 October 2024: exclusivity announced | A potential purchaser; the club’s statement did not name the buyer. | Terms were being finalised. This was not a completed sale or confirmation of EFL clearance. | Dai Yongge’s shareholding, Select Car Leasing Stadium and Bearwood Park Training Ground were identified as part of the proposed sale. Reading FC. |
| 27 March 2025: exclusivity still in place | A proposed purchaser; Reading did not name the buyer in this update. | Reading said exclusivity continued. It cited ongoing litigation involving Mr Couhig and an impasse over alternative security, while expressing hope for a resolution. Reading FC. | Not stated in this update. |
| 22 April 2025: deadline extension | Dai Yongge was required to divest his interests; the EFL cited progress on a proposed sale. | The EFL extended the divestment deadline to 5 May. This was a regulatory deadline extension, not clearance of a completed acquisition. EFL. | Not stated in this update. |
| 3 May 2025: sale in principle | Redwood Holdings Limited, a subsidiary of Dogwood Football LLC, owned by Rob Couhig and Todd Trosclair. | Reading announced a sale in principle, subject to final legal technicalities. A sale in principle was not yet completion or EFL ratification. Reading FC. | Reading’s announcement concerned the club; the 3 May statement did not itself confirm completion of the transaction. |
| 14 May 2025: acquisition completed | Redwood Holdings Limited, owned through Dogwood Football LLC by Couhig and Trosclair. | Completed and ratified by the EFL, as reported by BBC Sport. | 100% of the club’s shareholding, Select Car Leasing Stadium and Bearwood Park training ground. BBC Sport. |
The distinction between these stages matters: exclusivity signals a period for negotiating, a sale in principle records an agreement still subject to conditions, and completion follows the necessary legal and regulatory steps. On 3 May, Reading described the deal as a sale “in principle”; the completion and EFL ratification were reported on 14 May. Reading FC, 3 May 2025; BBC Sport, 14 May 2025.

What was Reading’s position when the sale completed?
BBC Sport reported that Reading finished the 2024–25 League One season in seventh place, three points short of the play-off places. In the same 2025 report, it described the club as having incurred 18 points of deductions over the recent seasons it discussed; that is a historical, source-specific total, not a figure for subsequent seasons. BBC Sport.
The takeover followed a difficult period involving financial and regulatory issues. In a 15 January 2024 statement, the EFL said Dai Yongge had missed a deadline to fund the deposit account for player and staff salaries and announced a further £50,000 fine, bringing the total fines cited in that statement to £80,000. Those are historical figures tied to the EFL’s 2024 announcement. EFL, 15 January 2024.
