Rivian reported 51,579 vehicle deliveries in 2024, up 2.9% from 50,122 in 2023. That is real, if modest, growth—not a surge. Production fell, and the company recorded a $1.200 billion gross loss and a $4.746 billion net loss for the year. A $170 million gross profit in the fourth quarter was an encouraging milestone, but it did not make Rivian profitable for 2024 as a whole.
How many vehicles did Rivian deliver in 2024?
Rivian reported delivering 51,579 vehicles in 2024, 1,457 more than in 2023. The company uses “deliveries” for vehicles handed to customers; it is the clearest reported measure for answering how many vehicles it sold. The company’s 2024 deliveries increased by about 2.9% year over year. Rivian’s 2026 Form 10-K reports the annual comparison.

Production and deliveries are different measures. Rivian produced 49,476 vehicles and delivered 51,579 in 2024; vehicles produced in one period do not necessarily get delivered in that same period. The gap alone does not establish the cause of the production decline or prove a change in demand. The Q4 report gives a closer look at the year’s finish: production was 12,727 and deliveries were 14,183. Rivian’s results release reported those quarterly figures.
Why did revenue rise while Rivian still lost money?
Revenue is the money a company records from its business; it is not the same as profit. Rivian’s 2024 total revenue rose to $4.970 billion from $4.434 billion in 2023, but the company still reported a $1.200 billion gross loss and a $4.746 billion net loss. Gross loss reflects costs associated with revenue exceeding that revenue; net loss is the broader bottom-line result after other expenses and items are included. Neither figure is a cash-flow measure.

Rivian’s 2026 Form 10-K breaks 2024 revenue into $4.161 billion from new electric vehicles, $333 million from regulatory credits, and $476 million from software and services. These sources contributed to revenue, but the annual gross loss shows that revenue growth had not yet covered the costs reflected in gross profit.
What made Rivian’s fourth quarter look promising?
Rivian reported $170 million of gross profit in Q4 2024: $110 million from automotive and $60 million from software and services. The company also described lower operating expenses year over year and automotive cost reductions per delivered vehicle. CEO RJ Scaringe said in the company’s February 20, 2025 results release: “This quarter we achieved positive gross profit and removed $31,000 in automotive cost of goods sold per vehicle delivered in Q4 2024 relative to Q4 2023.”

That was evidence of progress, not proof of lasting profitability. The same shareholder letter said automotive regulatory-credit sales increased by $260 million year over year in the quarter. The Q4 gross-profit result therefore needs to be read alongside the contribution from credits and software and services, as well as the full-year gross and net losses.
What held back Rivian’s 2024 performance?
Delivery growth was limited while production fell
Deliveries edged up by about 2.9%, but production declined from 57,232 vehicles in 2023 to 49,476 in 2024. That contrast makes “impressive” a qualified description: Rivian handed more vehicles to customers, but the increase was small and output was lower. The annual figures do not, by themselves, explain how much of the gap came from inventory timing or other operating factors.

A shared component constrained production
Rivian attributed a Q4 production impact to a shortage of a shared component in its Enduro motor system. Reuters reported in November 2024 that the shortage disrupted Q3 production and led the company to cut its annual production outlook. Rivian management said at the time that it did not expect the shortage to continue into 2025; that was a forward-looking expectation, not a guarantee. Reuters’ November report covered the disruption and outlook change.
Product mix and market conditions affected demand
Scaringe told Reuters that Rivian could not build all the products and the mix it had planned, which affected demand and revenue. Reuters also cited weak electric-vehicle demand and high borrowing costs as headwinds for expensive battery-electric vehicles. Those comments provide context, but they do not isolate one cause for Rivian’s annual delivery result. Reuters quoted Scaringe: “We weren’t able to build all the products and the mix of products that we planned and so that affected us on the demand side and on the revenue side.”

Cost reductions required manufacturing changes
Rivian’s efforts to improve unit economics included simplifying production and removing equipment and parts. Reuters reported in June 2024 that these changes reduced material costs in the company’s van line. Scaringe described the manufacturing logic this way: “The design of the parts and the design of the plant facilitate making the vehicle easier to build.” Lower costs can support better margins, but the need for such changes also shows why a single profitable quarter was not enough to establish durable profitability. Reuters’ June report described the production changes.

Rivian’s shareholder letter described its technology joint venture with Volkswagen Group as having a total deal size of up to $5.8 billion, including $3.5 billion of expected proceeds over several years. This is a multi-year arrangement subject to its terms—not $5.8 billion of 2024 vehicle revenue or cash received all at once. It is relevant to Rivian’s financing and technology plans, but should not be confused with the company’s reported operating results.

What happened after 2024?
Rivian’s 2025 Form 10-K later reported 42,247 deliveries in 2025, down 18% from 51,579 in 2024. Automotive revenue fell 15% to $3.830 billion, while automotive gross loss narrowed from $1.207 billion in 2024 to $432 million in 2025. The filing attributed the delivery decline in part to the expiration of federal 45W tax credits after September 30, 2025 and lower regulatory-credit sales, partly offset by higher average selling prices and a higher mix of R1 deliveries. This subsequent result shows that the slight increase in 2024 deliveries did not continue into 2025.
The same filing reported total liquidity of $6.588 billion at December 31, 2025, compared with $9.063 billion at December 31, 2024. Those are dated balance-sheet snapshots, not a measure of how long cash will last; the filing also discussed continuing capital needs and the possibility that future investments could require debt or equity financing. The 2025 figures add context to 2024 but should not be mistaken for 2026 operating results.
