The reported models and supply arrangements were possibilities described by Autocar—not confirmed plans—and Mercedes-Benz’s later strategy materials show a broad EU7-ready engine range without revisiting the specific claim.
What the original report said
On 21 August 2025, Autocar’s Greg Kable reported that Mercedes-Benz and BMW were in advanced discussions about a possible supply of BMW four-cylinder petrol engines for future Mercedes vehicles. The report attributed the talks to an unnamed Mercedes source and said Autocar had approached BMW for comment. Read Autocar’s report.
Autocar described possible applications ranging from the CLA and GLA to the GLB, C-Class, E-Class, GLC and a smaller G-Class model. It suggested the engines might support plug-in hybrids or range extenders, help reduce development costs, and potentially be produced in Austria or at a shared U.S. plant. Those details belong to the report; they were not announced vehicle specifications or confirmed manufacturing plans.
How Mercedes-Benz responded
At the IAA show in Munich, Mercedes-Benz Chief Technology Officer and Board of Management member Markus Schäfer was asked about the rumor. Car and Driver reported on 12 September 2025 that Schäfer replied, “There is no truth to this.” Car and Driver’s account also quoted him explaining: “We have developed our own new family of modular engines—FAME (Family of Modular Engines)—which covers all displacements, and are already compliant with EU7, China 7, and U.S. regulations.”

That is a direct public denial of the reported talks. It should not be read as confirmation that negotiations took place, nor as evidence about what BMW may or may not have discussed internally.
What Mercedes-Benz’s engine strategy materials show
Mercedes-Benz’s 2026 Strategy Update presents an EU7-ready electrified combustion-engine range comprising four-cylinder petrol and diesel, six-cylinder petrol and diesel, and eight-cylinder petrol engines. The company’s February 2025 Capital Market Day materials had also described EU7-ready engines and transmissions from four to eight cylinders.

The Capital Market Day materials said the new CLA’s four-cylinder engine was developed and designed by Mercedes-Benz and was being industrialised with a partner in China. This is context for Mercedes-Benz’s stated engine strategy, not independent proof for or against the reported BMW discussions.

What is—and is not—established
- Established: Autocar published an attributed report about possible BMW engine supply talks on 21 August 2025.
- Established: Mercedes-Benz CTO Markus Schäfer publicly denied the rumor in September 2025, as quoted by Car and Driver.
- Not established: That a deal was agreed, that BMW engines were selected for any Mercedes model, or that the models and production locations named in the report became plans.
- Not established by the later strategy update: Whether either company made a later direct statement specifically revisiting the reported talks. The update describes Mercedes-Benz’s engine range but does not directly address the rumor.
