Riyadh Air is Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF)-owned national airline, based in Riyadh. As of the announcements cited here, it has received its first Boeing 787-9 aircraft and opened ticket sales on several routes, while its larger fleet plans include a mix of firm orders, options and purchase rights—not aircraft all in service.
What is Riyadh Air?
Riyadh Air is a new Saudi national carrier owned by PIF, the Kingdom’s sovereign wealth fund. The fund presents the airline as part of its effort to develop strategic industries and support the tourism, travel and entertainment ecosystem. That is the stated ambition; the announcements cited here do not establish a verified number for jobs created, visitor growth attributable to the airline or realized economic contribution.
Riyadh Air is distinct from Saudia, the country’s existing airline. The available announcements do not provide a like-for-like comparison of the two carriers’ current network sizes, fares or service quality.
When did Riyadh Air start flying?
Riyadh Air announced daily Riyadh–London Heathrow flights beginning October 26, 2025, using a Boeing 787-9 technical spare aircraft named “Jamila.” The announcement is a dated launch plan, not confirmation of today’s schedule. Check Riyadh Air’s booking site for current flight dates and availability. The same announcement introduced Sfeer, the airline’s loyalty program; check its current terms directly with the airline.

In June 2026, PIF said Riyadh Air had received its first three custom-built 787-9s and opened ticket sales to Cairo, Dubai, Jeddah, Madrid and Manchester. PIF named the 787-9 as the aircraft for those routes. Ticket sales being announced does not, by itself, establish that every route is operating now or that schedules remain unchanged.
Where does Riyadh Air fly?
The announcements identify Riyadh–London Heathrow as a planned daily service from October 26, 2025, and Cairo, Dubai, Jeddah, Madrid and Manchester as destinations for which ticket sales opened in June 2026. These are dated announcements, not a live route map. Route availability, flight frequency and booking dates can change; confirm them using Riyadh Air’s current booking channels.

What planes does Riyadh Air have?
Fleet figures refer to different statuses and dates. A delivered aircraft is not the same as a firm order, an exercised option, a purchase right or an “up to” commitment. Those numbers should not be added together as if they were all planes in service.
| Aircraft | What has been announced |
|---|---|
| Boeing 787-9 | PIF said two custom-built aircraft arrived on June 5, 2026 and a third on June 7, describing them as the start of a planned 72-Dreamliner fleet. Boeing’s June 5, 2026 release announced delivery of the first two passenger 787s and described an order for up to 72 aircraft. The sources differ in emphasis and timing; neither statement means that 72 aircraft have been delivered. |
| Airbus A350-1000 | Riyadh Air’s fleet page lists 25 firm orders and 25 purchase rights. Airbus’s June 2025 announcement described an initial firm order for 25, with an agreement that could potentially increase the total to 50. Purchase rights are not firm orders or deliveries. |
| Boeing 787-10 | Boeing announced on July 20, 2026 that Riyadh Air had exercised options for 28 additional 787s, adding the 787-10 to its future fleet. An exercised option is a commitment, not proof of delivery or current service. |
Delivery status and total fleet commitments can change. For the latest aircraft status, consult the airline’s fleet information and subsequent company announcements rather than treating all announced aircraft as operational.

What does Riyadh Air say passengers can expect?
Riyadh Air describes its offer as premium and digitally native. Its fleet materials list onboard Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and in-flight entertainment. These are the airline’s product descriptions, not independent findings about reliability, cabin quality or passenger experience. CEO Tony Douglas’s message on the company’s story page says: “Riyadh Air will be a digitally native airline, driven by a pioneering spirit with an obsessive focus on attention to detail and innovation at its heart.” That is the company’s vision statement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Riyadh Air the same as Saudia?
No. Riyadh Air is a separate PIF-owned airline based in Riyadh; Saudia is the country’s existing carrier. The announcements covered here do not establish a current, comparable account of fares, route networks, cabin configurations or service quality for the two airlines, so those comparisons should be checked against current booking and airline information.
